Cancer expert says: don't wait for the science, panic now!
john5746 replied to bascule's topic in The Lounge
I think he just considers the risk of doing nothing outweighs the inconvenience of people using phones less. If he is wrong, his reputation is tarnished. If he is right, he potentially saves lives. -
Further proof that US Americans need maps....to better help the Iraq...or Iran...or something over there.

And how old was the last President to die in office?

I would say 9 + 1 = 10 is very important as well. Without the concept of using zero as a power of ten placeholder, the Indian numerals would be no better than roman

I liked the one from Loud agency. I guess birds look less cheesy to me.

Experiment: Richard Saunders in 3D (and 2D!)

You did a great job, I enjoyed it. It would have been better to have had a better contrast - dark paper with white cream, but of course it is easy to be a critic. It was entertaining, easy to understand and informative. -
Well, that depends on the "system" in place. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/sep/07/usa.gender I guess its better than running them through jails.

http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1824132,00.html?imw=Y Obvious that Gore will not be a VP candidate! He compared this goal to getting to the moon, but I think it makes the moon shot look like a walk in the park. I hope we finally start moving in this direction, but is this a realistic goal?

http://www.reuters.com/article/vcCandidateFeed7/idUSN1819664920080718 I see no good reason for McCain to tell everyone about this possible secret trip to Iraq. Comes off as being a smart ass and reckless IMO. Maybe the media would reveal it anyway, but I thought with his military background he would understand that it is a danger to all those in Iraq to expose something like that.

There are unpleasant side effects, but I take it to mean prior to getting the high or the effect they want.

I hope so, but I just get this feeling we are taking the pacifier out of one mouth and sticking it in another. Sometimes you need to let babies cry a little so they can figure out how to calm themselves down.

risk. risk to the environment. risk to a state due to tourism. risk to beach front property owners. Same reasons people want nuclear power, but not in their back yard

Yeah, the idea was to balance the load by leveraging all those batteries sitting there in the cars. I just threw the solar panels in there, but as panels are reduced in price, as would be accelerated if a major car company starts putting them on cars - well, then the payback period is reduced. Obviously, the main focus for the infrastructure would be reducing peak loads. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071203133532.htm

I've seen an idea somewhere about power sharing between cars. Plug your car in and you can either have it charged or sell your excess to the system, similar to solar houses. If you have cars with solar panels and most people with full batteries charged during the night, then that may provide some relief to the power consumption during the day. Of course, this would require numerous plug-in stations be built in parking lots everywhere.
-
Yes, I think innovations in solar technology will make that very possible. http://www.popsci.com/popsci/flat/bown/2007/green/item_59.html http://www.nanosolar.com/

but the demand would continue to increase, so I am not convinced that removing speculation would have much of an effect. Conservation seems to be the best thing people can do in the short term. Companies could encourage it by moving to 4 day work weeks, more telecommuting, etc. That would be one short term remedy that isn't a gimmick, IMO

That's being very PC. I would love to see him tell a cop that his radar gun could not have taken a measurement, because time doesn't stop. He would get an attitude adjustment real quick.
-
Actually, one cat would probably make a pretty good splatter pattern. Seriously, is there evidence to suggest that QM duality occurs with larger objects or can we get that precise with measurements?

1) physics has much harder math. 2) We might think a virtual world is more important, but our physical bodies require energy from the real world - as does our virtual world. That is why science > mythology.

I didn't say that. Picture a 30 mile crappy dirt road going from A to B and also a nice highway bypass that is 90 miles in length between the two. cmon, where's the love? can't we all get a little partial credit? I would suck as a teacher!

Is delusion necessary for successful survival?
john5746 replied to dichotomy's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
LOL, thin line between persistence and stalking Yes, thank god for lust, or was that the apple? -
I think everyone is correct in their own way. It does not state in the problem that the total trip time must be one hour and that the trip back must be 30 miles. If you assume the trip back must be 30 miles, then you have run out of time(or miles). If you can take a scenic route as YT suggests, then traveling 90 miles back to A will give the 90mph answer ecoli provided.

You are defining delusion as over confidence and then you throw in "to some degree". IMO, any group can benefit from some members that dream big and are over confident - to some degree. Its a matter of risk/reward.
