I disagree, since a certain % of the economy or any human endeavor for that matter involves emotion. The President can't do that much to affect the economic cycle anyway, so being somewhat positive is better than being pessimistic.
-
I don't think it would be constructive for Bush to say what he really thinks. I mean if he says "Yeah, we are screwed - assets are devalued, inflation, energy crisis looms, Iraq/Turkey/Iran is a mess. Man, I'm glad I am rich and will retire soon. Sucks to be you." That doesn't inspire much hope.

The veteran should be given a lead position over the newbie, if not then ask for it. If not given a lead position, I would only show the newbie basic ropes, especially safety. Screw the company.

Yes, the US is headed to a recession and the loss of value in assets coupled with inflation is going to be one heck of a whammy. Having a new President might bring some short term relief.

Obama is going to show that it does work in Iraq.

As for me, I hope to become...comfortably numb.

Every child of our own in the world is a gift we embrace. That's how 99% of the people operate anyway. We will give our wealth, our lives, even other's lives for our children. But other children? That is their parent's responsibility. So, make the women have the child, then forget about them. Having a child was a great thing for me in my white bread world, so it must be a great thing for everyone else as well.

STUPID religious types might be better. Poor Old Me, Poor Old Me, Talk about religion, I'll kick you in the knee. Poor Old Me, Poor Old Me, Science and reason? Well that sounds like treason! Poor Old Me, Poor Old Me, You mention God? Be careful where you trod. Poor Old Me, Poor Old Me, I feel like a victim, There's no need to listen. Poor Old Me, Poor Old Me, Science and religion, they cannot mix, Don't you understand? I don't want a fix! Goooooooooooooooo GOD! Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaay! < POM POM's flying all about >

What is the point of you? Why does their need to be a you?

Who is "our"? It is my belief that some religious people try to use science to help them delude themselves about the existence of a god. If someone makes claims that fly in the face of science, they probably will get scientific arguments against those beliefs. If someone tries to make political arguments based on their religion, they will probably get a political argument against their position. Religion used to encompass everything - science, agriculture, government, entertainment, war. I guess you could say that these things are being "hijacked", but I say they are being released from bondage. And I say, thank god for that freedom!

Your premise would be that you would actually beat just holding on to an index fund of the S & P 500, which I doubt that you would. Even assuming free trading, buying and selling at first impulse would be about the worst thing you can do. Math beats complete ignorance, but it won't beat knowledge of the fundamentals and luck, IMO.

My first post - a musing about QM, before I was endowed with the complete mastery of the subject. http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?p=69185#post69185 My first thread, unfortunately it is still news worthy http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5225

As Bill Maher observed, the republicans don't like any of the candidates. They want a myth - their idea of Reagan. He increased taxes, pulled out of Beirut and granted amnesty to immigrants. They wouldn't want a real Reagan either. They deserve to lost, but it will irritate me to no end that they will try to put the blame on McCain. Bush, the republican congress and the voter split is the problem.

I think he tried to get Huckaby to end his campaign. When he didn't, Romney knew there was no chance for him. Ambition is job one for these guys.

Well, she dances around the word mistake, but she at least would change her vote in retrospect, McCain won't even do that. This is the issue that will probably keep me from voting for McCain. If Iraq is not in decent shape come election time, I can't vote for McCain. McCain will be more stubborn than Bush in regards to the war effort. He wasn't playing politics in support for the surge, he thinks the military must win. I really respect McCain and wanted him as Pres in 2000. He has served his country for many years and has earned respect. Contrast that with Obama who does some nice speeches and gets all this emo support. Voting for Obama is a roll of the dice, but he is getting support from some very qualified people, so maybe he will be successful. At the very least, it will be interesting to see how long the media love fest lasts for an African American president.

I don't think the Broken Window Fallacy is trying to address the theory at all, but if it is then I agree with your assertion and it wasn't my intention at all.
-
Broken windows apparently make good analogies. Broken Window Fallacy The broken window fallacy is dealing with the opportunity lost due to the broken window. Whereas the broken window theory is dealing with the social consequences of not replacing the broken window. The broken window fallacy assumes that the broken window will be replaced.

That is a little dreamy, IMO. Not everyone can become a doctor. Certainly, if you have the potential and you put forth effort and be nice to some influential people, many things are possible. Always have a plan B in the back of your mind. If you can't make it into a Med school, maybe nursing or something else will work. Life should not be looked upon as a sport. If you do your best and fail, you are not just a loser. You just need to find another path that might not look as pretty, but might be the best one after all. Keep in mind I am not saying to not try or that you cannot make it. Just that not everyone can be what they dream to be and that it is not a travesty to find something else.

Never heard of it, sorry. I read a little bit about it, very interesting.

A good slogan for those in Florida and Michigan: The donkey ate my ballot.

This is a myth, IMO instigated by America coming out of the depression during WWII. War is a real cost, but more importantly, it is an opportunity cost. I think its the broken window fallacy which explains it best. In short, at least some of the money spent in the war would have been invested in something to increase the GDP. Halliburton, its shareholders and its employees may benefit, but the consumer loses the goods or services that money may have otherwise provided. Assuming they would have pissed it away on something even less useful is incorrect, IMO. The advantages to the war is keeping middle east stability(oil) and avoiding terrorist attacks. It can be argued either way that the Iraq war is helping or hurting in these areas.
