    Yay, GUNS!

But we can easily do without motorcycles and swimming pools if it’s for the greater good, they aren’t actually needed to live your life; what I can’t understand is why otherwise intelligent people seem to think a gun is NEEDED to live, rather than, all too often. the antipode.
  2. That wasn’t the intent just that the moon’s stabilising effect is the reason for the seasons we have. But without a moon wouldn’t the Earth's wobble make the seasons chaotic in this scenario?

    Yay, GUNS!

Those of us that appreciate the quality and value of INow’s post also realise the facts and reason will fall on deaf ears, because, for some reason living in a democratic/republic country is one step away from a dictatorship and see a gun as some sort of protection. The very definition of childish thinking is saying my dad is bigger than yours, so leave me alone, and is as naive as saying my gun is bigger than yours, so I’m safe.
  4. Just because some thing’s look similar, it doesn’t mean they are.
  5. If the question is, ‘how do we land a robot on mars?’ then the answer is far from simple. You, yet again, seem to misunderstand the difference between knowledge and understanding.
  6. You seem to be labouring under the illusion of understanding, not that of intelligence. The internet is an excellent source of information, it’s also an excellent source of misinformation, the trick is to understand which is which. This shouldn’t get in the way of true/honest introspection; in fact it can enhance it, understanding yourself is to understand others and vice versa.
  7. Since you haven’t seen god, it’s your own idea of what he/she maybe that inspires you and given that, anything you come to understand about god also comes from you, leaving god not only unnecessary but a hindrance to your self awareness.
  8. Fruit contains a lot of calories, grass does not, and a large body needs calories or a large enough biomass. There are four ways to gather fruit: 1/ Climb the fruit bearing tree. 2/ Gather the fallen fruit. 3/ If you’re big enough, bend the fruit bearing branches to your level. 4/ shake the fruit off the tree.
  9. So not a lot of liberal thinking, my link suggests liberals are often wrong but not, I think, when it comes to fear.
  10. This is the first sentence.
  11. I think England was close to balance when we started the NHS just like I think America was when it abolished slavery. Today I would suggest England and America is subject to extreme conservatism. Balance doesn’t always mean an even split, sometimes one side weighs heavier than the other.
  12. Your link suggests it wasn't vegetation that diminished but their favourite fruit. You seem to have answered your own question.
  13. The world is a better place when liberal and conservative (rich and poor) thinking/practice is in balance; unfortunately the pendulum continues to swing between one extreme and the other, with an occasional/brief period of relative balance. The problem is every country has its own pendulum and is out of sequence with every other country, maybe one day the world will synchronise, we can but hope.
  14. There’s no meaning of life or, said another way, there’s no reason for life, it just is. My life has purpose, family, friends, work and play all help to give my life meaning even if the reason for my life is meaningless. Like my moral code is derived from the bible (do unto others...) yet there is no god, the bible has some meaning even if the conclusion doesn't.
  15. There is no meaning of life, there probably is no god (not that I care either way); yet I have given my life meaning and have a specific moral code.
  16. Indeed but as mentioned by others there are way more than just five; the origin of five senses was first suggested in the early middle ages. We’ve moved on since then and this is a science forum, so it’s required to point out such mistakes whatever the intention of the OP. The senses are innately subjective, for instance, a professional surfer may struggle on a pushbike or changing direction whilst sprinting, all require balance but which is better? As an aside, I'm with Phi: This deserves it's own topic.
  17. Presumably the light can’t be stopped using this method, which would suggest there is a lower limit.
  18. How does one visualise the sense of balance or hunger?
  19. That’s like saying whatever speed I’m doing is my speed, which is, of course, true but it doesn’t answer the question.
  20. Perhaps a little of topic but what is the theoretical slowest speed of light?
  21. Or just because.
  22. Indeed but the question was why; perhaps you have a better explanation?
  23. Much like we can't reason with someone who doesn't understand what a conspiracy theory is.
  24. You have merely seen different atmospheric conditions; unless you’re ignorant of the science that disproves this particular conspiracy theory and blindly show you’re misunderstanding of the term “cognitive dissonance”.
