Bilateral Symmetry: Why are some organs singular?
Acme replied to Sorcerer's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Arguably we do have two brains. The bilateral physiological symmetry of some parts is obvious and there is good evidence that each cerebral hemisphere performs different functions to some degree. Symmetry and asymmetry in the human brain -

That's pretty much circular though. I was hoping you had something more concrete. No worries; as I cited above, the biological clock mechanism remains unknown even by the experts. Time will tell?

It's none of our buzzness. But seriously, since all bee workers are female why not use female agents? Ladies' perfume on Numero Uno? Or maybe if we get a female president the male agents will be more attentive. Then of course I don't recall any reports of agents actually leaving their posts while actively protecting the president, rather their shenanigans were off-duty affairs.

To Buddha that would be wisdom. Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue. ~Buddha

Update: The Sun has set and the solution has reached the saturation point with some nice cubic crystals formed on the bottom of the jar. The crystals on the surface formed on some dust and no-see-ums that have fallen in. Photo below. ☼check Tuesday August 4 8:15pm 129.25 hr : salt down 4.2 cm / plain down 4.5 cm Relative humidity 45%, temperature 71º, barometric pressure 29.64 inches of mercury

How Many Holes are Drilled/Mile for Anchoring on Highways?
Acme replied to ArgoMix's topic in Engineering
Reflectors that are on the road surface are just glued on; no hole drilling. Light posts may have a large hole drilled or dug to receive the concrete and the spacing may vary. Drive by some and measure how far apart they are using your odometer. Rebar is neither drilled for nor epoxied. It is wired together, surrounded by forms, and the concrete poured over it. Threaded rods for signs/lights/signals are often cast in place similar to the rebar. I suppose later additions may be drilled into existing concrete and epoxied but I'm not sure. I don't know what you mean by 'various screen tubing'. ?? What's this all about anyway? School project? Work related? Selling epoxy? Idle curiosity? -
The great Seas and Rivers of the Supercontinents.
Acme replied to Mike Smith Cosmos's topic in Earth Science
Daring little doggy! Do not go dog, do not go. Could have been flooding as they do appear to have some rounding on the edges. Might also be a landslide. The sand could be blown in or beach sand. I think a detailed analysis is required to properly qualify the whole assemblage. You might check with the local university as such a study may be extant. Note: Layers of sediment do not always represent a continuous sequence because there may be intermediate periods of erosion. -
Report on 2 measurements today. No photo of the current salt rind, but very little remained this morning and now it is larger than any time previous. [Will get photo ASAP] During the interval of today's measures, when the Sun was out, the rate of evaporation was higher for the salted water than for the pure water, i.e. the salted water level dropped 3mm and the pure water level dropped 2mm. ☼check Tuesday August 4 11:40am 121 hr/~5d : salt down 3.7 cm / plain down 4.0 cm Relative humidity 52%, temperature 69º, barometric pressure 29.70 inches of mercury ☼check Tuesday August 4 4:00pm 125 hr : salt down 4.0 cm / plain down 4.2 cm Relative humidity 40%, temperature 82º, barometric pressure 29.62 inches of mercury Here's the photo. The jars are still in full sun, but I positioned myself to shade this jar for a decent exposure by the camera.

Speaking of foot notes, this is one. When I responded in post #2 I was more-or-less being facetious as I expected the thread to go nowhere. As it has turned out the thread got legs and in hindsight I regret posting the picture in my reply. I traced the picture in the OP to a high school website and found the image I posted next to it. In retrospect it may be a copyright violation and it surely seems now at the least disrespectful of the girls pictured. My window to edit has passed but I have asked that it be removed. Whether or not my request is honored, mea culpa, or in the vulgar vernacular of the youth, my bad.

Why aren't electric cars more efficient in charging?
Acme replied to Elite Engineer's topic in Engineering
Ah. That explains a lot. Anyway, since electric cars don't directly pollute, i.e. no exhaust, then they are not harming the environment as do cars with internal combustion engines. One could then argue that the coal-fired generating station is polluting to make the power to charge the car to drive on the road that Jack built, but one can't sort out sources once power is on the grid so that's weak because wind, solar, and hydro power also go onto the grid. Across the river from me in Portland Oregon there are free charging stations, though you still pay to park just like any car; so much for too expensive. The charging infrastructure varies widely across the US so consult your local info resource. As for charging at home you can easily make the calculation using your exact power cost per/kwhr and the exact battery capacity of your specific electric car and then compare that cost and the range you get with the cost to fuel a conventional car for the same range. Why aren't electric cars more efficient in charging?
Acme replied to Elite Engineer's topic in Engineering
'Long distance' is such a relative measure. If the car gets a person where they want to go in the time they want to get there on a charge then no worries. Do you have a reference on the expensive charging? You have just described the perpetual motion setup widely touted by cranks. On the other hand there is regenerative braking wherin putting on the brakes does drive a generator and charge the battery. No harm, no foul. -
You're welcome Phi. And what is 'lollies' but a euphemism for panties, right? Give us a break. Apparently some of the loolies have little paw prints on the bum if the team has a pawed mascot. And more's the hypocrisy that -as I read while researching today- some high schools won't allow cheerleaders to wear their outfits in class on account of it's lewd. Huh‽ I have to ask again, what about those wrestlers and nothing under the singlet? Nothing left to the imagination there boy. Not sure how that rolls in high school but in college it appears to be up to the wrestler. Whole websites devoted to photos from these matches, and I'll spare you the proof. I have no objections to any of the attire; whatever floats the boat. I suspect if the girls & boys thought they were being exploited by their costumes that they would initiate a protest cheer. What I don't much care for is the 'adult' hypocrisy but all indications are that humanity was, is, and will remain hung (can I say that?) up on nudity whether near or full. Now I'm off to do some more research on the web and get to the bottom of all this.

Report on 2 measurements today and a photo of the current salt rind on the jar. The rind was absent this morning when I took the first measurement. During the interval of today's measures, when the Sun was out, the rate of evaporation was equal, i.e. both levels dropped 3mm. ☼check Monday August 3 10:45am 96 hrs/4d: salt down 3.3 cm / plain down 3.5 cm Relative humidity 51%, temperature 67º, barometric pressure 29.65 inches of mercury ☼check Monday August 3 4:00pm 101.25 hrs : salt down 3.6 cm / plain down 3.8 cm Relative humidity 42%, temperature 82º, barometric pressure 29.58 inches of mercury

Good wondering. Apparently cheerleading started at colleges in the late 1700s and it was a male activity. The Wiki article is rather lengthy so I'll just quote a couple passages and show one titillating female picture from the 40s. There is not a single mention in the article of the costumage. Rah rah sis boom bah!! Cheerleading @ Wiki Addendum Good ol' Wiki has an entire article on cheerleading uniforms. Seems the righteous have been aghast at shortening skirts since the 70s. And those garments we peep under the skirts are called 'spankies', 'lollies', or 'bundies' and the real underwear is yet another layer down. Why there is even an organization to lay out rules for attire, though as pointed out by Phi the concern is more focused on above the waistage. And where is the righteous indignation over wrestlers wearing nothing under their singlets‽ Cheerleading uniforms @ wiki

Which path would be the best approach to depression as a game idea?
Acme replied to Unity+'s topic in The Lounge
Given the all-too-frequent suicide of folks with depression -teen or not- it seems a rather macabre theme for a game.
