  1. I live in Washington state and the last time a mountain lion/cougar/puma killed a person was 80 years ago. (Not sure about black bear fatalities here but I presume it's been a long time too.) Because cougars and black bear will attack people if given the chance, I never go into the forest unarmed but I do not and would not hunt cougars for sport. I would only hunt bear if pressed for food. Fatal attacks by these animals are rare. List of fatal bear attacks in N. America List of fatal cougar attacks in N. America
  2. We have spots on the coast not too far from me that exhibit the behavior; called blow-holes.
  3. I expect it would take an hour at least to record a ship getting to the horizon and a bit more to disappear beyond/below it. IIRC one can see approx. 17 miles, i.e. from ground level it is ~17 miles to the horizon. I don't think many folks see the need to make such a video so I'm not surprised it's hard to find them.
  4. The video was time compressed in order to...well... save time. I checked the original at YouTube and there is no further info given on the ship's speed.
  5. I don't know how one would infer the condition of jet streams so far back as you mention, however this article describes using rainfall patterns to model jet streams back 4000 years. Frigid Winter? Blame 4,000 Years of Wild Jet Streams
  6. String Junky posted a video showing a ship disappear over the horizon in post #12
  7. On my machine, holding Alt and typing 227 on the numeric keypad gives the pi symbol. π Here's a reference to many more symbols using the technique: Alt Code symbols on Laptop keyboard Go to their Home page for other systems.
  8. As the water enters underground cavities such as storm-water drains or other utility passages the air is compressed and causes geysers to erupt through small openings such as holes in man-hole covers or vent stacks. These geysers would be brief as the air would be expelled in short order as the water filled the cavities.
  9. One needn't be elevated to witness evidence of Earth's curvature; a superior mirage suffices. I couldn't find a good photo but it wouldn't matter for douchebags such as Sunshaker's 'friend' anyway. Just thought I'd offer an alternative to what has already been posted. Superior mirage
  10. Possibly blue field entoptic phenomenon or phosphenes. Try recording the scene with a camera sensitive to infrared. (Many Sony HandiCams have this feature.) If you see the effect but the camera doesn't then it's probably a physiological effect and not physical.

  12. Locate your cloud home over an ocean and be done with all the airspace squabbling. What you want is more of a dirigible than a blimp and I would use hydrogen and not helium. Flammability issues can be dealt with and you can make your own hydrogen using photovoltaics and seawater. Hydrogen gives a little more lift than helium and the supply of helium is limited, regulated, and expensive. Better arm the crap out of it too as you can be sure you will be a constant target for one reason or another. Good luck!
  13. Lots of freeware for it out there. converting WEBP file @ Yahoo search

  15. I'm skeptical of that claim. Reference please.
  16. This article @ LiveScience concludes that it is most likely an artifact of marketing. Why Is Pink for Girls and Blue for Boys?
  17. Yes; millions of lives vs. hundreds of thousands of lives is a rather simple balance. The war is over and I have no interest in arguing over blame. The Japanes Prime Minister appears to agree. Get over it. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Addresses Joint Meeting of Congress
  18. The Japanese attacked the US, so the US went to war with them. Had the US not used the nuclear bombs they would have still continued the assault on the Japanese mainland and the resulting death toll would likely have been in the millions. War is as war does and no nationality is exempt.
  19. So naiveté is remediable. Interestingly, my online dictionary of choice gives both spellings of naïve with the acute accented e [é]; naïveté & naiveté. However in their entry for naïve they do not give naiveté as a noun form, but they do give naiveness. On top of that, my spell checker marked naiveness as incorrect but not naiveté and it auto corrects naive to naïve. Sacré bleu! naiveté @ The Free Dictionary naive @ The Free Dictionary
  20. USGS is showing it as a 3.7 at a depth of 10km. USGS Earthquake Hazards Program All quakes occur at faults but not all faults are on or associated with tectonic plate boundaries. Strain can build for a long time and some faults are not even known until they fail and cause a quake. The interactions are complex and other than saying a fault failure caused the quake there is generally no chain-of-events mechanism/data to explain a specific quake. This may be particularly true for this quake as I suspect the area has few seismometers. Addendum: I found the British equivalent of the USGS site and they have more details and give the magnitude as 4.2 and a depth of 13km. Ramsgate Quake Since you felt it Dr. P, notice they have a link where you can report your experience. By all means do this as it helps geologists qualify the quake and its effects. >> Did you feel it? Home page:British Geological Survey: Earthquake Seismology

  22. Near the end of the movie there is a link to another movie along the same course but after the quake. Equally amazing.
  23. Just reporting what I read at the time. Here's something on Shoemaker Levy 9 breakup written before impact that leaves the question open. Keep in mind how fragile comets are and that they tend to be irregularly shaped. The Comet About to Smash into Jupiter
