I question that most of Earth's salt is in the oceans. I can't find an estimate for salt in/on land as with such numbers available for oceans, so I won't cite what I don't have. Nonetheless, there is a salt cycle in the oceans just like a hydrologic cycle. Salt settles to the bottom and becomes part of the sediments while new salt is added by the rivers & aerosols born by wind which are taking salt from mineral deposits on land.* So too, salt spray along coast lines deposit salt(s) back on land. This is part of why ocean salinity remains relatively constant. * Ocean Chemical Processes . The foregoing on the salt cycle notwithstanding, I found a source that supports John's assertion that the oceans hold most of the world's salt. My doubt is settled. Great Caesar's ghost that's a salty lot! Say '36 trillion tonnes'. Unimaginable is just what I was going...erhm...did say. Compare that to what is estimated in land deposits: Source: >>Global salt deposits When life hands you lemons - break out the tequila and salt. ~ Unattested

Who is looking out for the EARTH as a whole
Acme replied to Mike Smith Cosmos's topic in Earth Science
Proper behavior is not getting out of your vehicle and/or feeding the bears. Hardly Orwellian or ominous, it is actually simple good advice that protects the bears and the people. Nonsense. The rusted/oxidized remnants of our machinery is the ore of future humans. While coke from coal is more efficient for smelting iron, charcoal from wood works fine. More nonsense. The minerals, elements, and materials made from them remain and can be reused at any time. The elapsed time before the repurposing/reprocessing only dictates the means & methods of the reuse. Waste not, want not. Yes we can -and I think should- go out and explore, but there's no doing that if we kill ourselves (and the bears) before we get the chance. -
I have a 2 stroke engine, what can i do with it?

For this application I recommend removal of the muffler. -
Cool stuff. I just read about it in Swansont's blog entry. I want an automobile covered wit it.

Maybe this product? You may have to break up the log as they say don't use with pellet stove. I can't find any mention of what the ingredients are, but if you/we can find the ingredients then maybe you can make your own. Creasote Sweeping Log Edit: This page calls into question the effectiveness of the chimney sweeping logs: >>Do Those Chimney Sweeping Logs Really Work?

I would say that in your proposed case it is implied that infinity is a number, and that infinity is not a number so you would not be justified in your conclusion.

Acme replied to Elite Engineer's topic in Engineering
No; I mean get a working alternator at the junk yard. One that is not in use in any car that you then connect to your motor with belt & pulleys. You will also want the voltage regulator from a car and a 12V battery. Now when you have no other power, whether out in the wilds or power goes out at home as Enthalpy mentioned, you will have a generator & storage system run by your motor. Add an inverter and you can power 120AC devices from the battery. -

Hook it to an automobile alternator to charge a battery for emergency use. -

Is there an Earths Magnetic Field Flip imminent.
Acme replied to Mike Smith Cosmos's topic in Earth Science
You're welcome. If you will bother to read the other threads I referred you to, you will see that the danger is minimal and over-hyped by no end of publications and individuals. -
science is about predicting physical behavior?
Acme replied to Iwonderaboutthings's topic in Physics
Seems to me that no matter what anyone says you will argue. Math is a science; physics is a science that uses math. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some old thread here that is dozens if not hundreds of posts long arguing the semantic issue, but that doesn't change anything about how math is used, how physics is done, or about how science is done. It all depends on the specifics. You could only generalize that science is a tool that can predict physical behavior given a suitable set of data and circumstances. (Circumstances such as computing power for example.) -
Huh? Are you asking this thread be moved from Speculation? Anyway, the article you started a new thread with today, I cite in post #32 here. PS We also have this recent thread which is more-or-less on the same topic. Protection by the magnetic field It would be a good idea to read that & this thread in their entirety before posting so as not to rehash material already covered. As I just said, I already cited that article in post #32. Please take off the large font formatting.

Someone made the no-crossover argument here recently in another thread. At least you qualified your statements with 'generally' and 'not terribly common'. Still, it happens and so it's not to be discounted even on an alien world. My answer to the argument in the other thread was Rabies. In that case it would be exactly like a dog giving a human Rabies in short order with a good bite.

Please don't use that large font; it's distracting. We have a current thread on the topic so there's no need to start another. >> Magnetic field decrease of the Earth! -
My pleasure. I'm not sure we can make such an assumption. Particularly in regards to extraterrestrial microbes. Well, some phagocytes don't differentiate as to whether an intruder is a disease causing agent or simply foreign material. Then too, it is often a matter of numbers that determines if an intruder is successful or not. That is to say the intruder replicates faster than phagocytes can destroy them.

[math]\dfrac{(2m+3)(m+4)+(9m-9)(m+4)-(16m+24)(m-1)}{(m-1)(2m+3)(m+4)}[/math] Be sure to watch the signs as ajb pointed out. In the above, (2m+3)(m+4) is correct. For (9)(m-1)(m+4) I suggest doing the (m-1)(m+4) first and then multiply through by 9. Same for the (-8)(2m+3)(m-1). Do the (2m+3)(m-1) first and then multiply through by the -8. You laid it out right in the first post with this: [math]\frac{(2m+3)(m+4)+9(m-1)(m+4)-8(2m+3)(m-1)}{(m-1)(2m+3)(m+4)}[/math]

+one Recall that strips with more than a 1/2 twist are termed 'paradromic rings'. Further recall that any paradromic ring with an odd number of 1/2 twists shares the property of Möbius strips in having 1 surface and 1 boundary. Further further recall that each addition of a hole adds another boundary. No; the numerator is still incorrect. It should have two terms in the variable m and no constant. The denominator is correct.

No; antibodies aren't necessary for the immune system to destroy 'intruders'. I'm no expert and it's rather a complex family of defenders, but you might get started by reading up on phagocytes. Wiki is as good a starting place as any, but if you don't like that then just do a web search for 'phagocyte' and pick your poison. Phagocyte @ Wiki

Yes well, I have discussed with you why foundational things may be responsible for phenomena and yet irrelevant to them. Standing waves are well defined and unless you can describe an exact mechanism by which they manifest in the brain then invoking them is meaningless.

When the movie comes out on disk I may watch it. Nevertheless, the Noah story was lifted from the Epic of Gilgamesh so it's not rooted in Abrahamic religions.

The Blueberries finished in the dehydrator and they came out tasty but variable. Some are crunchy and some chewy. Not sure if it's a difference in size, moisture content, sugar, or what. No matter. Next into dehydrator today is Dill. No seeds yet so it will be leaves and flowers. The first Roma Tomato has ripened and the first Sunflower has gone to seed. I've grown Sunflowers before but never had any so tall as this year. I have several 10 footers! :-0 Will let pictures do the rest of the talking. Dill Tomato Roma Sunflowers Squash Yellow
