Well I assume that he has fixed the geometry to be the standard one induced by the imbedding in 3 d Euclidean space. All the standard stuff from high school applies. The only thing that could conceivable be different is if he is talking about the topological 2-sphere, but there we don't necessarily have any notion of length. I figured you would know some caveat. You da man.

No; a theory is founded in observations and meant to explain what was observed. As I said, a theory doesn't have to 'cope' with observations, it is meant to explain them. The fundamental phenomenon of nature is change; resistance is futile and you will be assimilated.

What are the stages of life of a star of spectral class O?
Acme replied to PhantomAvocado's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
The explanations are too lengthy to summarize, let alone to copy & paste into a post. Try this: >> The Life Cycles of Stars: How Supernovae Are Formed @NASA -
Earth's magnetic field has reversed many times, and yet here we are. When it does reverse it does so in bits and stages but study suggests it does not simply disappear. Humans' biggest concern from the Sun is that large CME's (Coronal Mass Ejections) can disrupt satellites and induce electrical currents in our power grids which can overload and burn out the circuits. These CME's can occur at any Sun cycle and the Earth's magnetic field at any strength it exhibits is no shield against them. New investigation shows that the Sun's magnetic field regularly link with Earth's to open 'portals' that allow the solar wind into the atmosphere where it otherwise would be redirected. >> Hidden Portals in Earth's Magnetic Field While not particularly germane to your question but interesting nonetheless, the Sun's magnetic field reverses every 11 years in step with the sunspot cycle. >> Suns magnetic field about to flip PS Here's a page that has explanatory articles and current satellite data and news stories on the Sun's activity. >> spaceweather.com

Infinity, eternity, perpetual motion, and time travel
Acme replied to serloco's topic in Speculations
You are mistaken; numerology is bunk no matter what you take into consideration or what word you call it by. -
Obviously you have the only correct view so I bow to your brilliance. How stupid and impudent of me to have questioned it. I'll just return to the ill begotten hole I climbed out of and self-flagellate for my transgressions.

Notwithstanding that symbols can be made into any arrangement, numerology is bunk. ... -
The body's electricity in operation?
Acme replied to Hazel M's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
The electricity moving the cup is static electricity*, but the electricity moving the train is current electricity. The static charge on your body does not add to the battery or the train. * -
I understand that your definition of mass is unsupported and contrary to the standard definition of matter. By extension I expect your application of that definition to intuition is unfounded.

We have all made an honest inquiry into your work & I am not swayed by your appeal to authority. I read the first page and it is nothing but complaints against the establishment, i.e. a Galileo gambit. Why? Because the establishment doesn't accept the author's work. Jim Berkland comes to mind in this regard. As he did and as the zombie guys have done, you should do. Get a blog and take your show on the road ala the going rogue gambit. Good luck.

The body's electricity in operation?
Acme replied to Hazel M's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
Hard to tell from the description. The batteries powered the track, but were not in the train, correct? Did you touch just one side of the track, or was your finger across both tracks at the same time? Did you move your finger because the train hit it? If you put your finger on the track behind the train did it run? I have had model trains where the track was powered and delivered electricity to the motor in the engine. They are quite finicky because corrosion develops quickly on both track and wheels and the corrosion inhibits a good electrical contact. Because the weight of the train is what makes the contact good, it may be that your putting your finger on the track in front of the train depressed the track at your finger and consequently pushed it up where it contacted the train wheels and so made an otherwise bad contact good. -
Reading the first page of Arc's last proffered link, I see those authors taking the same tack. (Get it? Horses, race, tack? ) As I and other respondents are not quite ignorant of geology, the gambit sticks out like a batholith. *Galileo gambit @ Wikipedia So if experts are unwilling and/or incapable and we forum idiots are incapable but not unwilling to understand the idea, what does that leave?

Because the scientist was not thinking about her problem, I would call the thought an epiphany and not intuition. I don't think that you give an accurate accounting/application of Gödel's theorem(s). I have read some of your thread and its replies and I don't see anything there to apply to this topic.

I did consult it, and in fact quoted from it here. You may have missed it as the forum software joins multiple posts made within a short time period into one post. It is the physical part not being relevant to consciousness even though the physical part is responsible that is at the heart of Hofstadter's argument. He goes to great length to give examples of why this is the way things actually happen. I again encourage you to read the whole book. I cannot quote more than snippets in accordance with forum & copyright rules as well as out of respect to Doug. Read the whole book as it is one argument; it is self-similar to its thesis. Hard as some parts may be, you just gotta suck it up and power through. I went back to my re-reading and found some self-satisfaction at how a modicom of Doug's words & ideas have stuck in my careenium since my first read several years back. The following is a slight redaction illustrating that point and on the topic of this thread --more-or-less.

You need to read it all and not rely on comments & critics. His underlying interest is AI and mathematics and while the philosophical aspect comes into play of necessity -and style- Dougie's math and logic puts you between the hammer and the anvil. People of small souls should not attempt it. I'll have a look at the reference. . Chance is inherent in our sensorial experience, but our intelligence is about what we do with and make of those experiences. This is the strange loop Doug explicates as a hierarchy of recursion in which the paradox is that while it is founded on low order occurrences such as atoms & such, it is not controlled by them. I'm paraphrasing there and will check for exact wording later; I'm actually re-reading the book these last few weeks and this is a good test of my recall and grokkage. I did well enough me thinks.

Catchy title never hurts. Roger. Checked and said Estes was black powder. I never cared for the stuff in my persussion-cap pistol and used Pyrodex instead. (Until their factory blew up anyway. ) Yep; pretty safe as long as you observe the rules & regulations. Seems the biggest concern these days is setting fires. Good info. Sounds like a blast.

Roger. Just asked as you used the terms 'rocket science' and 'rocket propellant'. I didn't know Estes engines were black powder, so thanks for that info. Roger. Appreciate your adding disclaimer to OP. Not that I had any intentions of trying this at home, or out at the mine on my own. Nice to know about the stuff though. Should the need arise to seek out professionals I have some idea what to ask for. Did that lessen the effectiveness of the shot? Was it one of the stemming plugs shown in the last video?

Saw something hard to explain in the sky... What could it have been?

So the propellant is similar to what we find in Estes model rocket engines? I noticed in one of the concrete barrel tests that the igniter was ejected out the top; was this a failure of the seal?

Looks cool. But hey, who doesn't like watching things blow up in slo-mo? What are the benefits over conventional explosives? Cheaper? Safer? Smaller drill holes? Lighter weight? Other?

The exact processes are still unknown as I earlier noted. This is where rats make sense because to find out what is going on chemically in learning it is often necessary to chop open the brain, put it in a blender, and then make a chemical analysis. Newer brain imaging technologies show some promise for non-invasive study of humans and other animals, but it does take time for researchers to propose, design, and carry out such studies. If you want some insight into the philosophical and/or organizational aspect of self-awareness and thinking, I recommend reading Doug Hofstadter's I Am A Strange Loop.

Surely their rapid reproduction has been overwhelmed by the power of human Science. Modern scientific products - soap, toothpaste, and disinfectant, daily defeat the ancient bacterial hordes. And the same defeat has been inflicted on old insect pests such as bedbugs, fleas and lice. For example, has any poster here, still got lice on their body? Actually all our germ killing products have promoted the evolution of bugs resistant to them. CDC sets threat levels for drug-resistant 'superbugs' Fleas, lice, and bedbugs are doing just fine thank you. Bed Bugs on the Rise
