You're welcome. Nice one. Where house? Whorehouse. Hoar house! Gray house? I went searching for some precision-in-writing nuggets & found the following. Can we say proofread...again? Precision in Writing Is That Word Necessary? My cold eye cast it gaze askew. In fairness, the article does bring up some good points on repeated redundancies. That's what got Ophiolite started here, so the subject isn't very unique.

Is there evidence of " Cleverness " in Nature and it's processes ?

You're welcome. Edit: I do appreciate the bonds of friendship and we have a saying from a public service announcement here in the US that I think is an apropos metaphor for this situation. Friends don't let friends drive drunk. -

What raises my hackles is your continuing to ignore and/or argue over basic definitions and sound logical reasoning that contradict your assertions. Your claims that you are applying science in this discussion are a farce. I'll kindly shower my reputation votes by the dictates of my conscience. -

I gave you one of those minus points Mike and it is well within my purview. The anonymity is part of the board setup and if you have a complaint then take it up with the staff in the appropriate place. As to the Speculation section it has been pointed out numerous times by staff that it is no shield from the requirement of solid reasoning. My appeal to the staff is to cut to the chase and close this thread. -

I think you meant 'covalent' if you have time still to edit. Not that math holds any sway with Mike or TAR, but it is the math that is a clever human endeavor. Whether these fellas fail to understand or simply choose to ignore that cleverness in its very definition requires sentience, it should be clear by now that they have no intention of stopping the obtuseness. More to your point physica, there is no looking at or understanding atomic structures that is predictive of what can or will arise from aggregations of those structures. To paraphrase Hofstadter, who-and-or-what is pushing who-and-or-what around? A final word Mike & TAR. You have come here presumably because of the many sharp & knowledgeable minds on which to try your ideas. Rightly so insomuch as sharp & knowledgeable minds abound here. What is not right is that when these folks -after giving fair hearing and analysis- reject your ideas on sound reasoning and per se logical grounds, you persist in arguing as if you yourselves know better. Gentlemen, you do not know better and your persistence and petulant harangues only continue to emphasize that. Kindly stop. -

And you Sir are looking rather obtuse in this thread. Regards, Acme -
Au contraire. It is from the spoken ambiguity that the spelling airs arise. This is clear from the definition of homonym. homonym Arguably some of these words are better described/defined as homophones, but the writing errors are still rooted in the speaking and hearing. homophone Here is a more expansive explication from the first link:

Those bastards! The IP Board software has some definite problems in the easy-on-the-user department. Segue to another element of precision in writing which prompted an entire thread by imatfaal; the proper quoting of material. While his thread focuses on the 'how-to', the 'why' follows the reasoning for employing precision in writing in general; to enhance clarity and make the communication easy on the reader. >> imatfaal's thread, The Quote Function - a tutorial in several parts. Returning to the emphasis on English established in the title, there is the ubiquitous imprecision cast on the reader by English homonyms. A few that I love to hate include affect/effect, do/due/dew, to/too/two, and plane/plain. I have attached below a short list of homonyms; feal free two ad you're own. >> Short list of homonyms

Yes well, we are all filled up with what you say and saying it ad nauseum does not make it any more right than the first utterance. -

Acknowledged. I see the error frequently and only singled you out because the example was readily found. It's probably too late for you to edit the post now, but I appreciate your clarification. This does bring up another aspect of improving clarity and precision of writing and that is proofreading. Succinctly and in the vulgar vernacular, just do it. While there is an immediacy to online writing, there is nonetheless plenty of opportunity to p/review a reply before hitting Post. I was working on the proof of one of my poems all the morning, and took out a comma. In the afternoon I put it back again. ~ Oscar Wilde source

This is interesting because I tend to space out much of my stuff double as I find it more readable that way, on screen.I have had many comments, on more than one forum, to the effect that my readers, anyway, prefer this. This is in no way a criticism of your opinion. Perhaps those readers have nothing to compare your style to other than the non-indented single-spacing that online editors force on us. I don't so much object to a double-space between paragraphs containing multiple lines as I object to double-spaced single lines as in Externet's post in this thread. The Tab key of the typewriter has been adulterated by the computer and I demand a criminal investigation. Addendum: I was cut short on the last post due to a low battery and I have some additions. The no-indent double-space for paragraphs is referred to as block style and is perfectly acceptable. Traditionally it is recommended in more formal situations such as business. Besides my objection to Externet's post (the style, not the content) my primary whine is that computers make using the less formal indent style a pain in the fanny. PS Another irritating feature of the editor here is the automatic appending of a separate post to a recent post when the separate post is made arbitrarily close in time to the first.

Why insist on indenting, though? A blank space between paragraphs serves the same purpose. It wastes vertical space, but that is not in short supply on the Internet. ... -----I'm suggesting indenting because double-spacing wastes not only space, but time. The double-spacing forces the reader to scroll and interrupts the flow of the reading. It is every bit as much an impediment to communication as all caps or leetspeak. All we want are the facts.

It doesn't have anything to do with difficulty. We're here -hearts, brains, and all- so it happened. Accidents happen. Shit happens. Get over it. Quite so. And nothing of that requires anything more than happy circumstance, or per se accident. Yes; it is accident. That you can't understand that or how it might be is your mistake; your loss; your lacking of cleverness. No one arguing with you contends the universe isn't cool. If you were to moderate the word 'clever' then you should apologize for wasting our time to begin with and not waste it further. No one arguing with you contends the universe isn't cool. -----To replace a lost edition, I just bought a new copy of Strunk & White's Elements of Style. In 1918 Strunk wrote "make every word tell" and it is no less applicable today. -----For the serial comma issue Elements of Style instructs to use the comma preceding the conjunction in a list of 3 or more items. The example given is 'red, white, and blue'. -----Part of precision in writing is formatting and I particularly dislike how indenting is so difficult on a computer. Oh for the ease of the typewriter in this regard! (To indent these paragraphs I inserted white dashes.) -----Also a formatting issue, I find posts such as Externet's multiple-double-spaced one-liners hard to read and jarring. Indenting alone wouldn't help so I'd recommend a single-spaced bulleted listing. -----All-in-all, disregard for the reader -if not the rules- results in poor communication. Tighten it up people!

That's exactly what it is and that is my point. It's Hofstadter and it's Gödel, Escher*, Bach. (Gödel as in the mathematician, Escher as in the artist M.C Escher, Bach as in Johann Sebastian the composer.) And no, that's not his new book. The new book -out in 2007- is titled I Am A Strange Loop. *M.C. Escher @ Wikipedia -
Plants irrigation and temperature...
Acme replied to Externet's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
You're welcome. On the drip irrigation, I have some complaints and a solution. Complaint #1 is that buying the fittings is expensive. Complaint #2 is it takes a lot of fittings to get adequate coverage. Complaint #3 is that the fittings get in the way of weeding. Solution; use a watering wand. It's easy to use while standing, gets under plants & puts the water on the ground, easy & quick to get wider coverage. They're inexpensive and last for years. I've been growing veggies for over a decade and have no real special secrets over my initial 'plant, water, eat'. I've always been a renter and long-term or major gardening accommodation has always been out. Sometimes I just used pots. This year I've thrown in with the kids & grandkids & we have a few hundred square feet of space. We are growing raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, cucumbers, corn, radishes, spinach, beets, zucchini, yellow squash, 4 types of tomato, thyme, basil, peas, butternut squash, watermelon, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, jalapeño peppers, dill, cilantro, rosemary, rhubarb, parsley, carrots, mint, green onions, chives, garlic, and assorted native wildflowers. Something's bound to survive. -
I interpret your case as specifically lame Ed. Omnivores; balanced diet; moderation.
