  1. no. [hide] the most you can get is 1 one and then 1 some other number. you could never have 1 one followed by 1 one, that would just be 2 one. same thing for any other number, you can only have 3 threes, then 3 twos. so you can have 1112, but if you were ever going to write 1111 it would just be 21[/hide]
  2. -mt. dew cans -screwdrivers -sim rounds. 4. standard bullet casing, but with a wax pellet instead of metal. USMC uses it for training. leaves a bruise you wouldnt believe. -two handmade ceramic cups full of coins. one with the word "jose" the other with the most unbelievably ugly purple hearts you have ever seen. -my brothers inhaler -a stack of hardrive magnets, most of which are broken -a plastic miniature version of the buddy christ statue as seen in my avatar. -small plastic cup full of screws -soldering iron
  3. the thing marked cmos is the battery that powers cmos. keeps the clock up to date when you turn it off, saves various other minor settings. take that out for a bit if you change you bios password and then forget it : P the "hmm summore" is known as ISA. it was the standard before PCI. used for earlier cards, if you happen to have one. doesnt really show up on the newest boards. the big green plastic thing is actually a light metal, like aluminum, not sure exactly what kind of metal, but its a heat sink. transmits heat from the thing under it, which i forget the name of because i havent messed with this stuff in a long time, up into itself where its strange design results in a lot of surface area and therefore a lot of heat loss into the air. it keeps that handy little component from catching fire. as for your ribbon connectors (IDE slots) the two big ones are for harddrives and cd rom drives, and things like that. the small one is for floppy drives. the ram slots are different. if you get something besides SDRAM the little ridges will be in different spots. modern ram has one ridge, which is slightly off center to keep you from putting it in backwards. using a file to put the ridge in the right spot will NOT work. they are not compatable. it will, however, fry your memory and/or motherboard. oh yeah, and im not sure what the little brown slot is, although i have seen it before. i dont know what its used for or where it falls in the technology timeline, but a safe bet would be that its just another standard used for some cards. im betting if you dont know what it is then you probably dont have any use for it, so ive never worried about it : P
  4. i opened up explorer.exe. changed some stuff like the start button and menu, then closed explorer, replaced with the changed version and started it up. it makes the changes until i restart.
  5. no one knows why it changed it all back or how i can make it stay? O.o
  6. the fridge has been looked at, the compressor is not working right. phi for all.... you just think your oh so witty, dont you? : P ill let her know it got the scienceforums stamp of approval.
  7. it really does have to do with the frequency with most of them. some people cant stand tearing cotton because the of the frequency of the noise it makes, its the same with the chalk, and fingernails on a chalk board. im pretty sure its the same with biting the lollypop stick, but i dont know about the cement, thats weird enough that it might be related to something else.
  8. our refrigerator/freezer combo has a busted compressor unit. the fridge part is doing fine, the freezer is a lot warmer than it should be. still cold enough to make ice cubes, but just barely. keeping the freezer running is a huge energy drain because the broken compressor is working constantly to try to cool it off. we have a freezer in the garage we can move the stuff over to so my mom wants to know if there is some disadvantage to having the freezer portion turned off and the fridge still on. i think shes worried about it no being insulated enough between the two so the freezer will be leaching the cold out of the fridge or something like that. any problems you guys know of?
  9. we studied this in physics, i dont remember the specifics of it, but it has something to do with the frequency of the noise it makes. extremely common, dont worry about it. for me its cotton and chalk. i cant even think about using a chalk board.
  10. a little bit on google, havent tried ebay. i was discouraged when my search turned up nothing even remotely close to what i was looking for.
  11. im curious if any of you know where i can get a little box that plays a laugh track when you push a button, or if it even exists. i have this friend who has the dumbest, but most entertaining sense of humor ever. we were sitting at a gas station and my brother pointed to some girls in a car stopped at the light and said "jesse! go hit on em!" and he ran out to the light, and tapped on their window. when they rolled it down he said something along the lines of "you come here often?" so i want to give a him a laugh track either for his 21st birthday (in like a week) or for xmas if i cant get it on time. anyone have any ideas?
  12. it may be that some people are "equimanual" more easily, but my english teacher for freshman and sophomore year decided at some point that he wanted to be able to use both hands equally and forced himself to use his off hand till they were both as good. so id say its at least partially training.
  13. sooooo the people who installed the ducting in my house are... how do we feel about swearing on this site again? anyway, i dont like them. i build a little cart to carry my webcam and a very small flashlight down the duct. unfortunately, due to a combination of the ducts being filthy and installed at an angle, i cant roll the cart all the way down to the main duct. it branches off of the main at a 45 degree angle, then turns back straight to the wall when it gets to the boot. i was able to open up one of the ducts and look down it, without finding the hobo. i only managed to look one direction down the duct, so for all i know it could be off in the other direction, or it could be in any one of the other 3 main ducts in our house, or in the heater itself.... basically, im swamped. oh yeah... i can smell it now too.
  14. good idea YT, but unfortunately they are wrapped in insulation, which would be easy to remove, but a pain to put back. also, i forgot to mention. we already have tin snips, no borrowing necessary. i think they are yellow handled though...
  15. the plot thickens. the smells progression has been taking some odd turns. the heater is in the center of the house, it drops below the floor and then 4 ducts come out of it. one to the family room, one to my room and the master bedroom, one to the dining room/family room area at the front of the house, and one to the office/bathroom etc. so picture a cross under the house. the first place we noticed the smell was in the left branch of the cross, at pretty much the same time as we noticed the smell in the right branch. now my mother has started to notice it in her bathroom, which would represent the top branch of the cross... my bedroom is on the way to her bathroom, but she cant smell it in my room at all (i cant actually smell it anywhere and the only reason i still believe her at this point is because the cat has also been spending some time sniffing the vents) anyway... the point is we have no idea where in the vent it is, and given the fact that she noticed it in the office and the family room at about the same time were tempted to think there may even be more than one... i do have a webcam with a cord, if i get determined enough i may find a way to put that and a flashlight into the vent tomorrow.
  16. yes, you read correctly. the use of a mirror uncovers no rats/mice/hobos, but i can only see about 2 feet before it hits the main ducts and turns to either side.
  17. you need to run a pipe under a river that is a mile across and down the river 3 miles. laying pipe underwater costs x per foot, across dry land it costs y per foot. what path should you follow to finish the job the cheapest?
  18. lol... im sure. but finding it ourselves isnt really an option. im not comfortable with disconnecting the ducts under the house which limits our search to what we can see from the floor vents. so i take it hiring someone would be worth while?
  19. i got up in the morning and my mother decided to start my day off by informing me that i get to go crawling around under the house. several rooms smelled like a rotting carcass. after much exploration in the crawl space and a little testing to see when we could and couldnt smell it we decided that the dead thing must be in the heating system. we cant smell it under the house, we cant smell it when we tape off the vents, otherwise it reeks like all hell. so now i have a couple questions. my mother seems inclined to leave our vents taped up and wait for the thing to decompose and pass out of the stink phase of its rotting. i think this is a bad idea for a couple reasons. first, sanitary... how good can it really be to have a dead rodent in the system that blows air all over your house? second, what happens when we use the heater again? if this thing has fully decomposed doesnt that mean well be blowing pieces of dried rotten rat all over our house? i could handle removing the thing from under the house or in the attic, but i dont really feel up to taking apart and reassembling our heating system... what are your thoughts? is it a health risk? is it worth paying lots and lots of money to have someone come in professionally and open up our vents?
  20. when i restarted it changed it back... ?? how can i make it stay?
  21. i think its the correct pallete.... i downloaded both of the ones he linked to, loaded the one paintshop recognized.
