  1. it is being exerted over a distance if you measure according to the water instead of the land. the river is pushing on the boat, energy is going through the anchor and pushing on the ground to keep it from moving, essentially by pulling it forward through the water. i dont know which is right, im just presenting this side of the arguement as best i can
  2. there is distance relative to the water, does that not count just because its touching land?
  3. the purpose of homework is to solidify the concepts in the students mind. they give you homework to make you go home and practice. i learn very fast in general, but i learn even better from audio, especially when its demonstrated. given that much, homework for me can be rephrased as "tedius gruntwork". i listened in class, i got the information. i understand. i dont need to go home and waste 3 hours of my day studying it. i know of no better way to ruin a students enthusiasm for learning than boring them. i LOVE physics. i absolutely hated physics class because of all the stupid crap they make you do afterwards. anyway. i disagree with any kind of mandatory community service. the idea behind community service is that you are giving your time and energy for the good feeling it gives you from helping others. if they make you its no longer charity, your being paid with a highschool diploma. it defeats the purpose of volunteer work.
  4. ?? i dont really know how to answer that since i dont know the exact definition of horsepower. the anchor is exerting force on the ground, does that count as producing horsepower? asimovs answer sounds kinda right.
  5. you should also pay special attention to repeat letters, like "PYYP" there are only so many letters that can double up like that.
  6. care to explain why? (im assuming your talking to me) is it because it just sounds like a rebelious teenager, or some other reason?
  7. we can store pretty much any kind of energy, the sound from a clap of thunder may be a little tougher, but im sure we can find a way to turn that vibration into an electrical current. microphone anyone? you might have an easier time with lightning.
  8. i already do appreciate the experience of helping other people, thats not the issue. the issue is the idea that school feels the need to encroach more and more into what i do OUTSIDE of school. i personally object very strongly to homework. its not my fault if they cant teach my classmates everything they need to know in the time they're given, i got all the information from the lecture and im going to ace the test. homework is a waste of my time. i dont understand at what point schools decided they had the right to dictate what people do with the rest of their time. the schools job is to teach me and then give me a letter so i can show other people i understand what they taught me. that requires nothing but a test.
  9. it is being introduced in public schools too. in order to pass my Civics class we were required to do 25 hours of community service. civics is required to graduate. i am very very against this.
  10. nice tater, also, "which path would your brother say is right?" will get either of them pointing at the wrong path.
  11. not so much that it is a speed increase as it will cause a speed increase. newton is a measure of force. just like gravity (a force) is written m/s(squared), so are newtons. except gravity is immune to the mass of the object, with newtons the acceleration depends on the mass, so you have Kg m/s^2 . remember, surplus force causes acceleration. as for your whole impenetrable barrier thing, physically impossible. one of them has to give. the force required to stop something instantly is infinite, which means the closer you get to both of them being impenetrable the greater force exerted on both surfaces (it hurts more to get hit with a bowling ball than a basket ball, the bowling ball exerts a larger force on your head, but over a shorter time, the basketball gives, so its a lesser force over more time) actually, both of them have to give, the ball bending doesnt help slow down the atoms at the front edge of the ball, so the wall has to give at least enough to slow down the front edge.
  12. because thats not INFINITE. thats really really big. there is nothing infinite about any of the things we can measure, like the sizes of galaxies.
  13. senior (asking what math class might yield more important information)
  14. i think all my favorites have already been posted on this forum : P sorry.
  15. im sorry, but there is no opinion about any of this. infinity is the word we use to describe things that cant be measured. thats the definition of the word. its not like infinity is a thing that just happens to be really really big. the entire purpose of the word is for things beyond measure. NO. NOT infinitely small or large. very very small and very very large. NOT INFINITELY. infinity doesnt mean "gods universe". go look up the word. the ONLY thing it means, and the only reason its a word at all, is things with no limit. if it has no limit you cant measure it. i think the main problem here is your obsession with religion. your trying to use infinity to mean all the lovely beautiful stuff your god made. thats not it. your looking for a discussion on spacetime, or "the universe", not infinity.
  16. i did your step one to find the length of the elastic off of the ground, then did sin with that length and the hypotenus for theta in the middle. doubled that and subtracted it from 360 so i could find how much of the circumference the string was still touching. that +2 times the length of the tangent, - the circ. of the the planet= stretch. ill try to come up with a new one for you guys
  17. i get 3.3 meters, using reverses method. im gonna work through it again now. (think i have rounding problems) now i got 8.3329 meters... i think thats more accurate than the first one, but how close it is i have no idea : P
  18. really really big.
  19. reverse, that actually sounds much easier than my way... nice.
  20. wow... im in calculus and i dont have the faintest clue how to even start with that... ill think about it.
  21. good work. that post was just barely not a worthless pile of shit. your response to my post was nothing but an insult directed at me, it wasnt convincing anyone of anything. you have already stated that there is no answer (without bothering to put any thought into explaining why). i made a post where i tried to explain WHY there is no answer. if you dont like that keep it to yourself. read the title of the ****ing web page. so... i guess you really have nothing worth hearing to say. you get a special honor, first name on my ignore list : P
  22. why would you bother to say that? are you here to piss people off? give some constuctive feedback or shut the **** up.
  23. yes, there has to be a spot, but there is no way to prove where that spot is. with the facts he gave us it is impossible to prove that he is at the same place at any given time on the two days. what if on the first day he went 3/4 of the way, then stopped and meditated for an hour, then finished, and on the second day he went 1/4 of the way and then meditated and finished his journey? if he goes the same pace and starts at the same time he meet at a certain point. if he stopped in the middle on each day it would be an entirely different point. we dont know when he stops or what pace he goes at so the question is impossible to answer.
