I definitely see this as being developed as an application first, but I think if it's developed well enough it would work better as an integration especially if you can expand the computer to be integrated throughout your house or linked to your phone.

I want to start working on an opensource project to break up the monotony of school. I'm thinking of an OS that uses voice commands to interact with the user. If I tell windows 7 I want to play a game and some music and while you're at it show me the latest sports news windows just stares at you blankly. What kind of shit is that? I'm hoping there's enough knowledgeable people on this forum to lay the groundwork for this project. I'd like my OS to say back to me "Which game would you like to play? Music coming right up and I'll read off the latest news as soon as you're ready." Basically this would start from the ground up or at the very least built off a basic version of Linux. I'm open to suggestions. I want to hear what features you all would want in a custom OS. As well as suggestions about how to go about implementing them. I'm pretty new to OS programming so be as detailed as possible.

So much heat coming from multiple devices. My pc and xbox are pumping the heat in my room to 80+ degrees. As well as the fans which can keep a person up at night. I'm looking into a new case for my pc as well as installing a custom water cooling system. This got me to thinking about cooling my xbox as well. Is there such a case out there that can fit all of my xbox 360 components as well as my pc components? I was really interested in the CM HAF X, but I don't believe I can mount 2 motherboards into that case. Or perhaps is there any way to partition parts of my pc to running my xbox and trashing xbox components? I saw the Origin big O which is EXACTLY what I'm looking for, but I'm not spending 14+ grand on the setup when I can build it myself to my budget if only I can find a case to fit all this hardware in.

I'm starting to understand the terminology. I can easily write out the proof for number 2, but the wording on number 1 is severely tripping me up. The statement is just about self sufficient yet its part of the homework set. I may be mistaken but it reads to me as if it's saying "a chair is defined as a seat".

1.) Let X and Y be sets and f:X→Y a function. Also let A с X and B с Y. (a) A с f-1(f(A)) with equality when f is injective. (b) f(f-1(B)) с B with equality when f is surjective. 2,) Let f:X→Y and g:Y→Z be functions. (a) If g ◦ f is injective, then f is injective. (b) If g ◦ f is surjective, then g is surjective. 3.) (a) Let R+ с R be the subspace of positive reals. Show that R is homeomorphic to R+ . (b) Show that (a,b) is homeomorphic to (0,1) . © Show that [a,b] is homeomorphic to [0,1] . 4.) Let X be a space. (a) If X is Hausdorff, then every convergent sequence has a unique limit. (b) X is Hausdorff if and only if the diagonal ΔX is closed in X×X . 5.) Let X be a metric space with metric d. Suppose that x є X and A is a closed subset not containing x . Show that there are disjoint open sets U and V containing x and A respectively. I'm not looking for answers. I've never taken a proofs course, or linear algebra or anything of that sort. My math background is Cal3. I'm having a hard time understanding the terminology such as injective, surjective, homeomorphic, Hausdorf, etc. Can anyone help me understand these?

Does anybody know of the best way to go about learning to create websites? I'm currently a full time student with some mediocre programming background, I'd like to get into website design to make some money while I'm going to school. I have plenty of experience on the business end of it, but I've never created my own website, don't know anything about server hosting, domain name registrations, etc. I suspect creating some templates would be first priority, build a portfolio that I can build websites from per request of the customer.

1. As many features as my place is capable of handling. I'm inexperienced with most of the things that I'd be working with, but it'd be nice to have some contraptions for windows, blinds, thermostats, fans, lights, etc. Don't care for too much surveillance equipment. Whatever I can build myself instead of buying would be preferable. I'd like to put some automated processes into it such as open blinds at dawn, dim the lights when there's lots of natural lighting, open/close windows to help cool/heat the house for fresh air and energy saving. Connectivity with email, music, phone, weather, etc. Maybe install simple mics/speakers, light/temp sensors throughout the house. 2. I have a decent computer I built myself a year ago, AMD quad core processor, only 4gb ram I plan on upgrading. I really plan to build a new one, AMD runs too hot, the case blows and its all on a microATX motherboard. With this in mind I can build the new one with focus on whatever would best suit a high sensory input network. I don't know much about networking hardware, perhaps there's specialized equipment for these types of systems? 3. I have some experience with a handful of different programming languages, mostly simple logic stuff. Almost no experience with programming networks, though I'm eager to learn from the ground up.

I'm researching this area as a side project, maybe wire up a room or two as an experiment. Major networking involved, I'm trying to try to recreate a rudimentary version of Ironman's Jarvis or Caprica's Serge. Anybody have an information or reference material?

Economy as far as I know only plays a factor into new construction. We do insurance work mostly and you wouldn't know there was a crashing economy dealing with insurance companies. Practically I'm trying to school my way into the neural networking field, but I watch a lot of scifi shows. The shows seems to fire up an interest in smart homes, virtual voice activated butlers. Just the idea of networking multiple appliances into one, being able to easily manipulate things back and forth. Having a program that you can connect to and that will learn your preferences, etc. Examples, Caprica: Serge -- Ironman: Jarvis -- etc.

I like the story, never heard that one before. One small step at a time, I sometimes forget that and get ahead of myself. The snail like pace of school can do that to you I guess. As grandeur as these ideas are, reverse engineering them into "licking and crawling" steps makes them seem pretty simple as my experience tells me. Does anyone have any tips or experience with any books, ideas, theories, thinking exercises, etc. that could interest an amateur computer scientist with no advanced formal training?

I'm ok with being realistic about it, but these are my dreams. If you are going to dream I figure I should dream big. Plus I don't plan on making but a fraction of my income from being a scientist. I own a multi-million dollar construction corporation that me a my dad started a year ago. We expanded into 4 cities already and growing even bigger. I plan on learning about investing, buying rental real estate, etc. I'm pretty good at making money when I want it. I'm just looking for a vent for some of this hyper-imagination, preferably through some scientific means.

Junior at UT Austin, majoring in Computer Science, I plan to continue on for my PhD I sit around day dreaming a LOT. I have a decent social life, but all I can think about is science, economics, business, etc. I want to turn my ideas into reality, develop neural interface devices, artificial intelligence, turn them into a prospering business, design smart houses, build myself a multi-million dollar waterside mansion, rub elbows with powerful politicians, attempt to prevent the degradation of scientific advancement in the US, get grants to build Utopian science communities. All the ambition you could imagine with no vent. I'm learning the basics at a painfully slow pace with not much incentive to get ahead of my learning since I'll just be relearning it again in class. I don't really have any mentors or peers to discuss ideas with or to learn from, with emphasis on the learn from part. I've attempted to read textbooks to try to learn and develop my own vents for my curious nature, but they are just so incredibly dull. I'm reaching out, I really don't know what to do. Any tips?
