Death by daffodil has a nice ring to it. He could have a lunch box with cheese and onion bulb sandwiches in it. "There have been several cases of death by daffodil poisoning in which the bulbs were eaten in mistake for onions. The effect is extremely fast acting and you don't need to eat many of them" http://www.qi.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=3280&start=0&sid=2196b9c5796f98eded7a6944e992bb2f

What is described is a need for impedance matching. Two common methods are (a) using a transformer. Which provides efficient transfer of power without being able to add power. http://nuclearpowert.../h1011v4_46.htm or (b) using a transistor as an emitter follower. As well as providing efficient transfer of power, this can add power as it amplifies current. (taken from the transistor supply) http://www.carlomoze...iles/Unit_4.pdf

If you aren't familiar with calculus you can still see that this result is extremely likely to be true by making x= to a tiny bit more than 2 and then x=to a tiny bit less than 2. One results in a bit more than 12 and one results in a bit less than 12. If you plot different values of x from(say) x=1 to x=3 and include those plots close to x=2 you will get a curve that obviously indicates 12 on the Y axis when x=2. If interested and you have not yet done calculus give it a try - have fun!

#7 refers. If you calculate (8-x^3)/(2-x) when x=2 you get 0/0. However I want to watch a TV prog now so I'll just say I make this example of 0/0 equal to 12. If anyone doubts this then I'll come back later.

This is only my idea of how a moral sense came into being and then had to develop. First of all it had to do with necessity if the human race was to survive. Mothers had to have an instinctive urge to protect and feed their young, who are so helpless that they need constant attention in their early life. This meant that it was helpful to survival if a partner who could not have children (i.e. male) helped with at least their protection and the aquisition of food. So the concepts of caring and sharing were needed in the early evolution of man. Without these instincts the human race may not have survived. We see these instincts taking their place in the animal kingdom (who presumably don't know of God). As people gathered into larger communities these basic instincts had to be widened so that people felt they were part of a "larger family"- the tribe. At this point if the group was to live in harmony then rules had to be made that would say (for instance) that even if hungry you must not steal your neighbours food. However, if you were hungry and your neighbour had plenty then he should share with you. But who makes the rules? Who insists that this is what you should do when most, but not all, members of the tribe agree on this? If at this point you invent a power greater than any individual in the tribe and call it God then problem solved. There is nobody that can be argued against. God is really the majority vote of the tribe and we would call people who follow this path moral and transgressors immoral. We would call the set of rules The Law. I'm completely "out of my tree" really - so these are just some simple thoughts. Later edit - Just googled "out of my tree" and it can have a different meaning to what I meant I meant "not in an area that I'm familiar with"!!

Antibiotics OK - carbon monoxide no! Men cry sometimes too - but usually privately. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNNiBcU3BR4

Many, many years ago it was explained to me that 0/0 is indeterminate. It's value depends on the equation which when simplified gave you 0/0. This was in my introduction to calculus - enough of which I retained to pass an exam and then forgot! I personally would like you to make 0/0=42 as that is the ultimate answer to Life, The Universe and Everything. http://en.wikipedia....iki/42_(number)

I guess the attachment is more "focussed thoughts"! It's all an uncle of my wife was allowed to send at irregular intervals from "Somewhere in the war". I can only imagine the thoughts of family when these postcards arrived on the door mat. They must have wondered what would be crossed out next time (if indeed there was to be a next time) This particular man was evacuated at Dunkirk, fought in North Africa and then up through Italy. He would never speak about it.

Sorry - don't know anything about tower 7. I thought you were giving credence to the number of conspiracy theories about the whole horrific business.

Calculating the hover height of the Harrier jet

The link doesn't answer your question - but does indicate the idea is feasible http://www.wired.com...-a-single-tank/ The attachment may give you some help (from the second link) http://en.wikipedia....ing_Peak_Height -

If you google Galilean telescope you will find all sorts of information. You can't expect anyone on the forum to draw your diagram as its homework.

What Physics fact or theory fascinated you the most?

I am amazed at the frequency (no pun intended) that the sine function and the sine wave seems to crop up in so many branches of physics and engineering. -

During my time I have been an instructor in the Forces (many foreign students), Civilian instructor teaching foreign technicians, College lecturer with the odd foreign class. In other words teaching technical matters to students who mostly were not of "degree standard". Even at this level the standard of English, even the technical content, was always so good that it was never a problem. The nationalities involved included Iranians, Egyptians, Jordanians, Argentinians, Libyans and Omanis. I am ashamed to say I speak no foreign languages at all. If the Italian establishments want to attract students from other countries, who are prepared to pay for tuition, then my experience suggests using English may be a good idea.

My wife used to get travel sick on coaches. She bought some special armbands from a well known chemist. She is never sick when she wears them. On the other hand one of my grandchildren, when a child, used to get car sick. He was cured by sitting him on a "magic towel" which we told him would stop the sickness. I have always thought it wisest to refrain from expressing my thoughts to either party in case I stop them working!

I'm really not sure what your teacher is getting at. Perhaps he/she feels that shorter time periods will be less reliable than longer ones, tending to give more ups and downs. However if you are looking into acceleration (or deceleration) perhaps the idea is to produce a smooth graph rather than a series of straight lines. As I say - not sure myself!

5 weeks is a short time and temperature is very variable. I depends on several factors e.g. wind direction, atmospheric conditions such as high or low pressure etc.. Here in the UK we had colder temperatures in April than we did in March. If you chose 5 weeks as March ran into April you might conclude temperature falls as summer approaches! " it was the coldest April since 1989. Unusually, April was colder than March " http://www.metoffice....uk/climate/uk/

Are our fears of natural apocolypse well-founded?
Joatmon replied to dstebbins's topic in Earth Science
Just a thought if we imagine that the human race can continue to exist for an infinite amount of time. You, dear reader, have to die and we could probably calculate the odds against you dying in the same month and year as me. Quite a big number but far from astronomical. We could include a third person and calculate the odds that the three of us will die in the same month and year. A bigger number, but manageable. By similar argument there is a finite number that gives the odds against everybody in the world dying in that month and year resulting in the end of the human race. The number is astronomical - but less than infinite. The odds probably indicate that the sun changing into a red giant and swallowing the earth is likely to occur first. However - things can happen against the odds - otherwise we wouldn't buy lottery tickets! -
