If they have detergent properties it is likely that they bond with the lipids in the membrane, like soap does with fat, a hydrophobic/hydrophobic interaction. So its possible they somehow disrupt the fluidity of the cell membrane and thus stop the cell functioning properly. Edit: just an educated guess..... don't use that in your assignment
  2. Community - All the organisms that inhabit a particular area; an assemblage of populations of different species living close enough together for potential interaction. Stop being a smartass, I'm not confusing anything.
  3. Hmmmm perhaps 'twas the antifreeze....... I noticed it said traces of SO2 added...... tasted like boysenberry mmmmmmmm poisonberry
  4. hmmmm just had red wine and beer, no artificial colourings there.
  5. Yes, in order to understand you have to understand.
  6. Yes but that would require me to think ahead and stop drinking....not easy to do when you're drunk..... I took some iburoprofen(sp?) instead. P.S. I've drunk more before and not had a hangover.... maybe it was doing it in the sun while playing backyard cricket?
  7. Examples please. We would have to break the competition exclusion principle by over ruling it with our intelligence, attributing resources equally and using extreme interspecific altruism. Not things humans are very good at, we barely have intraspecific altruism down. Exactly, I wouldn't want to eat what my cat had for breakfast..... I don't think it was vice versa though.
  8. I can, you seem to be suffering from a case of "I saw it in a film so it must be true" syndrome.
  9. Not really, we interfer with all parts of the ecosystem, since we play a role in those organisms ecosytem they are part of our community.
  10. ....after last night on the piss. I had a bottle of red and 4 beers.... about 12 standard drinks..... what causes the headache in a hangover.... and don't just say "dehydration", how does dehyration cause pain? Oh, and where did I leave my glasses? (not the wine ones)
  11. I saw it in a movie so it must be true.
  12. I'm pretty sure they won't make a cybernetic photosynthetic system anywhere near as efficient as a purely biological one.......... perhaps we need to make our own life forms and chip their brains so we can remote-control them.
  13. Ummm are you forgetting the competition exclusion principle?? "Two species cannot coexist in a community if their niches are are identical." Since the Human community is global, I think that rules that niche out. Hmmm except perhaps for aquatic animals... maybe intelligent plants too, the nich would be significantly different.
  14. Perhaps if you analyse your scifi interests you will see the true motive behind your desire for man to pursue space travel research.
  15. But you are a Trekky?
  16. Because you are a treky?
  17. Go the cephalopods.
  18. Too much StarTrek.
  19. Maybe test the effectiveness of different brands of cleaner at removing stains....... and add something like vinegar for a cheap option to see what the cost effectiveness is....... use water as a control. You could measure the effectiveness by just observing the stain, or you could figure out some kind of assay that would allow you to measure how much fat is left..... oh and for good measure, see how effective urine is.
  20. I think sayo was trying to point out that even if we could feed our thoughts into a digital device these would have to be fed into the receivers brain somehow, not an easy task so coversion to sound would be the best option...... best to just speak into a receiver maybe.
  21. .....none......osmosis and diffusions are simply governed by the laws of physics, the plant uses active transport to counter these. All are necessary in order to maintain an offset equilibrim...... which is part of my definition of life.
