Stem Cell therapy for Multiple Sclerosis
hitmankratos replied to darkenergy's topic in Medical Science
Good question. I'd like to know too. -
Hey everyone, I was wondering what kind of research is going on right now on stem cells? For what kind of applications? I'm actually looking for a projet that I can do for a future science fair project in that field... So any ideas would be welcome

What do you think of my experiment?
hitmankratos replied to hitmankratos's topic in Microbiology and Immunology
For those of you who want to know how this turned out : I tried many things on E.Coli with several phages. I even tried to mix up phages to see if they have better effects on the bacteria. Anyway, it went really well. I got 6th place in the regional sciecne fair, but in the provincials (I live in Quebec, Canada, and this is how it works), I got like 4 prizes (bronze medal in my category) and I'm going to the Canada Wide Science fair Yay ! -
Hello, We have a science project where we have to produce a maximum output of electricity using hydroelectricty. We have little 12V motor and all the necessary gears and all... The rest is for us to decide.... So, what should I do? I don't know anything about hydroelectricity/turbines and all...We thought (my team and I) about doing a Pelton wheel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelton_wheel) that we will eventually attach to the motor and produce that way some electricity with water but my question is: How can I maximize the energy? Is there some things that I should know about turbines and stuff that can help us optimize the produced output? Thanks in advance. If my question isn't clear, please tell me and I'll explain.

Hello everyone, I know there are a lot of informations on this on the internet, but I just can't find something vulgarised. All is too complicated, or too simple (for a Grade 10 student). Ok, so I've read there are many ways bacteria can aqquire an antibiotic resistance. The most common is with the plasmids. Where do these plasmids come from in the first place? Is it a mutation? I've also read that bacteria can mutate and get a resistance that way...How does that happen? Any other ways for aqquiring an antibiotic resistance? Thanks in advance.

ok great thanks everyone.
-
Yeah but why does the donor share his plasmids? What's in it for him ?
-
Hi, Why do bacteria share plasmids together? What pushes them to do that? Is it some way to multiply? Thanks in advance.

If we add HCL to a river that is alkalic (due to a NaOH spill for example) to neutralize it, would it kill the fish ? Or would it save them from the NaOH?
-
Ion exchanger? Nice. I'll look for that. And we are allowed to use anything we could for this project. It's not like some exam to test us, it's just a problem and they need to see how we solve it. CaptainPanic, we've found the way to neutralize NaOH if we have little samples (we did that in lab and works) but how would that be done in big quantity? I can't just say that we let nature repair it because there are fish that can die and all... Ion exchanger? Nice. I'll look for that. And we are allowed to use anything we could for this project. Link between pH and concentration [Answered]
hitmankratos replied to hitmankratos's topic in Chemistry
What?? I don't get it (Sorry). Does it mean it has 0.032mol/L of pH ??? Is that what you're saying? -

Thank you for your replies. lol, simple calculations ! Sorry if the following is going to seem really dumb, but what does 0.032mol/ml represent? What does it mean? It's all numbers and facts but I just don't understand the point of doing this stuff... -
Link between pH and concentration [Answered]

I don't know...It's really messed up... Is 0.16mol the necessary quantity to neutralize the liquid we started with (which is NaOH added to some water)? Is there a way for me to find out the concentration from what I have? (I don't understand any logic in all this...if anyone can explain it it would be great.) And Gilded, how did you get the 0.032? -
Hi, We just started chemestry at school and I'm really not getting it very well... Here is an experiment we did in lab that I don't fully understand (the purpose..): we got this sample of a this contaminated river and it had pH of 9. I took 5ml of it then added 0.16ml of HCL (at 1mol/ml), and it now gives us a pH of 7... Is there a way to get the concentration of the first liquid out of this? I really don't understand this stuff....

Hello, I've got a few questions about Caustic Soda (actually anything you can tell me about it would be useful :D) What would happen if a truck containing caustic soda for example crashes and the NaOH flows into a river? Would the fish die? Is there a way to decontaminate this river? Maybe adding more water (or an acid) to neutralize it?

HELP ! Chemestry question (I'm not sure of my answer)
hitmankratos replied to hitmankratos's topic in Homework Help
Thanks for your answers everyone...very helpful. For the dot vs comma, I know about that already, the thing is that I go to a french school (so everything I study is in French), and when I was translating the problem in English, I wrote it in commas... ) -
What do you think of my experiment?
hitmankratos replied to hitmankratos's topic in Microbiology and Immunology
Yeah sure no problem. I've met my two reaserchers and we're gonna start the experimentations soon...I'm probably going to do that on E. Coli and try many phages on them like T4 and lambda... I'll tell you how it goes when the experiment is all done. -
Hi, Okay. The question is how many moles are there in 2.107 * 10^24 water molecules. Now I'd say something like 10 because the Avogadro Number is 2,022 * 10^23 and because 10^24 is a lot more then 10^23... But is there a precise way of doing this? I know this question may seem a little bit stupid but sorry...Just started chemestry :D Thanks in advance

Any comments?

I Need Help With Phage Therapy
hitmankratos replied to XrenegadeZ's topic in Microbiology and Immunology
For these 2, you just have to use the right phage to attack the right bacteria...If it's a specialist who does that, then there shouldn't be anyproblem, no? And new antibiotics are more expensive to develop then any phage... So I think they're pretty much equal... The only big problem I've heard of would be the immune system blocking the phage...
