NASA to Announce Success of Long Galactic Hunt
Gilded replied to Gilded's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
I'm pretty sure many (and on science forums most) people are aware that such distant events have actually happened a long time ago and that we have merely observed them now. And btw it's around 26,000 years not 500,000. I think it's okay to say that the supernova as a visual phenomenon from Earth's point of reference is 140 years old but saying that the actual stellar remnant is 140 years old is a bit on the border. I find it odd that the article on the actual Chandra page didn't mention anything about the distance, though. -
NASA to Announce Success of Long Galactic Hunt
Gilded replied to Gilded's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Turns out it was a quite recent supernova. Meh. -
NASA to Announce Success of Long Galactic Hunt "WASHINGTON -- NASA has scheduled a media teleconference Wednesday, May 14, at 1 p.m. EDT, to announce the discovery of an object in our Galaxy astronomers have been hunting for more than 50 years. This finding was made by combining data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory with ground-based observations." Oooh I'm excited already. I was trying to think of cosmic phenomena or objects that have been theorized but haven't been detected as of yet but only recent ones came to mind, with theoretical histories of around 20 years or less, where as this is something that has eluded detection for over half a century. Looking at the wording I suppose it could also be something that has been detected elsewhere but thus far not in our galaxy. What do you think it could be?

For quite some time I've had a problem with connecting to my friend's IP (and vice versa). At first I thought it was a simple firewall issue but it seems that that's not the case since the problem persists even when firewalls are disabled. We've been trying to counter this with various P2P programs, some of which offer some sort of relay/proxy system, with no results. What makes this even more confounding is that the problem exists in some cases even when a third party has hosted a game or network. For instance I can't connect to someone's Dawn of War game if my friend has joined it already and vice versa. The connection isn't completely "severed" apparently, since sometimes a hosted network or game is visible but trying to connect results in a timeout. What makes this even weirder is that I haven't encountered a problem like this with anyone else and my friend has only had this problem with my IP. Any thoughts? Secret government plot to prevent us from playing RTS games together?

I faintly remember a time when I used to post more. :|

I recall hearing of these "Internets". It isn't that big of a deal really, just integrate some Internet-related education to primary school. "Timmy & the Man Who Asked "a/s/l?", Whoring yourself on MySpace - How to do it right, Trolling 101, How to appear cool on forums, Proper Use of Avatars - Naked chick or nuclear explosion?, Timmy Learns About Sarcasm, the Language of the Internet". Later on science subjects could have courses like "The Internet - Auditorium for crackpot theories". And most importantly, I think it's critical that children learn at an early age that the Internet is NOT a big truck that you can just dump something on, it's a series of tubes.

Making thermite is always a good decision. Aluminum-iron oxide thermite is probably one of the safest pyrotechnic mixtures. In amounts of several kilograms it's kind of scary though.

Hmm interesting. I think it'll be a while until angsty teenagers can paint their rooms with carbon nanotubes though. :|

Dihydrogen Monoxide! Learn about the dangers today

Drinking deuterated water instead of normal = a bad and expensive idea. Drinking tritiated water instead of normal = a worse end even more expensive idea. Didn't some pissed off power plant employee put tritiated reactor coolant water in a water cooler some time back? Mmm-mmm, superheavy and supertasty. -
YT and antimatter? Something awesome and perhaps destruction on a planetary scale is bound to ensue.

Good to hear. And actually yesterday I thought about it and realized I might be sort of a 3rd generation composer as far as spacesynth goes since I have listened to a lot of quite recent music of the genre (such as Finnish projects Electron, Mark Vera and Galaxion), even more so than to the original and pioneering artists of the genre. So I'd say I'm influenced by Jarre and others of the era but somewhat undirectly.

Does YT play the guitar in a power metal band? Does Phi for All compose jazz-reggae-trance fusion songs? Is Klaynos the lead singer of a boy band? Read all about it here! I think there was a "do you play any instrument" thread at some point in the past but not a thread like this (at least I couldn't find one after a painstaking 30 seconds of searching). Anyway, I thought it might be cool to have a thread like this, who knows what sort of insanely talented musicians have found their way to SFN. ...Also I wanted to shamelessly promote my spacesynth project Baryonic Collision (hey it even has a sciency name).

O_o I didn't know you listen to such quality music. Rammstein and Prodigy are one of my favorite bands, I especially like Rammstein's Keine lust and Mein teil and Prodigy's Diesel Power and Breathe.

I'm not sure, recently I've been starting to feel the urge to... to actually post meaningful stuff and... to contribute somehow. It's horrible but I'm sure it'll pass soon enough.

Yes, for example Lucy Lawless has found sexual assaults by 16-year-olds to be a real problem. But thank god there are institutions for these disturbed individuals. Also, damn this forum for its lack of an edit button. Back in the good ol' days it used to have one. :| Which was nice since I nevre cechk my spleling or garmmar befroe I psot. Edit: Hey wait a minute, now it has one. Tihs is mgaic!

Nevermind, service got postponed three years due to mental and physical condition. Should've kept my mouth shut about the pine tables I suppose. I think this is ultimately a good thing for me, allowing lots of time for studying or wrecking mayhem on a galactic scale. Anyway since this bastard of a thread has already been made I'm happy to answer your questions. Generally speaking civilian service has been somewhat frowned upon in Finland, one reason being that a great deal of company CEOs etc. were either war veterans, had war veterans for fathers or were overly patriotic military nuts for some other reason that lead them to think that only some sort of no-good faggots choose civilian service. After the training period (which apparently is 4 weeks due to a recent law being passed), the service itself can be done at any non-profit facility or organization in Finland. This includes many things ranging from prisons and elementary schools to hospitals, museums and those places where they try to make 16-year-olds realize they should do less heroine.

My civilian service starts tomorrow. :| While the Finnish army service typically takes 6-12 months, the non-military civilian service is always 12 months. (Although with my luck it probably gets reduced to 8 months after I've completed it) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscientious_objection_throughout_the_world#Conscientious_objection_in_Finland On the other hand after the training period of three weeks it's basically just a normal job that you do for (nearly) free so it probably won't hinder my forum spamming to any noticeable extent.

I was supposed to try boric acid + methanol but then realized I don't have any methanol, it's actually pretty hard to come by these days. Even denaturing is done mainly with methyl ethyl ketone.

Whether it's blowing up energy drink cans, melting steel pans, wife carrying or just being incredibly drunk all the time we sure do.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otm7x3rpToQ Contains: -Boric acid + ethanol antifreeze burned, a fairly nice green flame but I've seen it done better on some videos. Any suggestions? -An awesome line by the demoman class from Team Fortress 2. -Lots of commercial fireworks (that really suck in Finland btw) dumped in an old milk container thing. Not very scientific but quite awesome. -Varying amounts of flash powder in various containers. -A 3kg Fe2O3/Al thermite in a zinc bucket that I couldn't capture in it's entirety since it ignited when the camera was off. -MacGyver.
-
Why hasn't Phi for All made any ice cubes recently? He lost the recipe. Man I've missed this thread.

'ello, I be back! So may the irrelevant posting commense, lol.

Smithell's cold flame? http://www.lateralscience.co.uk/phos/index.html And here's your daily dose of Cthulhu mythos: "But what frightened me most was that flaming column; spouting volcanically from depths profound and inconceivable, casting no shadows as healthy flame should, and coating the nitrous stone with a nasty, venomous verdigris. For in all that seething combustion no warmth lay, but only the clamminess of death and corruption." (The Festival, H.P. Lovecraft)

As Finland has a separate paragraph for punishments against people who detonate nuclear weapons in polar regions for the environmental damage it causes (believe it or not) I have a reason to believe other countries might too! But I suppose if you used another method such as a blowdryer there would be no legal base for stopping you.
