Talking of triggering super novas, has there been even wild theories about how to trigger one? Or is it just one of those things that we won't do, no matter what? I can't see another way than suddenly increasing the star's mass dramatically causing it to collapse and then go nova, and that's not gonna happen.

Talking of mercury, if you have some extra (which is usually the case if you buy in bulk quantities) and you're feeling silly enough, why not make some mercury fulminate.

"If intelligent life arose somewhere that was then sending signals 10 million years ago, we wouldn't see them - we weren't looking then." Hey, good point. Continuous signals are of course always better than the non-continous ones, such as the nuke blasts. "The largest nuclear device ever built had a yeild of 50Mt" Not really, it's the largest one detonated. And now that it's not going to detonate anywhere near Earth, they should go with at least couple of gigatons. :>

"Chems that most folk don`t have or can`t buy without liscence :)" It's sad how some high explosives can be synthed even without those. :/

Heh. If they find some sort of single-celled organisms on for example Mars, I'm not going to call them Martians. >:/ Btw, how likely do you keep the fact that another planet than Earth in the solar system has developed multicelled organisms?

"if I were ET, that`s exactly where and what I`de look for :)" The Brittish aren't extra-terrestrial?! And yeah, highly advanced aliens could teach us a whole lot of stuff. Efficient fusion reactors, more complete understanding to the universe and quantum mechanics... the list goes on. It's a bugger though if they don't like humans and eliminate us.

From this comes to mind: How old is the Milky Way? I mean, regionally, so that it could've been possible that for example 5 billion years ago, some planet developed to the stage where Earth was 3 billion years ago, giving possible lifeforms on that planet a longer period to evolve than here on Earth. If that would be the case, then it's rather odd that we haven't seen a similar signal as MadScientist suggested, or received a radio-signal from another species.

"I suspect that creation events are actually rather rare" Yeah, abiogenesis isn't equal to water + proper compounds. Lots of other factors involved too. But the possibilities of abnormal (compared to Earth) carbon creatures or even Si-based lifeforms brighten the odds a bit. Perhaps some people think it's naiive to think that our solar system has other life, but it's certainly naiive to think that any other planet in the universe doesn't have life.

Two men are walking down the street. The other asks: "Hey, if you were like camping with your friend and he like... had sex with you when you drink too much and pass out, would you tell anyone? I mean, it would be really embarrassing!" The other man thinks for a while. "No, I don't think I'd have the guts", he then replies. "I see", the other man says. The men keep walking down the street, and after a couple of seconds the other man continues: "Sooo... wanna go camping this weekend?"

"I`m not aware of any others, and you`de never get your hands on the rest of the ingredients to make it anyway :)" Such as? I find DDNP to be a moderate difficulty synth. Or perhaps we shouldn't go there.

Oh, haiku thread ownz! Y'all newbs should do haiku too. Go haiku thread go!

"Since Finland in is Europe, i am sure It has its share of great scienctists and mathematicians." Yeah right. No mathematician comes to mind, and the only two persons that received the Nobel prize is F.E. Sillanpää for literature and Artturi I. Virtanen (AIV fodder) for chemistry. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artturi_Ilmari_Virtanen ) He was a professor of biochemistry in Helsinki.

Terbium - One of the four rare earths named after a neverheard town in Sweden called Ytterby! Buy it now - before another idiot does! Damn those Swedes. Sometimes I just... I JUST... WANT TO HUG THEM ALL! Not.
-
We got nothing, since we got only about 25 000 citizens, that might have something to do with it. That's why I'm going to discover or invent something nice. :>

Tervetuloa SFN: ään! Välkommen till SFN! (Welcome to SFN, in Finnish and Swedish )

"i have to make a report on an element. i got the most boring element there is, terbium. i have to make an add like im selling the element and i have no idea what to put because i cant find one intereasting fact on this element. please help" I prefer to think thulium is the most useless and boring element. It's quite expensive, though. Useless & pricy -> I have some.

Experiments to try at home forum...

"it`s all part of the "fun of the search" :)" Fun in the aspect of searching SFN, or fun in the aspect of searching Google and ending up with a crappy experiment (such as insufficient instructions for synthesizing HE-material) and a few blown off limbs? :< -
Time dilation effect on comets and meteors.
Gilded replied to MadScientist's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
"They didn't carbon-date the rock." Didn't they observe how much it was altered by cosmic rays during its journey? Btw, was it rubidium-87 that they observe to date reeeally old stuff like meteorites that come from space, as carbon-dating isn't too reliable after several million years? -
"it`s like being a kid in a candy store :)" It sure is, especially when it comes to pyrochemistry. I like most sciences too. Especially chemistry. And quantum physics, not that I understand too much about it though. And I have a similar thing going on as you do Siientx: I'm not too interested in other subjects than chem or physics. Chemistry is also a marvellous way of annoying people that don't know much about it.

"Just wondering how to collect different isotopes of elements does the element look different or just a different density?" Very, very minimal differences. And I don't think you can see any visual differences. For example, nickel, has 5 isotopes that occur in nature, and you certainly can't tell which is which just by looking at them. This is the reason uranium-235 is so hard to isolate from the 238 isotope. "Also those sites selling atoms of radioactive elements dont seem to exist anymore." Yeah, it seems http://www.elemente.at.cx is no longer functional. Pretty reasonable prices they had... curium would have been nice too. :>

I really don't want to go off-topic even further, BUT I JUST GOT TO, BABY! Sayo, are we talking about Loxosceles reclusa? The fatalaties are really rare in the case of a bite from such spider.
-
"I found a site that sells brown recluse spiders. Pretty ****ing irresponsible." You mean irresponsible in the aspect of them liking human associated environment -> multiplying, spreading?

If jgerlica doesn't want to answer, then you won't probably get an answer.
