  1. "The acidity function of this solution has not been measured, but even a weaker 50% solution is 1,018 times more powerful than concentrated sulphuric acid" The Finnish edition doesn't have that mistake Good to see that the guy who translated the book actually fixed something. "H2Sb2F6" Most likely HF:SbF5
  2. Heh, I remember that there was a parody of those on Conan O'Brien. If only I could measure radioactivity levels with a Jesus statue... *sigh* Guess I'll have to buy both.
  3. Damn, this is like the bloody Euros. First you think they're damn great, and then when you have them you realize they're just... cash.
  4. "But, you can't go to a technical school and ESPECIALLY not a college unless you get you high school diploma." Here it's possible to go to technical school instead of high school, or even attend to both at the same time. College and university require high school diplomas, though. Edit: And btw, we can drop out of school when we're 18, otherwise it's the 9 grades you have to go through.

    GM Foods

I don't know if people should just let all GM vegetables and such be without careful research, but it almost makes me cry when because of Greenpeace (and the like) people in developing countries die, when thousands (if not millions) of lives could be saved with GM rice or such. "Do not eat these, they're bad to Mother Nature! Now, go to your huts and starve to death."
  6. Hmmh? I trust it's the same system in UK/US as it's in Finland; when you finish 9th grade (or the grade you're in when you're 15 or 16), you can completely stop studying anything or continue to high school, technical college or the like.
  7. Hmmh. I don't really know where I should put this, could even put it in the GD, put since it has to do with... err, electronics and gadgets, after about 5 seconds of careful consideration, I put this here. Sooo... I've been going to buy a Geiger counter for a long time, and now I'm thinking which model is the best. It would be used to monitor quite low levels of radiation (operating range from 0.01uSv/h to 1mSv/h maybe). A digital display wouldn't hurt either. I have considered the Inspector-model: http://www.geigercounters.com/SpecInsp.htm (you can even buy a nice piece of software for it ) Any better suggestions?
  8. Crikey! I bet that guy is Australian.
  9. "it will generally be denatured with other nasty things like methanol and whatnot in order to make it undrinkable." Yeah that sucks, for the hobos that is. Btw, it's illegal to use methanol to denaturate ethanol (at least in Finland).
  10. At an Egyptian swimming competition: Commentator: Ok, Imhotep gets a good start... and... WHAT THE?! The water suddenly divides dropping all the contestants to the pool's stone bottom! Moses: Damn! It was an accident, I swear!
  11. If someone has a small piece of a radioactive mineral (to be used as a Geiger counter check), I'd be more than glad to trade it for some gallium or money (if you don't happen to be in a need of gallium ). Before anyone goes "OMG OMG t3rr0r1st!!1" I must state that it is completely legal to possess even quite active mineral specimens for educational purposes, you don't even need a license for it, and low-activity material can be shipped through normal mail, requiring no HazMat or similar costs. Edit: Antique radium clock hands or the like are ok too.
  12. You can always use a themite reaction to take the oxygen from an element oxide. A good (or bad, if you want to look at it that way ) is to extract thorium from thorium oxide (can be found in burnt lantern mantles) with lithium. Don't do it too much, since it starts to get illegal at some point.
  13. "mine also was Nitric acid related (popular chem that stuff!)." Someone probably wanted to nitrate something again. It's a conspiracy! Run for the hills! And load your muskets while you're at it!
  14. Have fun ya'll! Good to see that young people are joining too. I used to be under 18 too... And I still am. Dammit. :<
  15. Damn that Hawk, always skateboarding on people's roofs. Did he pull some tricks?
  16. Hey, what's up with water always dissolving things anyway? I've never really got that. Does it have something to do with attraction between the water molecules and crystal parts, causing the crystal then to break apart?
  17. It would also be interesting to see what Io's insides are made of.
  18. Cost = cash dash
  19. Too bad gardenchem doesn't ship to foreign countries. :<
  20. Hey Ice, weren't you going to do the speech about you going to be a youth ambassador?
  21. You go Phi. After all, this is a jokes section, I found a rather amusing source of Cthulhu-mythos parody comics: http://www.macguff.fr/goomi/unspeakable/home.html Laughed my ass off while reading them. Now, off to buy a new ass -->
  22. bad-mood = me too Waterloo
  23. Europa is a chemist's daydream, sulfuric acid all over the place.
  24. Yeah that £50 thing sucks. I can only imagine what the HazMat and other shipping costs are to Finland.
  25. "hmm, speaking of bismuth, i have a few ounces and i DONT plan on nucleosynthesizing 210 astatine because i actually respect my ability to reproduce." Hey, it's an inexpensive way of self-sterilization. "I wouldn't mindsome, I started the thread so can I have some gallium plz" Damn you gallium-hoggers! You can buy it from RGB, Emovendo, Metallium Inc., Smart Elements... The list goes on. Edit: Oh, here are some crystal making instructions: http://www.theodoregray.com/PeriodicTable/Stories/083.4/index.html
