It's quite nice that you assumed now that you have lost opportunities. Your career is not over because of college. In college, you just have to learn. Joining a research or not, you learned somehow (as your friend said "you're doing well in classes") what was to be learnt. I'm almost sure you've got an urge for opportunities like those you've left behind. And that's the right time. Postgraduating will give you that no matter what happened - or didn't - in college. Focus on what's coming your way and look for what might come. Talk to some of your professors, I'm sure it is going to help. And you didn't waste your life! You're graduating

Hey guys. I'm back to SFN with a very boring issue. I'm doing some pretty nice copper electroplating on stainless steel pieces using a solution containing 250g.L-1 CuSO4.5H2O, 0.05 mol.L-1 H2SO4 and 0.1 g.L-1 SDS. As it is for codeposition of suspended particles, it is desirable to use a dispersant (SDS) and EDTA. I usually use a temperature of 28°C (82ºF) that is mostly related on the articles I've seen, but somehow, when I used a temperature of 50°C (122°F) which is still OK for this kind of electroplating and took the sample to EDS analysis on a SEM, there was a big peak of Cl (15% wt. of the surface). Question is: WHAT THE HELL IS CHLORINE DOING HERE? I don't know if it's about the temperature, but anyhow there shouldn't be any chloride in this solution. Even if there was, how would it be joining the plate? So, I tried using the simplest method around, testing the solution with AgNO3. Ha! So it gave me a precipitate that seemed to be white (though it surely could also be gray). I really thought 'oh it's AgCl then'. I filtrated it and took it to the oven at 600°C (1112°F). Then took it to EDS analysis. And what did I have? Pure METALLIC SILVER! Now I don't really know what to do. What is reducing Ag+ to Ag0? And now, how to explain Cl on the plate? Some informations: 1. Dry acrylic paint, acrylic, stainless steel and carbon electrodes gets to be in contact with the electroplating solution. 2. There are two procedures before the plating (anodic activation and nickel strike), both of them include a solution with HCl but it's impossible that the HCl gets to contaminate the copper plating solution as everything is very washed from a procedure to another. 3. Would the distilled water be contaminated with chloride? Sounds good but still does not explain how there was Ag0 and no AgCl.

I think he means something like an atomic oxygen, I guess it is represented by the symbol [O]. I know some atomic oxygen is released when manganese heptoxide decomposes but I'm not sure if that's what you mean. Don't really think you'd have hydrogen peroxide. It's more probable that you'd obtain O2 when 2 of your atomic oxygens collide or, if you want to think on a collision between H2O (pure, without dissolved O2 or anything else) and [O], then there must be some chance, I don't really know.

This may be a weird topic, but I really wanted to start this discussion as I haven't seen many about it. First, I'd like you to see my dog (Rony): He is simply one of the cutest pets I've ever seen, as he acts friendly and shows some respect to his owners, he loves to be cared of and all that fawning we usually deliver to the dogs. In spite of being very friendly, we always observed he's extremely strong. He is VERY jealous. It was worse before he got 3 years old. When he came to us, he used to destroy anything that we had taken care of in front of him. Specially plants. Only those ones we had taken care of when he was looking at us. So, by the time he was 2 years old, we picked up 2 rabbits, and kept both in a cage inside a locked room (out of home, behind the garden). After some weeks taking care of the rabbits, we noticed he started presenting some uncommon excitement when near to that room we stocked the cage. So that, there was a day, I woke up and found the room forced open, the iron cage totally deformed and truncated, and the dead rabbits open on the floor. After obvious observation, we realized he spent whole night forcing the door (we could see it by the uncountable scratches on the door)... and not enough, he destroyed the iron cage and opened it (not by its door!), cutting the iron. It scared us a lot that time. Another weird behavior was observed when my old dog died (a female German Shephead dog). He got desperated and started crying, and then he tried to wake her up by moving her head, then scratching it, then totally deforming it. As he was trying to wake her up, we thought it was ok, but it made us think he has no idea how strong he is. Well... he still seems to be very sweet and lovely. But after a little search, I found out that the first partial face transplant was done on a patient who had her face mauled by a Labrador Retriever. The patient had taken medicines to sleep... and as the dog tried to wake her up, he destroyed part of her face. Very similar to what happened in my house. Therefore, a 22-years-old woman in my city was bitten on face by her Labrador Retriever and will have to do surgery to repair the damage. Question is: Is it really free of danger keeping a dog at home? Is the risk really worthtaking? Still, I would never abandon my dog, but I can't feel 100% comfortable with all this information.

In Brazil, bumper stickers are very common on cars. Specially Christian and Catholic ones, also referring to politics, brands, and other stuff. Personally, I dislike them. But I see them all the time.

Hello guys I deeply feel I need to introduce myself again. B) When I first signed up SFN, I was 15 years old. Now I'm about to reach 18, so there were so many changes I'm sure I'm not the same. My first contact with science was due to my mother job. She works with microbiology quality control and bacteria identification so that I've always shown some interesting on science topics. It led me to a Chemistry Technician school, know in Brazil as IFRJ (Federal Institute of Science, Education and Technology) which offers High School + Chemistry Tech courses (altogether). So that I started considering Analytical Chemistry such a good friend The reason for that I post here is reaching what's been discussed, being helped, helping and making good friends, of course. So... welcome for those who are coming now, cause my new me is on the loose.

Excelent initiative! If you have previous knowledge on Sciences such as Physics, Chemistry, Math, Biology, etc. you can start reviewing books of your current level. I mean, really studying, getting to understand what's been said. And whenever a doubt comes up, you can post it here so we can help you. After learning new topics, I usually write about what I learned and compare to what's in the books to check what I misunderstood or unfortunately forgot. Hope it serves as a good tip. If you have NO previous knowledge, so you can start from secondary level books and keep improving it. It's always amazing to learn. Like climbing a mountain, appears to be impossible but when you reach the top you'll just laugh and find out you simply didn't reach the top yet. Good luck in your journey!
