  1. Hello lovely people who help us out! Stuck on a couple of bits of my tissues assignment on structure and function of cells/ tissues- if anyone could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it! 2 reasons for muscle cells being long: I've put so they can contract/expand but reason 2- is it simply so they can run the long distances that they need to? (i.e. length of femur or similar) 2 adaptations of compact hard bone (histological structure) with relation to function- 1: bone is dense, so provides strong protection for e.g. brain, but I don't get what number 2 is- something to do with the network of haversian canals? But what is the function of that- storing calcium? Remodelling bone? Also could I have a critique on this answer- it dosen't fill the available space by a few lines and maybe I should add more? The diagram was of the stomach, red blood cells, and muscle, nervous, connective tissue. 1. Use the diagram above to distinguish between the terms cells, tissues, organs and systems Cells are the basic building block of the body. In the diagram above, some red blood cells can be seen. There are many different types of cells in the body with many different functions. Tissues are made up of huge numbers of cells with similar functions that are grouped together to perform a task, in the diagram above we can see muscle tissue, connective tissue, nervous tissue and epithelial tissue which provide movement, structure and a sensory system. An organ is a collection of different types of tissues that come together to perform a specific task, the example above would be the stomach which is made up of the different tissues shown and performs part of the task of digestion. A system is made up of two or more organs and performs a bodily function, for example the stomach is one of the organs in the digestive system which also includes organs such as the intestines, and together they perform the task of digestion. Thanks for any help, this has been doing my head in for ages now!!!! Ben
