  1. I'm searching for how to reflash the modem, but with no luck yet. I'll have to check whether it's vulnerable. Can I reflash the harddrive and BIOS even if I never made an image prior? How about buses? And what's this about persistent driver malware?
  2. ......... Classical conditioning can bring about the most peculiar fetishes. I just accidentally violated my science-only commitment after overdoing the caffeine, but this is it. No more The Lounge for me.
  3. It works because binary, as a base-two system, is based on powers of 2. in base two 1 = 2^0 10 = 2^1 100 = 2^2 ... in base ten 1 = 10^0 10 = 10^1 100 = 10^2 ...
  4. Whoops, I accidentally broke my promise.
  5. How difficult would it be for a common hacker to implement the same malware? Would the reset button remove it?
  6. whoops! Accidentally posted, but whatever. That may depend on the symptoms. Not to go on a tangent, but there is evidence that communication deficits may have various underlying causes. Deficits such as "alogia" and "odd speech" were initially used as indicators of schizophrenia, yet similar symptoms are also present in the autism spectrum conditions (ASCs), which new evidence suggests are diametrically opposed to schizphrenia. Schizophrenia appears to be closer to the mood disorders etiologically. The gist is that different people have different communication deficits for different reasons.
  7. I just read this WIRED article about how malware implanted in the firmware of computer components would be especially persistent. http://www.wired.com/2015/02/nsa-firmware-hacking/ How commonly does malware infect the firmware of computer components or networking devices? How would one go about identifying or eliminating such malware?
  8. Yes, communication or thought transmission. If other animals had equally complex thoughts as we, would they be able to communicate them? Chimps' short-term memory far surpasses ours, so perhaps their working memory does too, which I would posit as an important factor in thought-complexity.
  9. Creativity seemed to evolved gradually, but I think you're wondering why we exhibit creative behaviors with no apparent survival value. Creativity and imitation are more apparent in animals with a higher brain-to-body mass ratio. For example chimps, and especially dolphins. Birds and mammals are endotherms with larger brains, and they also spend more time rearing, in which they show their offspring how to survive. Phi for all is right that we had a lot more free time after the agricultural revolution, but we also have some unique intellectual capacities. So far, no other animal is known to have language (although some speculate that dolphins might). Our capacity for language probably appeared with the FOXP2 gene. Although it's somewhat debatable because self-awareness is difficult to measure, we have a greater capacity to recognize ourselves in mirrors. Not to get too speculative, but it's as if we're imagining ourselves from a third-person perspective, imagining how we appear to others. Machiavellien intelligence, i.e. the capacity for deception and manipulation, is another form of intelligence at which we excel.
  10. There's a "Last Visit" item at the bottom edge of the window! Nobody saw this?
  11. I only trust skeptics, and they've convinced me that you're a liar! I say healthy skeptism should foster further inquiry.
  12. Apologies. Maybe the word "alleles" should be restricted to a one-gene context. Replace it with "genes" or "sequences".
  13. Basically I suppose a "Show More" option would be equally adaptive.
  14. Was my post reckless? All my links were to NIH, unless somebody is MiTMing me.
  15. It probably isn't applicable to very young children, but I'm glad to know it interested somebody.
  16. Psychology isn't my favorite science, but there exists a measure called Borderline Pathology of Childhood (BPC). I know not whether self-harming behavior is part of that measure, nor the measure's relationship to adult borderline.
  17. Several threads at once is okay, but don't let it hog "Recent Topics". Instead put an indicator beside the one displayed thread, perhaps a number, that redirects to the user's "Topics" page. I know so little that I use "Recent Topics" to be quick at the draw instead.
  18. Prophage Induction and Expression of Prophage-Encoded Virulence Factors in Group A Streptococcus Serotype M3 Strain MGAS315 If I understand the abstract, they're induced by hydrogen peroxide and mytomycin C. How do you test for their presence? The paper lists six/seven virulence factors and/or their encoding sequences: SpeA, SpeB, SpeK, SSA, MF4, Sdn, Sla.
  19. If it's multiple genes, maybe investigate the recombination frequency. Alleles on the same chromosome are passed on together, unless there's crossing over between chromatids. Their distance apart is related to the likelihood that they will be separated during a crossing over event, thus it's reflected in the recombination frequency.
  20. I give up. I've never evaluated inequalities between vectors.
  21. I had to look up John's terms, and I'm still uncertain. Maybe he can clarify it for the both of us. In dumby terms, consider the set of all real numbers greater than 2. That set has no least element because 2.01 < 2.1 and 2.001 < 2.01 and 2.0001 < 2.001 and so on, so the real numbers are not wellordered. In an ordered field structure, a set of elements must maintain the same order after they're multiplied by another positive element. Imaginaries violate this rule.
  22. What an embarrassing mistake! I meant: If [math]p^2, 2pq,[/math] and [math]q^2[/math] do not reflect the observed genotype frequencies! Multiply by two for the heterozygous genotype!
  23. I prefer to think of infinity as the absence of a limit, rather than a quantity. This depends on the level of measurement. All quantities on an interval scale are arbitrary. There's still heat at zero Celsius, and 1C only corresponds to an arbitrarily defined difference in heat. On a ratio scale, zero indicates absence. It's even less arbitrary when the thing is countable.
  24. I'm not sure I follow 100%. If [math]p + q = 1[/math] is true but [math]p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1[/math] is false, then one of the Hardy-Weinberg assumptions has been violated. ideal - - actual 0.0484 - - 0.051 0.3432 - - 0.339 0.6084 - - 0.610 They're approximately the same. I wouldn't expect them to ever be exact. Population size is always finite, thus so are number of mate pairings and number of deaths/selections, leaving some room for chance deviation.
  25. Maybe I'm not familiar with the type of hacking you're talking about.
