You have made an interesting point. -
Requirement for two "nows" to grasp the idea of Simultaneity
beecee replied to tar's topic in Relativity
I think what you have missed, is that in fact there is no universal now...your now is not my now, nor the now of my cousin on the planet orbiting Proxima Centauri... You are certainly, definiely 100% wrong re the twins aging differently being nonsense. This fact has been varified amny many times. -
Natural Selection, Unnatural Selection, and the Nature of Consciousness

Ahh, yeah that one for certain. At my many old boys reunions, I whish I had a dollar for everytime someone has said, "yeah but its only a theory" You do need to sleep.😉 In case that "pissing in someone's pocket" phrase is misunderstood, it is Australian slang for https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/piss+in+someone's+pocket piss in someone's pocket piss in (one's) pocket slang To attempt to gain one's favor, affection, attention, or interest, especially through flattering, fawning, or solicitous overtures. Primarily heard in Australia.I'm not just trying to piss in your pocket—you did a really great job!Stop pissing in my pocket. It's not going to help your chances at a promotion. or giving someone literally a nice warm feeling, even if it with urine 😁 -
Length contraction in a block universe must be an illusion
beecee replied to 34student's topic in Relativity
Close enough and understood. ☺️ No, I'm on the side of the fact that all frames of references are as valid as each other. That does not equate to it being an illusion. -

Are you saying he gets back in his ship after biologically aging 50 years and as supported by his on board ship clocks? How much time has passed on Earth? 100 metre train I believe. It seems to me to support the argument that time dilation and length contraction are dependent on one's frame of reference. I can't see a problem. Sorry, I was thinking of another that is also apparently questioning mainstream results. -

SR is simply a subset of GR. GR was formulated in 1916, more the a 100 years ago, and has been tested, and tested again and again, and its prediction keep on keeping on.eg: gravitational waves discoveries. While like all theories it has limitations, at the instant of the BB and the core of BH'S, it is totally valid within its domain. You mention BH's earlier [I think] and while GR does predict BH's, it is not applicable at the core of the hole we chose to label a singularity. A singularity as defined by the failure of GR at that point, not a singularity as defined by infinite spacetime curvature and density, of which most all physicists reject. Which tells me that we have matter/energy there in an unknown state and possibly a surface of sorts -
My previous dog who died a few years ago at the age of 13.5 years.... what I now have..... and My parents bred mini Dachy's and the reason I switched once my best mate passed away.....

Natural Selection, Unnatural Selection, and the Nature of Consciousness
beecee replied to infamouse's topic in Speculations
*puts hand up* And no, I'm not pissing in Phi's pocket, nor anyone elses. While my formal education maybe limited, my common sense and intelligence tells me that those pushing "personal theories", or alternative to mainstream physics, must understand that there is a recognised process to go through. No scientist or anyone else is going to invalidate accepted mainstream evidenced based physics, on a remote science forum. You gather your evidence, the results of your experiments, write up a professional paper for peer review from a professional science orientated orginization, and wait for results. You will also of course need to "run the gauntlet" of critique and the results and general outcomes of your hypothesis, just as any mainstream theory has also needed to do, before it is accepted and becomes mainstream. That's how the scientific method works. Mainstream physics and science is mainstream for a reason. -
Length contraction in a block universe must be an illusion
beecee replied to 34student's topic in Relativity
I already have, here... and I also gave an excellent link by a reputable physicist. If I can add more, while I aint no physicist/scientist, you seem to be using Newtonian in one instance, then GR in another. Not sure if that is allowed. Just as you seem to be the only one questioning the evidenced based aspect of length contraction. -
Length contraction in a block universe must be an illusion
beecee replied to 34student's topic in Relativity
Length contraction [space] and time are interchangeable. Neither are illusions and both depend on one's frame of reference, all of which are as valid as each other. -
And you have been given professional answers. Are you listening, or simply stating your ingrained opinion? You need to calm down. It loses energy because of space expansion. Every Mother sees here new born child as the most beautiful. And I do agree with your thoughts on infinity, other then your error in demanding that space and time are infinite. We do not know that as yet. Not really, and myself as an amateur can say this was one of the first things I learnt. Science, scientific theories are about our best estimations at a given period, based on the observational and experimental evidence available. It is not about proof, although it can be said that the longer scientific theories such as GR stand up to scrutiny and keep making successful predictions, the more certain they do become. Proof is for the mathematicians. A question if I may...what are these logical implications that scientists ignore? OK, granted I am only an amateur, but that sounds [again] like word salad to me. The question of infinity with regards to the universe is unknown. That fact should not be equated to mean anything else then what it means...unknown.

Length contraction in a block universe must be an illusion
beecee replied to 34student's topic in Relativity
The length contraction is real in those circumstances, as there would also be a related dilation with the aspect of time. -

??? How can you have evidence that something does not exist? I'm probably one of the less formally educated on this site, that you sort of inferred in some of your previous posts, but knowing that science and the scientific methodology is what is primarilly responsible for the current knowledge mankind has, I have since my poorly educated phase in leaving school at 15.5 years of age, done a trade apprentiship, and educated myself with reputable reading mainly on astronomy/cosmology. I have also learnt as a great educator once said, that extraordinary claims requires extraordinary evidence. eg: Someone telling me that they have seen a ghost, or an Alien operated UFO, is no where near enough to validate such things. At best, both probably remain as unexplained. Nothing wrong with saying we don't know, but there is plenty wrong in equating unexplained with supernatural. By the way, I have been witness to a UFO, but that's all, unidentified or unknown is what it remains. Most scientists accept that Alien life, off this fart arse little blue orb, "should" exist elsewhere, somewhere, due to the near infinite extent and content of the universe around us, and the stuff of life being everywhere we look. As that same great educator also said, "We were all born in the belly of stars" That makes Aliens separable from your "run of the mill" supernatural examples. You may ask, why is it unscientific [supernatural/paranormal explanations]? The answer to that in my limited education is that it is beyond the laws of physics. The professionals on this forum can correct me if that is wrong. We have no good reason to believe that anything can ever exist beyond the laws of physics.eg: supernatural and paranormal experiences. We have no evidence that pink unicorns do not exist. Does that mean that there is a possibility that they exist? See how silly that becomes? I have no evidence that fairies do not exist at the bottom of your garden.....are you going to tell me that because I have no evidence they don't exist, that therefor they do? My argumentive style may sound unprofessional, and probably is, but that's because I am not a professional, but I dearly hope that I have learnt from professional people both here, other science forums, and based on reputable material that I have read. A great read for you if I may is a book by Professor Lawrence Krass, entitled "A Universe from Nothing" Certainly not as yet classed as accepted scientific knowledge, as we know absolutely nothing about any time before t+10-35th seconds, but it does rely on already accepted scientific principles such as the uncertainty principle and the instability of nothing, or in this case the quantum foam. But he [professor Krauss] accepts that as yet we do not know. -
Not really, and you have things arse up. No one mentioned any overlap between physics/science and philosophy.I said, "Some elements of truth in that, amongst a whole lot of word salad. This is the physics/science section, and any speculative issue about any deity is unscientific at best". And of course your greatest faux pas, or "excuse making" was inferring that because science/physics does not yet know everything, it somehow denigrates it? Science is a discipline in eternal progress, based on new observational and experimental evidence, along with the tried and true scientific methodology and the philosophy that underlies that. And again just to re-enforce another fact, and discussion of supernatural or paranormal nonsense, is just that, nonsense, plus unscientific in its very nature. Hope that helps. There isn't any. I am not a scientist either, but I have read plenty of reputable material. Obviously you have not worked this through perfectly, or perhaps you are hindered by an underlying agenda? which is evident on the block of word salad you presented, with the many errors, some of which have been pointed out.

Length contraction in a block universe must be an illusion
beecee replied to 34student's topic in Relativity
I don't see any contradiction, particularly in light of the irrefutable evidence for the interchangebality of space [length] and time, and as per the link I gave and the explantion in the first post answering your predicament. -
Length contraction in a block universe must be an illusion
beecee replied to 34student's topic in Relativity
The fact that space and time are interchangeable and the evidence is conclusive that time dilation is real, and relative, means that space [length] also is relative. -
Adam and Eve....and of course the talking snake!

Length contraction in a block universe must be an illusion

That seems to be the relevent point to be taken with this question. Each set of measurements or measure of time is as real as each other in any frame, and of course the relationship and interchangeability between space and time. -
Certainly, couldn't agree more! When I say I avoid the freeways in general, I generally mean during peak hours, where [at times] one literally takes his life in his hands. Other times, if I need to drive to a particular destination, or just leasure, I will avoid those hectic, crazy peak hour times when using the freeways. Plus at my age, I prefer to drive nice and sedately, rather then at 110 kms/hr! Just out of interest, in NSW we need to have a full medical questionare filled in and signed by GP along with eye test every 12 months to get a driver's license when one reaches 75 years of age, and at 80 years we must pass a driving test every year.

Some elements of truth in that, amongst a whole lot of word salad. This is the physics/science section, and any speculative issue about any deity is unscientific at best.

All the above interestingly enough happens in its transfer orbit between when it is in LEO and its final destination at L2. No chance of a fix if anything should malfunction. Let's hope no simple error was or is made as happened with the HST!
-
I often avoid the freeway for those same reasons. It sometimes takes longer and I need to put up with traffic lights at intersections etc, but I believe I have a far better chance getting where I am going in one piece.
-
Yep, agreed, and good to see, still though I would rather be talking about some awesome scientific discovery or event.

Good point for sure, as is the speed we actually get news from anywhere in the world as it happens, along with all the ins and outs, contrary opinions etc.... 😊 It may seem as though I'm relishing when arguing in the political forum, but I much prefer science and filling in the gaps in my knowledge. Sure we all desire a life of comfort without wants, and sure many of us fall short of that, while others vastly exceed it. Still, as mentioned in the OP, the bullying by China at this time, has many Australians worried...not me in particular, as I do see things settling down somewhat, when they see that they are not going to achieve what they set out to do...causing Australia economic pain...some certainly, but thankfully we are finding other markets, and of course our relationship and treaties with countries such as the UK, US, Canada, NZ should see their posturings diminsihing in time. On the down side, it appears France is still sulking somewhat from the raw deal we gave them. But they in time, will see that they also have possessions and outposts in the Pacific region like New Caledonia and French Polynesia. With China's success in space, along with its size and military capabilities, it will always need to be considered.

While I certainly have an opinion on what is best for society, some of the arguing, bickering and forceful political points of view, sometimes wants me to throw up my hands, and retire [I already am retired] and become a recluse [no i aint no recluse......yet!] Why cant we all live together in peace, harmony and satisfaction? Why can't we, [those in a position too] help others less fortunate and in dire needs? I have expressed my opinion/s here now often enough for most to understand where I am coming from. I am fortunate health wise, and am reasonably well off. The current issues at this time that have me considering [just slightly though] becoming a recluse is the rise and rise of China, and its associated bullying tactics with its smaller neighbours including Australia. The other concerns the USA and its maniacal fascination with guns, the extremes of society there taking the law into their own hands, and Australia's dumbfucks eagerly copying those ratbags, with our own version of lawlessness. Perhaps Goldie has a point! Do Americans [and us Aussies] need another periods of final frontier stuff...you know, like a return to the Moon, boots on Mars etc. Despite the whinges from William recently [prince William] re his comments we should be concetrating our concerns on Earth, he overlooks the many advantages and improvements that the space endeavour so far has achieved, like satellites and agriculture, and meteorology and many more. Is science the answer to our problems here on Earth? I think so.
