  1. Well, I wasnt refering to you specifically. I am a pyro, and I dont deny it. However, there is a difference between pyrotechnics and explosives. And I only play with fire outside, in a safe area (ie firepit) and with nothing explosive.
  2. Hehe, I like this one: Little Jimmy was a scientist, but now he is no more for what he thought was H2O was H2SO4!
  3. Off topic: Yeah, we seem to be getting quite a few of these type of people lately.... On topic: could you use any potassium salt?
  4. Well...I found out what it was. It was a mixture of carbon disulfide, and carbon tetrachloride. I seriously doubt that i will be able to get a hold of these chemicals. And if I did, I wouldnt touch them with my bare hands. Any idea where i can get these?
  5. Hmm....where can I get cellulose... I think I read somewhere on here that it is just cotton, but Im not positive.
  6. My high school chemistry teacher told me about the different demos she used to do. She doesnt do them anymore because she doesnt trust most of the kids, and because of the ridiculous safety requirements. My teacher trusts me, but she didnt tell me what it was that she used. I started a thread on this subject a while ago, its called "Flash Point". A little off topic, but I dont like some of the new safety thingies...example, using H2O2 to make oxygen instead of KCLO3. H2O2 isnt as fun or exciting as KCLO3
  7. If negative x is what you want, just get an instant ice pack. Its what I use, and it works wonderfully.
  8. Call me crazy, but I like the smell of Sulphur Dioxide. Not a big whiff, mind you, but just a small amount, like when you light a match. I got a big whiff once, and my nose tingled for hours. I also like the smell of ammonia, but again, only a little whiff.
  9. My friend got violently ill from playing with that stuff. I guess he should've had a window open in is room >.> It is also possible to get sick if you heat up a teflon pan to like 500 degrees.
  10. I dont know how pure it is, but i get all of my NH4NO3 from instant ice packs. You can get a good size one for about 2-3 bucks at Walmart. Seems to work pretty well too, atleast for negative X.
  11. I put some Aluminium foil in the solution of zinc sulphate. It has been three days since i did this and there has been no change. Is there something that i need to do to the foil? thanks
  12. Sorry if it has been mentioned above, but Im pretty sure it wasnt. I have a solution of Zinc Sulphate, and I would like to get my zinc out. What could I add to displace the zinc? Thanks
  13. In one of my chemistry books, it says that there were some high quality lighters that didnt have flints or electric thingies to ignite the fuel. There was a platinum ring around the fuel outlet, and when the fuel was released, it would make the fuel ignite.
  14. How can you separate the NaClO3 from the NaCl? Is one more soluble than the other? Thanks
  15. Back on topic, I tried to get some pure ethonol the other day. I took a mixture of gin and vodka, placed into a distilling flask and fitted with a liebig. Didnt take too long to get to boiling temp. When I wafted the distillate, it smelled just like gin/vodka. Did I just distill everything over? Or the ethanol and impurities. Thanks.
  16. Thank for the replies, I'll have to look around the hardware store. YT, i remember hearing about the bunsen burner you made when you were little
  17. allright, i will have to try that....however, I dont want to use a 'big' tank. When I say mini, I mean the little ones, about ten inches high, six inches in diameter. "MAPP" gas and that kind. Whatever, thanks for the replies.
  18. Thats not what I asked. I know where to buy those. What I was asking, basically, is how I could attach the burner to a mini propane tank, cause i dont know about you, but i dont have gas jets in my home.
  19. I dont think that this is the right forum, but I figured that since you have bunsen burners in the chem lab......... Anyways, I was wondering, is there anyway to attach one of those jets that are in the lab onto a mini propane tank? If so, where can i obtain a jet. I cant stand using my alcohol burner anymore, it can barely boil water. Thanks!
  20. Well...my teacher doesnt know what was in the bottom of the beaker. she is positive that it wasnt potassium iodide though. But if she had to guess...she would say impurities in the iodine.
  21. Nope, I watched her the whole time. She got the NH4OH from a locked cupboard, the iodine from the shelf, the apparatuses (apparatusii?) needed, and put me to work. She couldnt remember how to make it, so I had to look it up. I think she said that the last time she made it was in college (52 years ago!). She called them 'Fly crackers'. I'll ask her what it was tommorow when I go to school. I was the only one that did it out of 12 people.
  22. Well...we didnt add that unless it was already in the bottle of NH4OH. BTW this wasnt on the lesson plan, we only did it because i was trying to do it at home. My teacher wanted my curiosity to be satified so we did it in class.
  23. I understand that solid ammonium hydroxide does not exist, but i was wondering. In school, we made NI3, after the iodine had soaked long enough we decanted the NH4OH into a beaker and set it aside. I had offered to clean it up, but the teacher said no. It was left in the fume hood for quite a while, enough for the water to evaporate. There were white crystals in there. So, what could that be?
  24. Wouldnt you just get sulfurous acid, H2SO3, if you used water, and not sulfuric? Thats what my teacher said anyways when I made oxygen and then burned sulfur in it, just add water, and there ya go.
