It speeds up the RAM, ie programs run faster, when there's less stuff in RAM. Sometimes the HD is the best place for things. At least "technically." I dont think it really slows you down that much until you're using a large percentage of it. There are a couple reasons for this, mainly (I think), your CPU has to work harder. I read someware that you can control if certain programs are allowed to use SWAP. or tell it to never use SWAP. The advantage is that programs never go dorment(and thus you dont have to wait half a second after you restore it). Some things do need swap though. Like when you're watching a video. Your video player will use SWAP to buffer (parts of) the media and load it to RAM a few miliseconds before it needs to be played. Mostly though it's pretty useless. I guess having SWAP would allow you to calculate pie to more digets.

No, Sayonara³ is right. I'm telling you, right now, 149 / 512MB is being used as RAM. My swap is 241 (out of a gig). I have like 15 text files open of programming in Kwrite and I'm maximizing them, right now. RAM just jumped to 190. SWAP stayed the same, but this is just because stuff in SWAP doesnt need to be removed (it's just lyign on the HD). After minimizing them RAM went back down to 148. Now I'm going to close ALL of them. The SWAP dropped to 208. Obviously if computers were in the buisness of putting everything it possibly could into RAM it could do that. 208+148 is 356. Instead, by removing stuf from RAM, it speeds everything up . This is why when you restore things after they've been minimized for a while (Firefox, documents...pretty much anything), it'll take a second to load before you can start playign with it. This is because everything on the SWAP is being loaded into RAM. It takes maybe half a second (actually, on Windows it takes forever) but I'm sure you've noticed it before. The time it takes something to become inactive depends on the program. Kwrite does this automatically. You can minimize firefox and leave it for a while before it does it. SWAP and RAM are NOT the same thing. They are NOT interchangeable. Each servs it's own purpose. SWAP is there to speed things up, not to some how store "overflow" when the demand for RAM gets too big. (it jumped after opening ksnapshot)

Sometimes it's better to use the HD instead of RAM. Hense you saying, Just because he has more RAM doesnt mean the page file will be used less.

How do people duplicate items in online games?
1veedo replied to Connor2112's topic in Computer Science
Downlaoding the source wouldn't help you, at all. My account was frozen cause I found a couple flaw in the shop. You could sell something for 1np but trick the user into paying like 50000. After it generates your items, copy the html. In the edit shop front thing, you past the naviagation code (and an align=top) so it hides everything then repost the modified item html. You need to write your own little javascript to say "are you sure you want to buy X for 1np" or the person would see your tricky 50000np cheat (alternatively just make them buy it right then and there, though they mgiht notice it). The great thing is if you go back and put your items up for 1np, the shop wizard will put you up front. It's only the idiot buying your stuff that actually gets tricked. An even easier hack makes users auto-buy some expensive item when they view your shop. That only works on Internet Explorer users, though. The only trick to this is getting the encrypted referer. The site automatically generates that, you just have to document.write in the link. PS: If you want to try this I recommend getting a new account. They'll catch you. -
MindOfChaos if your drivers were in 2.4 you should still be able to use the 2.6 kernel. A lot of drivers have to be downloaded seperate of the basic kernel; it's not like the kernel is just one blob of code. Video cards are a good example of this. If you're using a different distro maybe they decided not to include it. There is the possibility that it's somehow incompatible, though. Google could probably tell you that. PS: *hugs emerge* Seriously, package managers completely blow windows away.

No. I've heard that before but I think that's the way old motherboards wanted you to do it. My old 97 computer used to complain if I had two different sized RAM cards but I updated the BIOS and now it works just fine. I'm not sure why it'd be using more pagefile. Pagefile is the same thing as swap, right? Chances are you're just overreacting. I have 512MB here and it says 173 is being used. 298MB of swap (out of 1G) is being used even though it could easily fit it all in RAM. But pagefile / swap isnt some sort of replacement for RAM. It's not like it's an issue of the HD being slower or anything. Some programs use swap space anyway, reguardless of how much RAM you have. Some programs will also refuse to use swap space. It's just how it's programmed. The kernel wont just move around memory 'cause you have more space now. Chances are your pagefile is the same size because you're still running the same programs.

How high have global tempuratures actually risen? I think it's like 3 degrees sense 1970 or something.

Go to a party... and get drunk, listen to music, and hang out with friends A good BJ always cheers you up. Screw masterbating.

What do you mean by open/closed? FYI a PC is an archetecture, x86. A PC can neither be open source/closed A consol can be an access to a computer that lets you type commands and see the results or it can be a gamming platform (like the ps2) A consol can be EITHER open/closed. WTF are you talking about?

Heh, yeah sometimes it causes headaches.

Socializing and meditating are not "common pleasures" like video games. And being outside, especially in the sun, is beneficial to people with depression.

It keeps rebooting then most likely the motherboard is coroded, grounded (metal screws?)...the circuits are crazy. The kewboard might be malfunctioning and causing short circuits or something. I had a similar problem a while back and had to buy a whole new bare bone. The new computer kicks ass though. http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10777#5

I want to build a website, but I dont want to spend any money
1veedo replied to In My Memory's topic in Computer Science
You could always host your own site. If you dont want Linux then find an old computer someware that isnt used very much. Install apache / php and foward port 80 to the computer. Then use dyndns to get a sub-domain like mybooringessays.blogdns.com -
Exersize makes you feel much better about yourself. Invest in a weight kit. Socialize Play a game Watch comedy or TV If you're tired or stressed, meditate. Do something outside. Ski/Snowboard (whichever you do). Mountain Biking... Help the pigmies in new guiny.

I dont think phproxy logs IPs and requests but my site gets refered by search engines a lot. I thought it was pretty funny that so many looked for "phproxy" so I ran whois on several of the IPs. I expected a couple schools to show up but the majority came from other countries. Just a few, there are too many to run whois for. Iran (Iran make up probably 50%) Saudi Arabia US (schools, a bank, and a few other places) Argentina China Assyria Emirates UK (lol, a school) I think it's pretty cool that people in these countries use my site. The UK isn't (of course) censored but I guess the others are. Just for that I might reopen my "real" proxy server and TOR. Or maybe link to a better server.

This is what I said on what, page one? If you really want a girl, they're everyware. All you're doing is lying to yourself: making up excuses not to go meat more women. "Oh well I dont know who they are." That's why you go meet them ****tard. You're just too big a ***** to talk to the girl standing two lines down in the supermarket -- because they're strangers, because you only want to be friends, because you'll see her tomorow, whatever the excuse is, it's only an excuse.

That's pretty crazy. But I guess it proves 50000 is possible.

You have to love Windows. Every time I read one of those "howto" things I crack up.
-
WinRar (I think it is) is pretty good. I'm sure you can find a bittorrent or a download over p2p. I think it's ironic, though, that the program is an archive ;P It's one of the only programs for windows that will open almost all kinds of archives. Normally windows has no clue waht to do with bz2 and gz files.

I remember making a couple C++ programs that calculated pi. They never really worked past so many digets for some reason.

Most of them are anoying but after meating the "strangers" you might find somebody you end up liking for their "personality." People like you dont get laid. Wake up and change your outlook!

Heh, 100 and even a thousand is a good goal. But 50k? Btw Callipygous you might want to memorize either the 8979 after that or round up the last 5
