mine is, I think, 192.168.2.1 That's where I go to configure my router, etc. All innet addresses, are for some reason, 192.168.2.X. The router holdign the first position. That's probably the default. You could run ifconfig in a shell. I think there is a less comprehensive version for windows called ipconfig, though you can still find the IP in it (i would assume). I know that for wireless connections, software is required (on my router) but anything running acorss ethernet doesnt. Did you read your instructions? The software comes before the hardware comes before the device/driver install. Put in an ethernet card and run a cable to your computer. If it runs faster, then your problem is in your network card install.

Ok, so my site doesn't have very good uptime. And especially recently and in the next couple days...it has been and will be down for hours at a time as i configure the same /mnt.../ to each OS, install some, fix gentoo, and reinstall FC3, FreeBSD. Get each OS to say Operating System: XXX at my site...lots of work on my computer. Anyway. Even when google indexes my site, it still puts me under a couple forums I post at. I know that when I had my domain, 1veedo.com, it was always the very first w/ "1veedo". Is it possible that having bad downtime effects how well google rates you? Or is it just because I have a secondary domain now? I dobt google would rate you on the location of you site. kindof like ad hoc in logic: the location of the material isnt going to effect the quality? Google could at least keep the cache if the site isnt there. But no...it just puts you at the back. Btw, is it possible to link a directery as a root /home/user/ so when you save files there, it goes to the specified location?

interesting problem, can't solve it, help? - LAN

I like pointing out that stuff like this never happens on Linux My suggestion: Ethereal. Find out what's doign what. If it's svchost then it's got a bug so find a clean version. -
I did a powerpoint on why Linux is better then Windows. In it I had this screenshot:(forgive me if thei mage isnt there. I'm doing some major work on my system.) a)boot knoppix (after dloading latest 2.8?) to move around GLOBAL files...so everything is on a partiton called files b) fix gentoo...give it a root password and some users so I can log in! c) install archlinux. Link /home to files d) reinstall FC3, and link everything to /home e) reinstall FreeBSD doing the same thing... f) configure GRUB... and probably some a bunch more that I'm just forgeting about PS: dont harass my friends ;P

Linux would never give you this kidn of fuss. It's possible that svchost itself has a virus (windows has severe security problems). It's probably on your other XP computer, or at the least, this activity between the LAN could be its failing attempts to infect it. It'll just try over and over and over again...adn XP will never debug or tell you a thing! Install eatheral (sp?) and see what you find. You can also check your upstream data transfer to find out if these packets are going out as well. -
Is there software to use your PC as a telephone. NOT VOIP.
1veedo replied to Edward's topic in Computer Science
I know AIM can do that. There are other caht programs as well that work over a LAN. Try google is all I have to say, because I've never actually done any of this before -
I talked to customer service via chat yesterday and got the files I needed. It was the driver upgrade. I got my driver here: http://www.proview.net/static/support/driversutils.html

Quantum entanglement can be used for both communication and storage for quantum computers. http://colossalstorage.net/home_entangled.htm I do not know much about it, but I plan on reading it when I get back from school. The duality occurs where you get polorized entangled atoms. This would allow you to do something to one atom, and the other atom would do the oposite; causign a sort of duality. Not only can it communicate instentaniously, but it can also transfer much mroe data (bandwidth) then a simple electron could. This is how you can store information, and retrieve it w/o breaking the state. I know more about storing the data then I do sending it, however, if it can be done locally (ie, inside a computer), I see know reason why the data off that HD cant be transmited long distances as well.

Is the Global Representation of Windows an Indicator of its Quality?
1veedo replied to Sayonara's topic in Computer Science
There was an entire page of posts between what I was responding to and where we are now. Just a note: It IS cehaper to run Linux then Windows. The article I posted last page clearly shows that it requires less admin to run Linux then Windows. Some of Microsfots marchetign stratagies: Software dependencies. If you write a power point in an older version, it will nto wrok in 98. Microsoft diliberatly did this so users will buy the latest software. Upgrades. Microsoft diliberately ships programs with bugs. They "fix these errors" in the next version. For example, 98 was supposed to be windows 95, but they put in bugs so people would pay twice as much to get waht they wanted. Buying out. Microsopft will enter a field just to bankrupt a company. One example is Inter et Explorer. Netscape was doign pretty good, but then Microsoft introduced a free browser. This browser was not only free, but Microsoft PAID people to use it -- they vigerously advertized it. How was Netscape supposed to make profit and compete with IE?? Software Bundles. Microsofts products are required for the OS to run. Try stoping your MSN client. I dare you. Not to mention that Microsoft has lied to bring this about. As a side note: Microsoft originally lied abotu their newest OS, Longhorn: It will require subscription fees to get updats on Longhorn. Knowing Microsoft, they will intentially leave security holes open. -
Is the Global Representation of Windows an Indicator of its Quality?
1veedo replied to Sayonara's topic in Computer Science
Ok, found it. I rememberd this thing called Tonto or something that generated random names. http://www.dwheeler.com/oss_fs_why.html It has statistics on usage, uptime, security, etc. NASA, and most of the US governemtn runs on Linux. I think this might just be because Windows has problems handing certain amounts of data. Like on 98, if your had a HD larger then 32G, it wouldnt recognise it. Hm... "As discussed earlier, the City of Largo, Florida supports 900 city employees using GNU/Linux, saving about $1 million a year" And it costs more to run Linux? As an actual user, I can tell you it takes about 2 hours to get it configured, and I expect mroe out of my box then most people. Have a web server, need to configure my firewall for bzfs. Running Samba, which can be a pain. (If I restart Samba, Windows, flipin Windows needs to reboot to use the network share!) After youset up your OS, it requires no maintnence at all. I'd like to difer on using "more employees" to run Linux. Linux is actually easier to run, because w/ windows, there are constant security holes being found that admins have to patch up. Not to mention that Windows sucks so bad, you ened 3rd party software to get read of memory leaks, and oter problems common to Windows like freezes. http://www.dwheeler.com/oss_fs_why.html#tco -
Is the Global Representation of Windows an Indicator of its Quality?

I saw statistics for OS use at this guys website once. He wrote a paper in college. According to him, Linux and BSD were the two most commonly used for servers. It was more then half, like around 70% of all servers are not runnign windows or mac. This may be diferent betweeen "coperate network" servers though. I think he meant like game, web, etc servers. I'm goign to find that site again. It's a hard read so I just looked at the tables, which had sources btw. He was arguing that *nix is more popular, though, and for reasons specified in polls. -

1veedo replied to Edward's topic in Computer Science
There probably is. If you're running Linux you could fiddle around w/ your modem settings and see if there's any way to get output...? Ok, maybe not. My mom wanted VOI once and I told her NO! It uses too much bandwidth and utilizes P2P technology, which isn't all that bad for the normal user because they wouldnt recognise any diference in speed (download isn't the problem), I run servers over my connections. I'm actually begining to dobt weather or not you can do this thing with dia-up. You'd probably have to find a special modem that didn't use any input except what you tell it to. If not, you'd probably get a bunch of fuz on the other end. I thought, though, that you could use a dial-up modem of phreaking? I don't know, phone phreaking isn't something I know alot about. Maybe somebody else can help you more. -
If I was the last man on Earth I bet we could do it in public. Hey baby, how 'bout we go to your place and calculate the spring coefficient of your matress? Let's go back to my place and do some research in applied fluid dynamics. ...I was on a role today.

I posted that in a rush. I just preasumed you were talking about sun solaris and glanced at the site. It does appear that they're using Java though. I read in the pdf that they were going to avoid common security holes that comes with java just through the implication. I still dont see how it'll be very fast or small though. Java isnt the best language in the wold for applications. It was made primarily for applets, and made with ease of codding in mind which always invariably cloggs the language. Maybe if they weren't usign standard libraries... The site doesn't really give a very good overview. It seems more like an advertisment for something it isn't complete yet. I think I'm going to look at the floppy though.

Ok, I tried to find a site with a list of cultures that had it, but this is all I could find (except references to "some culturs accepted it."
-
I think you mean Sun Solaris. It's bassed on UnixBSD, just like Linux. And does not use Java to work I've never seen jxos.org before though. If it does use java then it'd be huge and slow.

I've ran into USB problems before; I'm confident we can get this working for you. As root, do this tail -f /var/log/messages Plug in your USB device and post the output. I dont use mandrake, but assuming the same kernel us sued, most of the time anythign that is "proven conpatible" on any distro will work on most of the other ones. Generally people are too lazy to say "I got this working, and this is how" because just about everything that works on windows will work on Linux. The only exception is something liek the iAudio where there is a specific *application* that talks with the software/hardware ON the USB device. Most people dont do that. Take out your manual and see if it requires extra software to work. If it just says like "Install driver" then you're good on linux. And if it has extra software, but that is not required, you're good again. Even so, there are a couple open soruce projects that make "devices like the iAudio" compatible.

I meant Western!! Like, Asia. The very first Sumarian culture saw incest as "normal." So did early China (I think even modern). I'm not sure exactally which, but alot of cultures in Asia accept it.
-
Try using word perfect or open office. I think word perfect bought susi and are now free. Not sure though. But Open Office would definitely be an upgrade from m$ word.
-
It would be awsome if I had that much ram. And HD as well.

In many cultures, including eastern, where intermarige is not only considered normal but is encuraged.

Ok, sense i'm hosting my website from my linux box, and thus no longer have cpanel and all the cool statistics, I'm writting my own data collection script that'll go into my index.php <html><head></head><body>stats test <?php //log $p = "test"; //$p is used in index to load the specified page $browser = $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; $ip = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']; $lt = 1; //$lt = time() - $loaded;, time it took loading //global echo "1"; if(!($hits = implode('', file('hits')))) //load total hits, I'll get to monthly hits later $hits = 1; //in case this script has never been run else $hits++; if(!(implode('', file("time")))) //average laod time $average = $lt; echo"2"; $f1 = fopen("time", "a"); $f2 = fopen("hits", "a"); echo "3"; fwrite ($f2, $hits); echo "4"; $hits--; $newaverage = ($average * $hits + $lt) / ($hits + 1); echo "5"; fwrite ($f1, $newaverage); echo "6"; $f1 = fopen('/log/log.htm', 'a'); //global access log fwrite ($f1, .$ip." got ".$p." using ".$browser." in ".$lt."<br>"); $f2 = fopen('/log/'.$ip, 'a') fwrite ($f2, $p.", ".$browser.", ".$lt.": ".gmdate('l, m-d, G:i')) echo "7"; //$f1 = fopen('/log/'.$ip.".average", 'a')...eventually //for current page stats, same script as global if(!($hits = implode('', file('hits'.$p)))) $hits = 1; else $hits++; if(!(implode('', file("time")))){ $average = $lt;} echo "8"; $f1 = fopen("time".$p, "a"); $f2 = fopen("hits".$p, "a"); echo "9"; fwrite ($f2, $hits); echo "a"; $newaverage = ($average * $hits + $lt) / ($hits + 1); fwrite ($f1, $newaverage); echo "done"; ?> </body> </html> The problem is that not only does it not display all my 123...9adone, it does not write anyhting to a file. The script is currently in /run.php I have no idea what's wrong. On top of that, it's not even done. I need to somehow figure out how to tell what OS my users are running as well as where they were refered from. (I'd also like to get country too, but I figure there's no easy way to find out what nation they're from) Of course, I'll need to eventually exclude my IP from the global statics but that'll come later. So, two things: 1 Script does not run 2 How do I gather users' OS and referal. Oh, sry for not having my script commented. I'll get to that right away.

it worked (past) on XP. Past XP overwriten with Linux. Does not work on other (XP) computer.

Misconceptions about the Big Bang and Expanding Universe
1veedo replied to Pangloss's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
I read the article, learned one thing I didnt used to know, and that gave me another question (In the same Missconception). Pertaining to like, something in the end. I was also going to post my question but I forgot what it was I'll go back and read the last two pages to see if I get the question again -
Everybody is misunderstanding me. I ahve two computers. Both came with Windows. On "mine" I had Civ workign just fine. I later installed linux here. So on the other computer (the one that still has xp), a few months later, I decided to install Civ. This is where the frequency problems are.
