Indeed, if you love programming and all you need to know is that the end product will be a video game then it's a good choice; however it's not a good one if you want to be really involved in design choices or anything like that.
I haven't been disappointed by Microsoft's Security Essentials software; it is a solid product that is compatible, reliable and easy to install and use. I do suggest it to anyone that has purchased Windows and seeks for a "free" anti-virus.
I don't think it's that horrible for a choice; programmers in the video game industry face a lot of challenges and it is a valid field if not one of the best for a programmer to sharpen his/her knowledge and experience.
