1. The phrase public forum springs to mind. If you could try to moderate your self righteous pretentiousness you might not generate so many reactions. Just a thought....
2. Again I seem to have failed to communicate. You have suggested that I wish to halt or obstruct your "further analysis of gravity". I am not asking you why you think this. I am asking you what you think my motivation for this would be. You seem to possess intelligence and an imagination. You also seem to have used these to acquire some peculiar notions. I can address this in a few ways: a) Ignore your views and you. b) Laugh at your views, and at you. c) Seek to convince you of your errors, so that you may apply your intellect and imagination more effectively. b) is destructive to all concerned. a) is viable, but since I have some time I have opted for c). [i assumed you meant planets, not plants, but I am not going past the first sentence of para 2 yet. Gravity is not friction. ]
3. It's a logo, not a scientific dissertation. It conveys a scientific 'feel'. That's appropriate for the site, and that's exactly what logos should do.
4. Approx. the same as the number of stars in the galaxy: 100 billion. http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2002/AniciaNdabahaliye2.shtml

How do you justify 'must'?
6. Number of atoms in the Earth = 1.3 x 10^51. This is reasonably accurate. ["]http://education.jlab.org/qa/mathatom_05.html] Number of stars in the Universe = 1.0 x 10^22. Conservative figure. ["]http://www.thekeyboard.org.uk/Extraterrestrial%20life.htm] Number of stars in the Universe= 7.0 x 10^22. In the 'known Universe'. ["]http://www.ufoindia.org/news_70sextillionstars.htm]
7. And how is the energy to be used? What amount of energy is required? Is cost an issue? etc?
8. A common error: confusing perception and observation.
9. Why would I be mad at you? What is there in my post that suggests I am mad at you? For the record I am not mad at you. I am frustrated by your poor communication skills, but am working my butt of to work around that. Can we get back to a proper discussion please.
10. Come to Britain and view our leading politicians. They don't come much more two dimensional than that.
11. Unless you are a 94 year old man. Now on a serious note related to above. Many people (I suspect most) have a mental image of what age they are that does not relate to their chronological age. I 'think' I am in my mid to late twenties, and have done for thirty years. Thirty years ago it was true. When I am in the company of twenty somethings I 'feel' I am with peers - they see a grumpy old man. So, is it possible that some pedophiles are 'trapped' at a much earlier age in terms of the age they feel they are, so that they are attracted to the 'same' age range? If so, one would have thought the perception could be corrected by therapy. Any ideas?
12. So are you planning on running a control? Same motor type and battery, etc, but no acitive ingredient? See how long that lasts.
13. Exactly. I know its short (certainly way shorter than the grass where I spend most of my round.), but it still has mobility. The individual blades can be pushed closer together by the weight of the ball. That could be just enough to for the effect we are discussing. On practice putting surfaces I have observed the blades spring back after the ball has 'fallen' into the hole. Now, you make a very good point that the greens at Augusta are cut very close - closer for sure than a practice green - but I still think its a plausible explanation.
14. I am going to open with a field I am familiar with: the oil and gas drilling industry. And within that I shall consider only the development of drill bits. Forty years ago these were what are called roller cone bits. Their teeth were milled from steel and coated with a welded hardmetal. Their bearings were unsealed and lubricated by the drilling fluid. They would last perhaps twelve hours before they had to be pulled from the hole and replaced. In that time they would drill between six feet and fifteen hundred feet depending on how soft the rock was. Today an equivalent bit will drill for up to one hundred and fifty hours and as much as six thousand feet through harder formations. Bits without bearings and cutting elements of synthetic diamond can drill for as much as three hundred hours in some applications. The world record for total interval drilled is over twenty thousand feet. If you think oil is pricy at $50 a barrel be glad these developments have occured. Without them the price would be very much higher. These developments have been matched in every aspect of the drilling operations: rig architecture; drive systems; drill pipe technology; cementing techniques; directional drilling; formation evaluation; drilling fluid performance; all of them are almost unrecognisable compared wiith forty years ago. This has enabled the discovery and development of fields that would otherwise be impossible technically, or impractical economically. These are massive advances. They are continuing apace. I suggest that the same kind of advances can be found in almost any industrial sector. I guess if you still dispute that the next stage will be educational for us both.
15. Was it Woody Allen who summarised Freud's theories as "If it's not one thing, it's your mother."?
16. I'm pretty sure I've corrected ed's spelling of Planck before. [ed, if it wasn't you, then 'sorry'. If it was you, 'pay attention'.] It's deja vu all over again.
17. Disease is just a symbiote that hasn't learnt good manners yet.
18. I hate to be the first to break it to you, but almost everybody who thinks, has at sometime pondered the atom/solar system parallel. When you look at it more closely the comparisons break down. I once drafted a short SF story where quantum effects occured on a macroscopic level. It was crap, and fortunately its waveform collapsed on a fire.
19. Steve, I can't get the link to work, either by clicking or copy and paste.
20. Grass is compressible. Fuller explanation provided if required.
21. I was attracted to this thread by the title. (I suppose that's one of its functions.) I was however, hugely disappointed to discover it was an engineering item and not final proof that NASA has been smuggling cocaine into low Earth orbit to sell to pasing UFO's and thus ease the budget shortage. I would argue that the early manned craft were spectacularily reliable [Apollo Thirteen and the 'Fire on the Pad' tragedy apart.] Yes, they pushed the envelope to the limit on more than one occasion, but that's what pioneering is about. I suspect the safety standards have not changed dramtically, but rather that NASA has felt obliged to pretend that space travel is safe. In that respect I agree with you totally - space travel is dangerous. How many people died in the first twenty years of airplane flight? Dozens, scores, hundreds? Until Mt. Everest became virtually a tourist destination in the eighties you had about an equal chance of summiting as dying. That never prevented multiple expeditions each year seeking the goal. Space travel would seem at least as important as climbing Mt Everest, so is a similar risk level not acceptable? Apprently not. Edit: Damn. I just noticed the previous post. Proof that humour (or lack of it) is Universal.
22. This post from another ocean current thread may help. http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showpost.php?p=146094&postcount=16 Douglas has accurately noted some other influences on ocean currents. An important one is density. I think (and this is just an educated guess - I have not checked it) the dense cold water from the melting Greenland ice cap moves south (since there isn't really anywhere else to go) until it bludgeons into the warmer northward flowing current. Have you tried googling ["Labarador current" origins]?
23. A google search for "how to make a nuclear bomb" turned up 2,590 items. Several of these were book reviews of published texts on the matter that may be of use to you. The following link is not what you are looking for, but it appealed to my sense of humour. [For example - "You may wish to keep the substance (plutonium) in a lead box if you can find one in your local junk yard, but an old coffee can will do nicely."] http://winn.com/bs/atombomb.html
