  1. You also said volume = constant times mass energy = constant times mass. I would add wages = constant times hours worked It's a common form. I'm not sure what you are asking..,,,,,,,
  2. because I can transform mass into energy and vice versa
  3. Very detailed simulations have been carried out on this hypothethis that place constraints on the size, velocity and angle of attack of the object. After impact only 10% of the ejected mass actually remains in orbit to form the moon. The rest heads of into the beyond. A substantial portion of the ejected mass is from the mantle, which is why the moon is quite light and probably why we have plate tectonics.
  4. There had to be an original post. Some believe it was created by an unknown, perhaps unknowable, omniscient force or entity, whom they call the Webmaster. They argue that structured, cogent intelligent posts cannot spring into existence from nothing without a guiding intelligence. They cite evidence that angels or agents of this entity, whom some call moderators, walk amongst us. (Detractors say these are simply ordinary humans with inflated egos.) The alternative view is that posts do not arise from nothing in one step. Random mixes of letters form into syllables, then words, phrases and sentences. Finally complete posts come into existence. This evolutionary process works because the meaningless posts fall by the wayside. (Some point to posts by Artorius as evidence of this.) Which of these explanations is valid? Personally I favour a third option - panthreadia. I believe that other Forums exist 'out there' and these original posts come from them.
  5. Right. That makes sense now. Many of us forget what the original post is/was. We see a key word and launch into an exposition of our agenda.. (Did I mention panspermia, and Steady State yet?) Personally I greatly regret that we don't have tails - prehensile of course. They would be especially valuable in today's world: 1. Hold the phone and type on keyboard at same time.. 2.. Summon lift and open door with hands full 3. Scratch back easily 4. Extend range of options during recreational sex 5. Increase range of body language for improved communication 6. Eliminate discussions about vestigial ones
  6. I woud say all three of these statements are valid. mass and energy are the same thing mass and energy are two aspects of the same thing mass and energy are two different things It depends upon context, perspective and purpose..
  7. That's a different question really. It depends whether or not you think there are lots of Earth like planets in our own galaxy (with life forms). I subscribe to the Rare Earth hypothesis. Universe teeming with microbes, but intelligent life even rarer than it is inside government.
  8. Dhawal, I hope you found something useful in there, though I suspect other sites might be more relevant. I had a host of self learning science sites but lost them in a hard drive crash. If I can locate any I'll post here.. MAS: The ACT site lets you order their preparation book, but its not free. They do have some practice test questions though. http://www.actstudent.org/index.html This site may be a carrot to draw you into paying for courses, but it does have a free tutorial. http://www.number2.com/exams/act/index.cfm?s=0 This may be similar http://www.powerprep.com/actlabs.htm I feel I may just be showing you stuff you have already rejected as unsatisfactory. I took the three above from the first ten hits of 890,000 of a this google query. http://aolsearch.aol.co.uk/web?query=ACT++college+preparation&location=wholeweb&isinit=true&submit.x=23&submit.y=13
  9. If I could answer that I would know why the tortoise doesn't beat the hare..
  10. The same as everything nearby does 'today', if Big Bang cosmology is correct.
  11. You are missing out. http://digital.library.upenn.edu/books/ http://www.bartleby.com/ http://www.bibliomania.com/ http://www.gutenberg.org/ http://www.nap.edu/ http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=Books http://www.ams.org/online_bks/online-books-web.html etc. Many are old, but not all. Treasure troves.
  12. My sister has her internal organs reversed: heart on right side, etc. Many of us are born with abnormalities that may not be obvious. I hope all works out for your cousin's child. The odds are that they will..
  13. There we differ.
  14. I'm uncertain.
  15. Off the top of my head - benefits of having a large moon - no particular order. Diverting some incoming bolides (comets or asteroids) as you suggested Stabilisation of axial tilt: critical to relatively stable climates Creation of large tides: more than double what we would get from the sun alone. Tides may have been instrumental in fostering the move of plants and animals onto land. Here are two for Intelligent Design devotees: Nicely sized to provide spectacular solar eclipses. Conveniently close to provide a first step into space And it's nice to look at.
  16. That saved me the bother. Thanks. Living about a hundred miles from the loch I felt I should respond. Hellbender, the attitude of most Scots, in Scotland, is that this is a splendid way of easing a few more tourist dollars out of the pockets of the gullible. We like the idea that there is a monster, but few really believe in it.
  17. I would want to not contest it from both standpoints. Whether I had the moral fortitude to take that route I don't know. If a jury found me not guilty I would be physically free, but I would still carry the knowledge of what I had done. That is a price I would have been aware of when I made the original decision to torture the individual for information. My underlying theme is that we are responsible for our actions (and inactions) and should not hide behind ends justify means type arguments.
  18. Sigh... Please read my post 44. There is evidence. It may not be conclusive, but it is there. http://news-info.wustl.edu/FEC/1999/neanderthal.html deCODE Genetics, Iceland, have identified an inversion on gene 17 that is found in 20% of Europeans, is rare in Africans and almost absent in Asians. Women with the inversion have 3.5% more children than those without. [Nature Genetics, DOI: 10.1038/ng1508]. The inversion is dated to around 3,000,000 years ago. Since it provides an advantage it should have spread widely. Perhaps the inversion is associated with a disadvantage that outweighs the fertility advantage. An alternative explanation is interbreeding with another species. (Summarised from New Scientist, 22 January 2005, page 9)
  19. Portugal. Coastal cave. Hominid remains with mixed sapiens and neanderthalis features. According to some. And not to others.. ...Need to google.
  20. I meant would some variant of epicycles have worked well enough for us to navigate spacecraft around the system. If 'yes', then Demosthenes original question can be answered as 'yes, we can still, for practical purposes imagine the sun goes round the Earth'. Or would the attempt at inter-planetary navigation finally have shown the fallacies in the Earth-centred view?
  21. I'm glad we got that resolved......
  22. I think not - well, not exactly. It is the act of opening the box and observing the contents which collapse the associated waveforms. I'm with ed84c on this, however, the cat can collapse its own waveform through self observation. I've discussed this with my own cat and she assures me she would notice if she were dead! (Did Schroedinger choose a cat rather than a dog or rabbit because of their nine lives? This would allow the experiment to be repeated several times with the same cat.)
  23. But he had been silent since August till he began reposting on 11th January, so he was new to us.2u and I. Jakiri, a hypothetical question. If we had advanced technologically to where we are today, but had retained our Ptolemaic, earth centred view, would we have been able to have conducted the feats of space navigation that we have? I am presuming that without Copernicus shifting the centre to the sun we would not have had Kepler's insights and Newton would have failed to develop a theory of gravity. Could we still have established a mechanical description of orbital paths, replete with epicycles upon epicycles?
