  1. It was discovered in June. The orbital data are based on 176 observations. Although that seems a lot, they are all in a half year period only, which must limit accuracy.
  2. I play piano like I post: intermittently, inconsistently, with much improvisation, no discernible skill, flashes of humour, and considerable passion.
  3. Thought for the year: the Universe isn't getting larger, our imaginations are getting smaller.
  4. Are you suggesting that the pattern of quakes allowed prediction that a large quake in a populated area was imminent? That would be quite a leap to make. Who should have phoned who? The USGS conveniently makes the data available for everyone who wants to consider it. The problem lies in interpretation.
  5. You don't seem to have fully defined the problem. I shall assume it is resting motionless on a flat surface. The point about which it will rotate would surely depend upon the magnitude of the force, the mass of the rod and the co-efficients of static and dynamic friction?
  6. Approaching Opinion Warning: The old military aphorism that we prepare to fight, through development of technology, tactics and strategy, the last war, not the war we must actually face, seems to be applicable to much of human endeavour. Humans, for the most part, are a short-sighted species. Those who do gaze into the future, and there identify dangers, are generally condemned as dreamers, tree-huggers, fools, liberals, doomsayers, idealists, panic-mongers, or any other label that allows them, and their views, to be ignored. An improved warning system will be put in place. It will save lifes in the future. Meanwhile, complacent in our own Western comfort, we will ignore the less spectacular river of death that flows through our planet on a daily basis. Annually millions will die from dirty water, poor sanitation, malnutrition, inadequate shelter, non-existent medicines, absent medical support. So, sad as this event is, I shall reserve the bulk of my concerns for the less dramatic, yet insidious happenings that gnaw away at humanity, and for the more dramatic events whose reality is disputed (e.g. global warming), or improbable (e.g. bolide impact). If you disagree with this viewpoint, just remember I’m a dreaming, tree-hugging, foolish, liberal, doomsaying, idealistic, panic-monger, and can therefore be disregarded.
  7. If the English language permits monokini it should permit multiple universes!!!
  8. First, welcome. Second, become, or always were?
  9. Only !!!! I'm not superstitious' date=' but the 13th. 2029 -->2+0+2+9=13 [i']April is the cruellest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land [/i] T.S.Elliot Edit: And it's a Friday!
  10. Artorius, are you a "Polar reversals are cataclysmic" school, or "Polar reversals are interesting, but non-threatening", or, "I have no earthly idea what the effects of a polar reversal would be"?
  11. Spend an afternoon imagining you are in your hand, not your head and you'll see what reverse is getting at.
  12. Sayonara, you were right. Pretty good so far.
  13. I am in complete agreement with you here. However, if male dominated industries were welcoming to women the cultural changes needed to accomodate children could be achieved more smoothly. As long as that will be difficult to achieve.
  14. Do you think they will have a) DNA with the same bases as Earth life. b) DNA with different bases c) Something other than DNA What conclusion would you draw from each?
  15. I don't know if you plan to revisit the board for reactions to your post. I hope so. A lot of what you said resonated with me, but not all. I'd like to discuss some of your points, if you are interested. The conclusions you reached in the first three sections seem to me causes for hope rather than despair. For if some can reach these conclusions, then eventually all can, and then act accordingly. Progress is painful and slow, but it is progress. We can all make a contribution, we all should make a contribution. As you say we are all connected.
  16. Don't know. Don't want to know. The possibility that it might work is the only thing that persaudes me to get into lifts (aka elevators).
  17. How long does it take?
  18. Hey, at least you misspelt all three. That's equality. Happy times to you and yours and to all posters.
  19. I meant years or decades, as you wish. I am unaware of any significant change in volcanic activity over this period. The earthquake links leads to many other sites that woulld confirm the same observation for earthquakes. I was asking if you suspected there was an increase based upon anecdotal or upon quantatative evidence. If the former I believe it to be misleading. If the latter, could you provide it.
  20. Playmaker, When someone posts a comment such as, “As a final point it would be amusing to see how females would cope with the manual work”, I suspect one of the following will likely be true: The poster is talking tongue in cheek. Or, The poster is part of the reason, or should I say problem, that has led to a dearth of females in many industries and trades. My response, “Hmmm.. You don't think that might be something to do with the hiring policy of a male dominated industry do you? Nooooo, surely not.” addresses both of these possibilities. If the former, it may be seen as light hearted acknowledgement of the tongue in cheek remark. If the latter, it conveys my distaste for such an outdated attitude. I have worked in two male dominated industries: oil exploration and construction. I have witnessed the attitudes and actions, overt and covert, formal and informal, managerial and shop floor, that make these industries unattractive to female employees. Dismissive comments such as yours will discourage all but the most committed females from serious consideration of work in the construction industry. The few who do join encounter the attitude behind such comments on a daily basis, from colleagues, bosses and subordinates. Is it any wonder that many leave and advise younger friends or relatives “not for you”. That is why, as you say, at the "collage[sic] recruitment centres the vast vast majority of applicants are male". So, I make no apologies for attacking an outmoded mindset which I view with contempt. I find it interesting that you have chosen to criticise my style rather than the substance of my post. You may console yourself with the thought that I “have no idea what I am talking about” and that I “feel the need to send sarcastic responses to try and get a rise out of people”. Clearly, it has nothing to do with a passionate belief in fair play.
  21. Thanks, Artorius. I do. That's why asked Nave why he thought there was an increase in activity. I was going to post that link along with this one on earthquakes, which I am sure you also have. http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/
  22. To YT and JaKiri We are in danger of losing the Christmas spirit. Peace to you both.
  23. Strange weather - global warming. Please tell me what increase there has been in volcanic activity. Pole reversal has been the subject of several threads that you may find interesting: http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7372&highlight=pole+reversal http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4343&highlight=pole+reversal http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7597&highlight=pole+reversal
