Bollocks! In the world at large the majority of people when they call someone ignorant intend it as an insult. If there is any failure to read intention, then it is on your part for being (apparently) unaware of this. Since I have got away with it for years, on this and other forums, we may deduce that forum mod/admin teams believe it is acceptable to insult those people who deserve it. That seems nicely on topic with the thread's title.

Yes, the option to leave when one feels that concerns are not properly recognised and addressed, where transparency is not what it could be, is a real option. One wonders how many potentially valuable members we may have lost as a consequence. Members to whom the remark "if you don't like it you can leave" was not even addressed.

However, many people will perceive an accusation of ignorance as an insult. At least some members will use the term to insult, while avoiding moderation by claiming it is simply an objective observation.

Brand new to the Forum/Lordy! Glad I found you! Refining Silver
Ophiolite replied to pontif's topic in Applied Chemistry
I cannot help on the processing, but I like your work. (And you can absolutely trust arc with the gold and silver. I've been saying that for years - ever since he gave me a 15% cut.) -
Noted and acknowledged. I might add: 1. Typically is not as good as always. 2. Doing a good job for no material reward is not as good as doing a great job for no material reward. 3. It is possible to value the work of the mod/admin team and still wish it to be better. 4. Just because the OP is a prat, any actions in regard to his posts should attend to the perception of lurkers, not just the reaction of the prat. 5. It's the old saw, "Justice must not simply be done, but should be seen to be done." 6. As much as he is a prat, he isn't half as bad as tkadm30!

Slightly off-topic, but remaining on the subject of ship loss, I find that most people are unaware of the number of ships lost on a regular basis. These attract less attention than air-crashes, since most of the vessels are cargo ships. Not many of us travel routinely by cargo ship. Illustrative of the issue is this on-line Guardian article from 2015, "Large ship losses at lowest rate in decade, report shows". And that new low rate, for 2014? "Only 75 went down at sea during 2014 but losing bigger ships could could cost (up to) $1bn each." The article also notes, "Between 2004 and 2014, 1,271 ships have been lost."

A point that may be worth reflecting on is this: if a long term member of this forum and one time moderator can feel that some actions are precipitate, how may those actions appear to new members, or those who find themselves moderated? Transparency is probably more important than balance.

Experimentally-induced mental thoughts amplification
Ophiolite replied to tkadm30's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
Observations: 1. The author of this thread finds writing grammatical English challenging. 2. This is exacerbated by the almost exclusive use of meaningless verbiage. 3. His claims appear nonsensical. 4. Requests for evidence are ignored. 5. Requests for clarification are ignored. Conclusion: Further discussion is pointless. Recommendation: Shut the fool down before he injures himself. -

You do realise word salad and evidence are two different concepts? -
Experimentally-induced mental thoughts amplification

Esoteric concatenation of inchoate terminology in an effusive exposition of lexical cornucopia with the innate intentionated goal of perspicacious deliberation is, perhaps, a malfeasance too far. -
You appear to be confusing hypocrisy with incompletely specified rules and guidelines. As others have noted certain intentions are implied, or require a full reading of rules and guidelines. Could the word "anything", which forms an important element in your argument, have been better chosen? Almost certainly. Would the intention be clear to most people? Probably. Is your position on this that of an argumentative prat? Apparently.

I don't know. I thought defeat only occurred after you give up. I've lost many times, but I've yet to be defeated.

I'll let you know when I have the experience.

Do you think classification systems are real or artificial?

Which would hinge upon two factors: 1. Establishment of extra-terrestrial colonies that become isolated. 2. Deliberate large scale gene manipulation.

While AIs will be capable of arguing the case for Young Earth Creationism, I don't think any of them will be willing to take the job. -

Congratulations Tahir. You have made the Opening Post appear like an inspiring work of well researched science. If you are smart enough to know you will be made fun of, you are smart enough to know you are speaking nonsense. Stop it.

All of the above, as per the poll choices. Probability Theory and Statistics if one had to pick only one, since it encourages and facilitates critical thinking and objective analysis of all subjects. (Or add Geology, since all those trained in geology are known to be exceptionally knowledgeable and unbelievably humble.)

I think you may agree with me that it is more than important. It is essential. If one does not follow that route then one is not entitled to call oneself a scientist.

You do not appear to understand what a conspiracy theory is.

Worrying about posting my pictures online...is this normal???
Ophiolite replied to james_pain's topic in The Lounge
So much to say and yet so little time, what with alternately laughing and crying. James_Pain, here are some of my thoughts: 1. As several people have pointed out to you, if you are concerned about your photographs being misused then do not post them online, anywhere. 2. If you feel you must post them, then ensure they are accessible only to those you have granted access to. 3. Take a long hard look at what motivates you to want to post these pictures in the first place. It soulnds unhealthy to me. 4. You very sweetly explained to String Junky what Photoshop was, since being an old guy he might not know what it was. That would be insulting it if it wasn't so amusing. I believe I am around the same age, or somewhat older than SJ. I was probably using Photoshop before you were born and was writing software decades before that. 5. The very fact that it is so easy to manipulate photographs means that anyone with their brain in gear knows to disregard such nonsense. 6. Stop worrying, be sensible, get on with enjoying life. -
Interesting. I might well make the same distinction, yet I would reverse the word usage.
