Biofuels, wasteful and counterproductive?
Aardvark replied to Aardvark's topic in Ecology and the Environment
That's an interesting idea. Esp the bit about stuffing the stories down the politicians throats, hope they don't choke -
Here are a couple of the relevant quotes. Mark 8:39 to 9:1 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power Matthew 16:28 there shall be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom As unambigious as the NT gets really. Some of the people listening to him would still be alive when the last judgement happens.

I've never seen these report cards are they a legal requirement? From personal experience i had a summer job in a well known pizza place and the first duty of the day was brushing the bettles out of the dough mixer and the pans used to the pizza bases to rise. Several times i needed to sweep the floor with a brush to clear away the beetles, they thrived there so well. And this place passed its government inspection.

What is with this that girls lying they have never had boyfriend?
Aardvark replied to ps2huang's topic in The Lounge
I think you would probably find it more fufilling to date a girl who is a bit older, maybe 18 or 19. She will be more emotionally and intellectually mature so helping to give you a more meaninful relationship. A girl of 15 will be too young for either of you to seriously know what the longterm potential for your relationship could be. Instead you would be spending time with a child and hoping that when she develops, she develops into someone you would like to have a serious relationship with. Rather than taking the risk of making such a big commitment to someone too young for either of you to be sure about your relationship it would be better to date someone who is more mature. I think you would both find that much more fulfilling and natural. -
Biofuels, wasteful and counterproductive?
Aardvark replied to Aardvark's topic in Ecology and the Environment
I've a depressing feeling that you may have correctly diagnosed the problem. Any suggestions as to the cure? As long as politicians can buy votes and give prefential treatment to favoured special interest groups then the misapplication and misapproriation of funds, effort and research seems inevitable. Why is it so hard to hold these people accountable? Would strict campaign financing regulations help? Or must voters take the effort to become more aware, active and better informed? (don't hold your breath) Or do we simply have to accept that we live in a rotten world and accept it? -

Biofuels, wasteful and counterproductive?
Aardvark replied to Aardvark's topic in Ecology and the Environment
Part of the reason i started this thread was because i want to be convinced that biofuels really do have a future. Can anyone give any valid reasons for why it isn't just a big exercise in political patronage? I want to be wrong on this one. -
Biofuels, wasteful and counterproductive?
Aardvark replied to Aardvark's topic in Ecology and the Environment
The subsidy ends up mainly with the farmers and some big agri-businesses. The oil and gas companies don't get that money which is one good thing about his i suppose. The study looked at all the energy required to produce the biofuel, not just the fossil fuel inputs. It remains that biofuel uses more energy to be created than it contains. This might (just) be acceptable if it was a method of converting solar or wind power to a liquid fuel source, but the biofuel production is mainly produced in a strictly conventional manner with conventional fuels. I'm still guessing that $3 billion a year could be seriously prodctively spent of real alternative fuel research. This system seems to be an example of 'porkbarrelling' that is particularly bad. -
Biofuels, wasteful and counterproductive?
Aardvark replied to Aardvark's topic in Ecology and the Environment
That might be a possibility in the future as technology develops but no one involved with the development of biofuels seems to be making that point which does leave me rather dubious. It's not a question of using fossil fuels to produce biofuels as such, rather, that it costs more fuel to produce the new fuel. Even if a non-fossil fuel was used in all stages of the production of biofuel the simple equation would still be, more fuel in than out. From a very brief prerusing of the subject it seems that the majority of interest in developing these biofuels is based on political expediency. Farmers get taxpayers money, politicians get their votes and can pretend to be doing something 'green'. I'm pretty sure that $3 billion a year could go quite a long way in genuine research into alternative fuel sources. Or is science so well endowed that $3 billion here or there wouldn't make any real difference? -
A recent study by Cornell University and Berkeley has shown that turning crops such as maize into fuel takes up more fuel than it produces. http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/July05/ethanol.toocostly.ssl.html The US government is spending more than $3 billion a year subsidising these fuels and policiticians on both sides are loudly calling for more money. Is this a case of bad science and bad economics in the cause of political expediency or do biofuels have a real future?

Why don't you mention to her that in the Bible Jesus says that some of the people in the crowd listening to him will still be alive to witness the end of the world. I wonder what she will make of that? Maybe there are immortal vampires amoungst us! Don't put a stake through their hearts, it might provoke the end of the world!

Coquina, presumably your husband was aware of what he was doing to himself. He could see it on his own body and messages about healthy lifestyles are ubquitous. As such how was it that he could become so over weight and refuse to take action? What is the mental process there, is it denial? Did he perhaps think that he was so over weight that nothing could be done or did he make a conscious decision to enjoy fattening foods and a sedentary lifestyle at the expense of his health? When you decided to get into shape did you get any specialist advice? Was it difficult, someone once called overeating an addiction as difficult to break as a cocaine addiction so i imagine you must have a fair dose of will power. What sort of support did you receive from people and was it helpful?

Green tea with Jasmine flower petals is very delicate and refreshing. And probably a bit better for you than tea with syrups added.

Absolutely correct. Now would all Jews, homosexuals, Gipsies and political dissidents please report to the 'resettlement' camps. Nothing bad will happen because you can always trust your government.

Ah yes, just had one, quite refreshing in this awful climate, but i still prefer a good hot mug of char.

What methodology did she use to make such a calculation? And how does the knowledge of the impending end of the world affect her? Humans are odd.

Von Neumann probes may be cause of origin of life
Aardvark replied to cambrian_exp's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
The extinction of the dinosaurs opened up the ecological niches which allowed the evolution of species such as homo sapiens. Without that extinction event it is unlikely intelligence as we know it ,and thus civilisation, would have developed. This seems to disprove the idea that a 'beserker' probe or some such variant was responsible for the dinosaurs extinction. -
It would be difficult for a government to censor the internet even if it wanted to. It would only be possible by very heavy handed methods which would be hard to justify esp as so much bomb making information is already in the public domain.

It is true that obesity won't generally kill before the individual is old enough to have reproduced, but obesity may affect the individuals chances of attracting a mate. This could act as a selective pressure upon the genetic traits associated with obesity.
