could well be......it is very strange, but the fact that it's me so i know it's genuine combined with the fact that people much more intelligent that me think its possible has really got me thinking. say there is something going on, something much bigger than us, and only 1 person every thousand years gets it, maybe its humanitys chance to do something with it , perhaps there is something we are missing. Who knows perhaps 100 years from now they will study it

I can understand your point of view and respect it entirely, But in order for it to be right, my brain would have to be playing tricks on me in a sense, and still wouldn't explain how i can tell exactly whats going to happen when one of these moments occurs. Now dont get me wrong this is rare, when it does happen as i said it is short lived and happens for anything up to around 10 seconds. when you say it like that as "you dreamed the future" it seems highly unlikely, it just occurred to me that even though i am 100% genuine here even if someone else said it i would be skeptical but i really have nothing to gain by lying, And am honestly looking for some valuable input. cladking, Your definition of deja vu at the end there would have technically been true although much different from mine. i would just like to say im not religious in any way, I don't make this deja,vu thing a big part of my life, I don't even pay attention to it or tell many people unless it comes up in conversation. I also have a dog, and frequently see him chasing things in his sleep, making noises and even running after them etc, So i know what you mean, However it is much different, I don't remember the dreams at all until the moment of deja vu has passed. i could have had 10 last night for all i know. Chances are i didn't though seeing as how un-frequent they are, look iv seen a load of bullshit posts in my time, this honestly isn't one, i don't know if there is a scientific explanation , well available to us at the moment. i was looking at it in a more philosophical way. I am interested in helping myself with this, So please take what im saying as real, and tell me what you think i should do from here. I dont try and predict anything, I wouldn't call it a prediction , its just literally i'l see something, a color an animal a person anything and it'l set it in motion il get a slight feeling of i know whats going to happen next and literally a couple seconds after that i am back to normal. when it happens i can Literally know things no one else would, I once told my mum that a pot was going to fall of a shelf because i had the dream. I am not insane, Im far from it. if you can predict what will happen then it isn't your brain out of sequence. if anything it could be the universe out of sequence which allows my brain to skip a second or 2 as the universe "lags" maybe. it might not be something so big as a cosmological plan which is highly unlikely, i just have no idea what.

So i Was recently reading a thread on here titled real dreams asking if 2 people have the same dream at the same time is it real. Well it lead me to comment about my experiences with deja vu, and im wondering if there is something more to it than has ever been researched or thought of scientifically. First il explain about my experiences. I am sure you all know that every human has dreams every night that we don't remember, Some stick with us until we reach consciousness but that is a very small percentage. (not to say that a dream that had a powerful effect on you mentally would be forgotten. Hence nightmares ) Now that's what happens to me, Il have a dream, and not be able to remember it until part of it comes true. Il have a dream and not remember it, and it could be months and months later, I'l see something that triggers it, and it'l all come flooding back to me,I will then say " Iv seen this before" and for anything upto 10 seconds il know what's going to happen next everything from speech to physical actions. It is not necessarily a major event that this happens for, quite usually it's something daft and pointless. So i started doing some basic research, And what I've come up with certainly intrigues a second look or at least some input from someone in my opinion. It turns out that your subconscious in your brain stores facts and memory's that you have completely forgotten, and until someone reminds you of them or you see something that directly relates to the memory in your subconscious the information is lost forever. This is how your brain only uses a certain percentage of your brain (Part of the reason Not a full explanation) if you remembered everything the chances are your brain couldn't cope with the strain, so it has a a sort of memory bank where it stores ideas until they are needed , which is when you are reminded or think of them and the idea is plucked out of there. Now that must be where the dreams go in my opinion, and If i have had these deja vu moments for years since i was young, there must be a reason how it keeps happening. And if my brain could somehow predict minor segments of the future, This in my opinion must imply that there is some sort of cosmic plan, i cant quite grasp this idea yet, But if the future is predictable, it must be somehow written or there must be some sort of reason that things that have not happened yet are seen prior to it happening, Not via the eyes but via the brain when it goes into a deep sleep. I have genuinely been having these sequences of deja vu since i was very young, i have never had an instance yet where i have seen something bad happen and managed to save someone; or seen the lottery numbers before they were drawn (One of my mum's favorite answers when i told her about it years ago) But a fascinating part of it is that i could go somewhere i have never been before and still get the deja vu from a dream that i had years ago, Which means the place wasn't in my subconscious already as i had never been there or seen photos of it ever. Yet i just get that feeling of iv seen this all before and know someone is about to walk round a corner wearing all black, or il know a certain color car is about to drive down the street . it's always different things. I would really be interested to see what anyone thinks of this and welcome all input
-
My guess would be it's something to do with brainwaves or telekinesis in some way. Something we havn't discovered yet. I Mean i regularly have dreams that i dont remember. Then In real life, Il see something happen , and know whats going to happen next, The longest period this has happened for is about 10 seconds after I get the deja vu and say "Iv'e seen this before" . It's weird because it all comes back to me then, And i can remember that it was a dream. So if anyone can explain how my dreams which are something completely fiction, can see the future, or things that haven't happened yet. . Im all ears.

Time Chance Rationality - Behavioral Science Experiment
SomethingToPonder replied to LiteHacker's topic in Experiments
I Chose to take the gamble and go for the four, I also chose that most people would do the same, And the reason why is that, If people dont know when they are going to die, Then they aren't losing anything by taking the risk to try and win 4 years of life, So if they win Great, thats 4 years of life, But if they lose they are in the same place as before they rolled the dice. -
I can refute your cycles of time theory though, Lets say that time was looping, Choices we make are predetermined. Even if we think we are making a choice, It has already been predetermined. This would not make sense. There would be absolutely no point in human existence no point in anything, who would benefit from this? who would be able to make time cycle? because naturally that does not occur. You could challenge me to do something or say something right now, and because i am a different person from you entirely , if time cycled we could technically all be in different timelines and everything's just in your head. or we'r on an artificial simulation. It's highly highly unlikely. if you do the math it can be proven highly improbable but it's much harder in words.

Are humans limiting progress in science?
SomethingToPonder replied to Villain's topic in General Philosophy
I doubt that it could even happen. Science is always about building on other's ideas,There are of course new ideas all the time, But more than often people build adjust or correct an idea that's already been put forward. And When you combine people together, Who knows what their Iq would be, An Iq Is not an exact measure of intelligence and im sure some people with average Iqs could come up with some valuable input to many things. There are people with iq's of over 200. But most inventions you see came from people with Iqs not that high. together we can do anything even if we dont know it you are working with someone if you advance on their ideas. We can never get to a rate where we have invented everything or learned everything we possibly could, The idea is fundamentally flawed. It goes against the laws of nature. -
is this world better off without humans?
SomethingToPonder replied to leugi's topic in General Philosophy
No i definitely think we belong here. Without us the world wouldn't be much. But i was thinking, What if we are the aliens? We as a human society always presume that alien races will have superior technology etc, So How come, their are multiple species of animals, Yet Us humans are all the same except color of skin. There are many many types of animals that have no technology and would look at us as an alien race with superior flight and weapons tech. anybody got any input? -
I dont agree with it as a whole. Though i think that in todays age it is all blown out of proportion. If aliens were to come to the planet earth , I doubt they would look at us differently or choose a "superior" race to contact, due to a religion or color of skin. My bet is they would look at us as being primitive for even having things that would separate our race into segments and that cause a huge amount of the worlds problems. Although In the time we live in now, Some religions are possibly holding some countries in the past, islam being one of the top of my head. The fact that people are still getting arrested for kissing in public is a good starting point. I mean maybe some people just dont like the culture, not necessarily the race. i personally am not the biggest fan, But respect people's right to choice. Do you think that 1 maybe 2 hundred years from now we'l all be one big mixed race of humans, Due to people having mixed race babies? maybe even 500 years but same principle, Then we will all just be humans.

You can Never have too much knowledge. Never. No matter what power sources or particles we find ,we invent or create, Someone will be able to turn it into a weapon in some way. That doesn't mean that We should stop trying to advance our research into those fields. Even if there was some sort of knowledge that would be "Too extreme" for us to learn, where humanity should maybe say enough is enough we should walk away, You are making a big choice that might not only change the existence of our race 100 years down the line maybe a 1000, Imagine that that discovery would have taken us into a new age. But also we would be making a statement that it's not alright to learn, That we are not worthy to learn what the universe has to offer. We'r also saying that About everyone, not just some people. Everyone. And i doubt there would be a referendum on whether or not we would look into it. But i mean do we really want the question to be out there of what would have happened? What is this mysterious technology and what power could it harness? how could it affect our civilization? I think that just the question alone would be enough for humanity to start research. You can never get too much knowledge.

Need Some Help From The Experienced
SomethingToPonder replied to SomethingToPonder's topic in The Lounge
Thanks for everything, It is a passion of mine and has interested me for years. It's just something that im into if you know what i mean. Thanks for the heads up about the research careers, I have heard how hard it is to get a job, But i suppose im going to need to at least try or i'l live the rest of my life wondering what if i had studied and stuck in at it and gotten a great job maybe even made some breakthroughs. Im going to have to try, without a doubt. Thank you everyone for all your help =) -
Is the world a dystopia without you?
SomethingToPonder replied to dstebbins's topic in General Philosophy
Well it depends. I think it could be true. It all depends on the person and what that persons actions are. It's down to chaos theory, which simplified is the butterfly effect. Anything you do can set of a chain reaction of events that could still be happening 20 years from when you performed the action. Something so small, for arguments sake , i drop something down my sink. This has set off a series of events that Will shape my life and many other peoples here's how. I drop something down the sink -- The drain Gets clogged -- I phone a plumber to fix it -- The plumber falls hits his head on my stairs which have a chip in them -- he dies or is seriously injured -- I have to deal with all the police investigations -- His family have no way of an income as the man has allways been the main breadwinner in their house -- His child grows up in poverty and falls in with the wrong crowd -- His wife forced to make money any way she can to feed the family And so on. This is just an example but you can see how anything you do could have massive consequences. If everyone lived their lives thinking about it we would all be insane. We live in a world with over 6billion humans who each everyday make major and minor choices which have a major chain reaction of events. And to the OP, The episode of the rugrats sounds like that the producers are trying to teach children that you need to stand up for other kids and not just go along with the crowd also that if you know something is wrong to voice your opinion. I think thats good skills for kids to learn -
Humanity and why we have hope.
SomethingToPonder replied to too-open-minded's topic in General Philosophy
We do have hope. but the human race as a whole needs to start looking to the future. We are slow to gradually develop because not everyone in the world is a "good citizen" now by good citizen i dont mean someone who never breaks the law. I know many people with their degrees in law who enjoy a spliff at the end of the day instead of a pint. it dosn't mean that they are criminals. By Good citizen i mean people who Want to further us as a race. Society always has people that are not going to contribute anything to advancing the human race. It is my belief that we should be aiming our young people into scientific jobs at the moment, Not every single young person will follow the educational path , which is normal so you will still have the people to do the jobs that Needs done. but all the while we should be focusing on the future. The government is so focused on making money and extorting it's own citizens that it puts that in front of further advancing us. we could have massive amount of technology if they decided that That was our priorities. Our priorities at the moment are money. Which is useless because although it makes our civilization function, It's value is assigned by us, at the end of the day its just paper and metal that we have given a value too.. without sounding communist if we were to dedicate some people to jobs such as farming, sewage etc and gave them housing free for their work or something along the lines. not 100% sure what though and we Scrapped money. The whole human race works together, all the worlds resources pooled into one, Used for what matters. There is no need for money as everyone has what they need. Technology is free for us you dont need to pay, now people would say that this couldn't possibly work because industrys require money to function, but not if all the workers get anything they need free. any human gets what they need free, and we use all the worlds resources to further ourselves. if aliens came to earth tomorrow, they would not look at us humans as different colours they would look at us as a human race who dont work together and are split and divided by countries religions and much much more. -
Could plasma one day be used for actual guns?
SomethingToPonder replied to dstebbins's topic in Engineering
They have a plasma laser at the moment , But it is quite a big thing. The actual laser can shoot through things no problem. but in order to even get it to work it requires a massive amount of energy which small arms would not be able to produce. But they are working on it believe it or not. I think it may be possible but laser guns as such, Not in our lifetime. -
First of all, never speak to the guy again. Even if he "changed" it sounds like someone you should steer well clear off, Anyone who lies is just a pain to be honest. Definetly go and see a doctor no matter what because if it was a poisoning then by the fifth day it could be irreversible. i dont think it sounds like a poisoning because nothing else has happened to you but get it checked to be safe and Stay the hell away from the guy.

Warp Speed In Our Lifetime Possible!
SomethingToPonder replied to SomethingToPonder's topic in Science News
Ahh i see, Yes the need for the exotic matter seems to be the thing that we would struggle with most, But as i said if you had told Thomas Edison when he invented the first electric light bulb that you could then advance electricity into televisions mobile phones and thousands of other items, he would have had no clue. we just need a starting point, From there we can advance anything we create. -
Warp Speed In Our Lifetime Possible!
SomethingToPonder replied to SomethingToPonder's topic in Science News
Sorry, I didn't realise it was a multiple posting and someone had already started a thread the same, wont happen again. I think this is a stepping stone to warp speed and that it is genuinely possible. When the pc or mac was first invented it wasn't the same as it is now, It was a generation behind. if we can get even the most basic of drives that didn't work, we could advance it once we have the simplest idea. That's what the human race is all about. here's hoping ! -
Need Some Help From The Experienced
SomethingToPonder replied to SomethingToPonder's topic in The Lounge
Hi all and thanks for replying. well to start with, if im going into a career I would be of course hoping to one day be working at the highest level. As far as being a technician in a high school or uni goes to helpout, i wouldn't really be interested unless it was a stepping stone to some sort of acknowledgement that would possibly be as good as a qualification or something along the lines. just to make it clear, I really have no qualifications, but would be willing to re-sit the tests for exams in college etc in order to even get into a course.I do not think it is possible to just walk in and say hey iv got no qualifications but im willing to learn, of course not. I am hoping for a realistic sort of approach to it all from the very beggining and was hoping someone may be able to help me "map out " the education programs roughly in which i would be aiming for in order. I live in the UK so the courses may be different from those in america. just for some advice to help anyone who may be willing to help me "map out" the courses. . I would ultimately be aiming to get to the highest level of work possible. ( i realise this could be done many ways) . I have little qualifications so assume that i have practically nothing, So courses from college upwards the most basic possibly. Just so that i have the Qualifications/degrees. .I do have the intelligence to make it. (i Hope) i realise that the people on here are much more experienced in the field however than most people at the companies that help you with courses and education. I look forward to your help. Thank you. Too open minded, nice video. You are correct, Follow your passion eventually you WILL get your shot. if you stick at it and you know what your aiming for you will get where you want to be. we dont have have fafsa here but we have something similar. Il look into it thank you. Again, This is appreciated. -
I Noticed this article when it was first published probably a lot like many of you On the site. It states that warp speed may well be not just possible but practical in our lifetime , also that the paper itself was written 10+ years ago, and was just not possible at the time, but Now due to technological advances it may well be possible. One of the most interesting things is it is still possible while not breaking the laws of physics and even parts of the theory of relativity. . Just google - when will warp speed be possible, you'l notice that all the press releases were over the same 2 days. heres a few links to get you started. http://www.complex.com/tech/2012/09/nasa-scientists-say-warp-speed-may-be-possible http://techland.time.com/2012/09/19/nasa-actually-working-on-faster-than-light-warp-drive/ http://gizmodo.com/5942634/nasa-starts-development-of-real-life-star-trek-warp-drive there are many other stories and leads out there on the subject, But if this is true, Does everyone not agree that This is what we need to be investing money into.

The Universe expanding at the speed of light?
SomethingToPonder replied to Strattos's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
So also if intelligent aliens were looking at us from around 46 billion light years away then would we not presume they would be seeing us in the past due to the amount of time it takes for our light to reach them? they would be seeing a non advanced civilization maybe even iron age or something. depends though they might have more advanced telescope technology which filters out the "time through visual" effect -
why is nasa more important than feeding starving people?
SomethingToPonder replied to dragonstar57's topic in The Lounge
funding for nasa should be increased not cut. It's unbelievable that in Times like this when so many impending Crisis's are upon us apparently that we are not funding more space program research. Humanitarian aid is important, but throwing money at the problem does not make it go away, CLEARLY! i mean how many billions of pounds in the last 10 years have been sent to africa and apart from a few wells and villages (slight exaggeration) there is not much difference. The country is still as far behind us as it was. Now dont get me wrong, I believe that saving people's lives is important. But when you stop trying to advance the human race and stop aiming for the stars literally then you are setting of a chain reaction that will not end well. Bank bailouts jesus here we go again, How much money will be swallowed into the black hole of banking? it is such a shame to see all that money being thrown at country's banks only to make no difference whatsoever, It took greece 3 bailouts for instance before they even started recovering. We need to be focused on getting to the next stage of space exploration no matter what. Not throwing money at countrys who will never throw any contributions to anything back and expect more money. -
Hi all And thanks for reading my post, Im really new to the site so please excuse any mistakes. I am really interested in studying experimental physics or astrophysics, I also enjoy chemistry a lot. now here's my problem, When i was at school i never did very well. I have an above average IQ not that it matters much, and am intelligent on many levels But in mainstream education i never progressed really. I went my own way with learning to be honest and have done 3 college courses on varied subjects starting when i was 14. ( i left school really early) Money isn't an issue much at the moment as far as a job goes and things as i am trading online very successfully at the moment. However it just isn't the field i want to get into. I want to get a job in one of the above mentioned type areas of physics, But first i completely understand there is a Lot of studying to be done first and i am 100% willing to learn. No one i know has been of much help to me in this area so im hoping maybe a couple of experienced people in the field on here could give me a few pointers and i would be very appreciative. I do like to have everything planned out as best as i can before starting so as much information as possible would be appreciated. where should i start? Can anyone tell me what courses i should be starting with at college level , Then what i should be progressing to etc. I am very very keen and hold basic knowledge of most things and subjects and can demonstrate this in person, However qualifications are a problem. Thanks in advance everyone
