Mean Mary!

Bullwinkle is an alien! No really, UFOs are are a subject of considerable or at least questionable debate. Before we really go down this road we should decide how much evidence would be required to justify a scientific study. Some studies have been done but to say they were highly questionable is putting it mildly. To a great extent the USAF is directly responsible for this area of study to be questionable and ridiculed by the scientific community. How ever the main or most famous study "The Condon Report" has been poked full of holes the often touted reason for this was the total lack of scientific rigor applied and the assumption from the beginning there was nothing to the phenomena. The truth of the matter is still an unknown and may always be unknown but there are sighting that suffer from an absolute embarrassment of data that still have no probable explanation. The most unusual case for me is the 1952 Washington, DC "merry go round" case. Many independent witnesses both military and civilian saw the phenomena as did multiple radars both civilian and military. Still there are people on both sides who say the other is wrong or exaggerated. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robertson_Panel https://www.gaia.com/article/1952-washington-dc-ufo-incident-explained https://science.howstuffworks.com/space/aliens-ufos/ufo-government5.htm The 1952 Washington sighting suffers from both sides cherry picking the data to support their case. There are people in the scientific community that have supported the need for study and even supported the ET hypothesis. I think the entire phenomena is interesting if for no other reason the "modern mythology" aspects and the "me too" phenomena people seem to ascribe to. But to say it is all bunk or that aliens are definitely visiting us cannot be supported in any meaningful way. On the other hand no really scientific study has ever been done and the studies that have been done were by people or groups with an axe to grind on both sides of the issue.

Fossils in Wrong Places
Moontanman replied to Simbabones's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Didn't I just say that? You are of course correct some dinosaur bones have been found in younger starta than they should be but that could be caused by erosion washing fossil bones out of the old strata and laying them down in newer strata... -
An unknown source of planetary energy?
Moontanman replied to Moreno's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Radioactive decay would appear to be the main source of heat on Plunto https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluto Some sources do suggest gravitational flexing as at least part of the source of Pluto's heat. https://www.plutorules.com/page-78-wobble.html -
Fossils in Wrong Places
Moontanman replied to Simbabones's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
This is something I am intensely interested in and it is true that an out of place fossil could put into question current understanding it would have to be something quite impossible like a rabbit in the Cambrian era or something similar. As far as I know no such thing has ever been found. I would ask your friend for a citation, I would enjoy looking into any evidence that has been found that is out of place in this manner... -
Debunking Some Wrong Assumptions About Aliens
Moontanman replied to BahadirArici's topic in Speculations
I agree. I agree. The problem with the speed transmission of information, speed of light, would isolate us quite well. It's highly doubtful that we could even detect a civilization equal to our own around the nearest star. Even the most optimistic estimates limit any knowledge of us further away that 120 light years or so. This is a tiny fraction of even our own galaxy. If they are aware of us this is a reasonable assumption but not a sure thing... I happen to support the idea that any aliens would not be the "super beings" of fiction, just in possession of better technology. I see no reason to assume anything about aliens as far as good or bad, we also have no reason to assume that technology is unlimited. I could very well be that we are about to run into a wall of limits of technology. It is quite true that we do not possess anything they couldn't get easier from anywhere in the universe. The Earth is in no way in possession of anything valuable enough to merit a visit much less invasion.. We only have one data point, it's impossible to draw curve with one data point. Singularity is something asserted but not proven and I see no reason to assume anything about aliens much less that AI has taken over or will take over them or us... -
Yes, if most of them are to be believed...

Because most religions define god as all good and omnipotent not to mention all good and loving..

The bravest daredevil on the planet Earth!

Again why does this make it ok and not a contradiction to what you seem to indicate these religious texts are part of? If they are instructions from God why didn't he just say things like slavery, genocide, rape, pillage, war and others were just wrong instead of not just allowing them but demanding them? These very contradictions that are excused so easily by believers is why i cannot be one anymore...
-
And that makes it ok how exactly? God should not only have known better he should have done better, much better. The only thing I can honestly say about god or gods is that that he/she/they ignore everyone equally,...

I was thinking the same thing, not sure why but I did get it from google+

Lets try one more time... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-InjaAPgxh7s/WpRCy98MI5I/AAAAAAACpQw/ypyNJwDP8Mc7zt_tmpTisqfKWbiAK0hVgCJoC/w795-h998-n-rw/9a9de2a0d77274ce30486cee4431b04a.jpg I must be doing something wrong somehow...

I know you don't, that is the sad part...

Damn dude, it's a book written by humans who had an agenda, an agenda 2500 years dead at least, from kill anyone who works on the sabbath to a world wide flood the entire text is fiction and often written to allow horribly twisted crimes against other humans to be justified...

WOW! Raider, just WOW!

The golden rule in one form or another predates modern abrahamic religions by quite a margin. Quite the contrary, who gets to decide the context? You, me, Joel Olstein. the pedophile pastor down the street? It's so vague as to be meaningless...

As you can see by interpretation, I take it at face value. I see no reason to interpret something like this in anyway but what it says. I can take anything and put a positive or negative spin on it. The place where he is quoted as not washing hands can be interpreted to mean he had no idea about microbes being dangerous or the necessity of washing hands to prevent disease. you or I can spin anything, that is the main weakness of religious faith... The fact that it is said to require interpretation lends religion to be easily used for whatever purpose the interpreter intends...

Well lets see, hinduism most certainly contradicts Islam and Christianity just to name a couple... Citation needed for this, I would like to see evidence of this commonality..

This is a good point but it also applies to nuclear weapons, some are worse that others but all are bad for anyone who is near ground zero. If you lack morality it's not due to a lack of belief in a god or religion you lack empathy. The problem I see here is that no one is trying to convince me wonder woman is real and trying to use guilt and shame not to mention eternal torture to make me worship wonder woman... Again, there is a rather large difference between known fictional stories describing the human condition and edicts from an all powerful god that threatens you with various punishments if you change or even doubt these stories. Sarcasm? All of them are false? Care to back that up? If even one is correct then it's quite problematic to the idea of the god of the bible at the very least. This one is problematic: I am more than willing to go through all of these one at a time... Faith is the worst way to know anything. I can have faith in Cthulhu or aliens from Sirius but that faith has no bearing on the reality of the situation... Obviously one could be correct out of the thousands of gods and or religions created by man, but how probable is it? They all cannot be correct but they all certainly can be wrong. The important question is how do you objectively know which one is real assuming one could be?

I guess this would depend on how you view contradictions but a great number are listed here, I would like to know how you can say there are no contradictions after reading this... http://www.thethinkingatheist.com/page/bible-contradictions So God came down to Earth and was born of a virgin and then sacrificed himself to himself to atone for the crime of a man and woman who ate a fruit he allowed Satan to troll them into eating and they had no idea about why they shouldn't eat it? People most often cry out "shit" just before impact, an expletive at that point is simply what we do. Some people might be that way, religion doesn't seem to be a factor one way or another. He created us that way yet he can't have anything to do with us? Again with the sacrifice of himself to himself for breaking rules he created for people who have no way of knowing the rules? Whose love Scott? the same being that creates evil? http://biblehub.com/isaiah/45-7.htm

Life on other planets; is water really the primary factor?
Moontanman replied to dstebbins's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Actually low temps will slow down chemical reactions, this is a known quantity. I was just trying to be careful about what I was asserting since we don't know if these more reactive molecules can form replicating analogs to what we currently know. There is no reason to assert they cannot but it is still an unknown. Water is indeed the only data point we have in solvents for life although there are bacteria that live in oil they still need intracellular water. And yes some ideas about looking for life in liquid methane have been proposed from cell structures to the size and chemical respiration of those cells. https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2017/nasa-finds-moon-of-saturn-has-chemical-that-could-form-membranes https://www.nasa.gov/topics/solarsystem/features/titan20100603.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2017/12/21/nasa-funds-helicopter-mission-hunt-alien-life-titan/
