Of course the evangelicals have Ken Ham, 70 some odd million dollars for a pretend ark theme park, no way that money couldn't be better spent on the poor and helping feed hungry children... Noooo lets build a theme park... to me that is evil as well...

Wasn't it Conan who said that? The fact that the christian religion allowed and even demanded things like the burning of witches and the killing of all who didn't follow the correct dogma, even other christians, and supported those who committed those crimes in the name of god doesn't really bode well for our game of cherry picking. Religious violence was at least partly responsible for the framers of the Constitutions wanting a separation of church and state. So many major and minor wars based on nothing but interpretation of dogma until religion was gelded during the enlightenment... I think I'll pick cherries from my side any day. Even those rulers who aspired to the highest ethical standards were often not particularly nice when they dealt with those they thought didn't... In fact I would assert that the worst of the lot were those with the highest "church approved" moral standards. The Christian Church you see today is a shadow of it's former self when it had real power of life and death over all who disagreed. Yeah, I'll pick cherries from my side any day over your side on this one. I am sorry to hear you are having problems Jimmy, very sorry to hear about your son, please accept my heart felt condolences. My health has been pretty bad in recent years as well, I can't imagine having to deal with both my health problems and a death of a child. Please feel free to talk if you need a sounding board... I am quite sure that religion was twisted by men to achieve their end goals but the fact it can be so easily twisted is a strike against it from the get go...

Some people just aren't wrapped tight... Just imagine what would be possible in a ten bar atmosphere! -
Just in case everyone missed this post I'll bump it up a bit, it really lifted my skirt to read about this, it brings the possibility of exolife up at least a degree of magnitude!

This true but with the Sun significantly cooler back then... Something like 30% less when the Sun first lit up!

We have done so little real investigation of life other than the Earth I am still optimistic. I think NASA missions should be more of a hunt for life than they currently are. Checking out the geysers on Enceladus would be high on my list of priorities... The Curiosity rover is not checking for life, in fact none of our current space craft are looking for life in our solar system..

I've been trying to use this large chunk of jellied tissue between my ears and the idea of liquid water on Mars isn't adding up. "They" say that in the distant past Mars had a more Earth like environment and liquid water but "they" also say the sun was dimmer way back when as well. That only compounds the problem of liquid water... Just how dense an atmosphere would Mars have had to have under a dimmer Sun to support liquid water and oceans and rivers? I have an alternative opinion... I think Mars was once covered by ice, under the ice water flowed and created the land forms we see today that look reminiscent of river alluvial fans and such but these things never happened on a Mars under the open sky! The ice sublimed and was lost to space over time leaving the marks of flowing water we see today! We do see these things in arctic regions on the Earth today! http://rspa.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/471/2176/20140907 What say you?

I honestly cannot justify carrying a gun around public, ajb I wonder why we are not seeing reports "good guy with a gun" screwing up? Cherry picking certainly has something to do with it. Endy, I am not familiar with the internet cafe' thing at all. John, how would you accomplish your goal of zero guns? Walk around house to house tearing them apart to find guns? What is ideally done and what can actually be done are often two different beasts. Do you know of any societies that have no guns? Does that always equate to no robberies? sensei makes a good point, I wonder how long this guy had been looking forward to his intervention in a crime? I have no desire to be a part of a crime on either side... I honestly think this video is far from a good guy with a gun, he breaks both laws and my personal moral code if not his. The "GGWAG" was really lucky in many ways. He went up against inexperienced juveniles, they were evidently not willing to "hold their ground" and it looked to me like one of them had a shotgun. In a shot gun vs hand gun the shot gun would get my support.. All of my gun toting buddies are going nuts over this BTW..

I thought he looked kinda funny, gun range explains it though...

You guys are correct, not my day, i thought I'd put a question mark in the title... I am really not on top of it today...
-
Even a blind pig finds that occasional acorn, I wonder how often people are robbed in public where a gun toting civilian does nothing but make the situation worse? I was watching a movie last night, some western where of course everyone had a gun and the bad guys are always defeated by a good guy with a gun... i wonder how much this particular image contributes to the meme of good guy with a gun? The old west wasn't quite as well armed as people are being led to believe, even there guns in town were often forbidden. The video almost looks contrived to me as well, not to mention the "good guy with a gun" continues to shoot at the robbers even though they are doing nothing but trying to get away. Lots of problems with that little video, yet it is being passed back and forth as though it is a righteous act of some sort. I am thinking the old guy broke the law or would have if he'd been in my state, if i understand gun laws at all... At some point the whole good guy with a gun thing will have to be addressed. Since when do we discuss what others have to say on other forums instead of the topic it's self?

I am sorry I missed the replies to my post in this thread, fires were indeed thought to have been a problem at the time of oxygen maximum. Also anaerobic organisms did indeed have problems when atmospheric began to rise. I am not sure why a higher oxygen level would be a problem for oxygen using organisms unicellular or multicellular. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosphere_of_Earth https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carboniferous Are you trying to say that the death of this scientist had something to do with the pacific ocean? With Fukushima? The amount of radiation released by Fukushima is killing plankton? You have me confused, you do realise that orders of magnitude more radiation was released by atomic bomb tests in the 20th century right?

I am not proposing anything, I am suggesting discussion, I see no reason to discuss what is in the answer section of the thread rather than the thread it's self. if you want to discuss the pulse night club shooting i would suggest you start your own thread to do so... I simply wanted to see what people thought about this incident..
-
Why is the comments relevant? It wasn't a night club...
-
Should be a question mark after the word gun in the topic line, sorry guys, I wasn't paying attention... Not sure where to post this, I'll post it by it's self. But it looks a good guy with a gun made a difference... https://www.facebook.com/anonews.co/videos/1251420218202868/

They do live up to their name!

Such bullshit, did you read it or let someone else tell you what it said? The slave for only 7 years thing only applied to jewish slaves for everyone else it wasn't voluntary or limited by time. In fact the Bibles the slaves are property can can be passe down to your children. Not to mention you could beat them as much as you wanted as long as they didn't die in two or three days from the beating... Sharia law pretty much follow biblical law...

Yes this was before MTV! Damn what happened to music? At least she didn't have to be naked riding a wrecking ball!

Is there anything wrong with being seen eating alone in a restaurant?
Moontanman replied to Mr Rayon's topic in Ethics
Eating alone is only a problem if you don't like to be alone, I don't mind being by myself, i am damn good company... -

Stone Cold Dude! Recent papers and empirical data suggests that the possibility of habitable planets has expanded greatly, out to 10 AU around Sol like stars... So many terrestrial class planets have been found in this area around other stars alien life is beginning to look more likely than ever. Of course there are a hand full of UFO sightings that have a rather high strangeness, How about that granpa?

Not a very good one either...

Possibly they should be more aware of what is possible with modern technology instead of trying to make ancient technology work... https://www.technologyreview.com/s/540991/meltdown-proof-nuclear-reactors-get-a-safety-check-in-europe/
