You guys are correct, not my day, i thought I'd put a question mark in the title... I am really not on top of it today...

Even a blind pig finds that occasional acorn, I wonder how often people are robbed in public where a gun toting civilian does nothing but make the situation worse? I was watching a movie last night, some western where of course everyone had a gun and the bad guys are always defeated by a good guy with a gun... i wonder how much this particular image contributes to the meme of good guy with a gun? The old west wasn't quite as well armed as people are being led to believe, even there guns in town were often forbidden. The video almost looks contrived to me as well, not to mention the "good guy with a gun" continues to shoot at the robbers even though they are doing nothing but trying to get away. Lots of problems with that little video, yet it is being passed back and forth as though it is a righteous act of some sort. I am thinking the old guy broke the law or would have if he'd been in my state, if i understand gun laws at all... At some point the whole good guy with a gun thing will have to be addressed. Since when do we discuss what others have to say on other forums instead of the topic it's self?

I am sorry I missed the replies to my post in this thread, fires were indeed thought to have been a problem at the time of oxygen maximum. Also anaerobic organisms did indeed have problems when atmospheric began to rise. I am not sure why a higher oxygen level would be a problem for oxygen using organisms unicellular or multicellular. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosphere_of_Earth https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carboniferous Are you trying to say that the death of this scientist had something to do with the pacific ocean? With Fukushima? The amount of radiation released by Fukushima is killing plankton? You have me confused, you do realise that orders of magnitude more radiation was released by atomic bomb tests in the 20th century right?

I am not proposing anything, I am suggesting discussion, I see no reason to discuss what is in the answer section of the thread rather than the thread it's self. if you want to discuss the pulse night club shooting i would suggest you start your own thread to do so... I simply wanted to see what people thought about this incident..
-
Why is the comments relevant? It wasn't a night club...

Should be a question mark after the word gun in the topic line, sorry guys, I wasn't paying attention... Not sure where to post this, I'll post it by it's self. But it looks a good guy with a gun made a difference... https://www.facebook.com/anonews.co/videos/1251420218202868/

Such bullshit, did you read it or let someone else tell you what it said? The slave for only 7 years thing only applied to jewish slaves for everyone else it wasn't voluntary or limited by time. In fact the Bibles the slaves are property can can be passe down to your children. Not to mention you could beat them as much as you wanted as long as they didn't die in two or three days from the beating... Sharia law pretty much follow biblical law...

Yes this was before MTV! Damn what happened to music? At least she didn't have to be naked riding a wrecking ball!

Is there anything wrong with being seen eating alone in a restaurant?
Moontanman replied to Mr Rayon's topic in Ethics
Eating alone is only a problem if you don't like to be alone, I don't mind being by myself, i am damn good company... -

Stone Cold Dude! Recent papers and empirical data suggests that the possibility of habitable planets has expanded greatly, out to 10 AU around Sol like stars... So many terrestrial class planets have been found in this area around other stars alien life is beginning to look more likely than ever. Of course there are a hand full of UFO sightings that have a rather high strangeness, How about that granpa?

Not a very good one either...

Possibly they should be more aware of what is possible with modern technology instead of trying to make ancient technology work... https://www.technologyreview.com/s/540991/meltdown-proof-nuclear-reactors-get-a-safety-check-in-europe/

I would wish that more theists really knew what their holy books really say. Since I have indeed studied religion, especially the christian one, read the Holy Bible several times and from what I've seen so far you haven't a clue about religion or science... I smell troll..

Do you believe the death penalty is unethical?
Moontanman replied to Lyudmilascience's topic in Ethics
I am on the fence about this, killing an innocent man by accident even if he was convicted is a nightmare, but life long imprisonment is cruel and unusual in my book. Being locked up with real criminals is high on my list of things not to do, I would fear that worse than simply being killed. The expense of simply keeping someone alive who can never be released into society is a bit of a problem as well. Primitive humans, I have been told, simply exiled a bad person from the group, but for humans that was as good as a death sentence. with out companions living in the wild before humans had beat down most of the really large predators was as good as a death penalty. I can't bring my self to categorically say one way or another, it would have to be on a case by case basis for sure. ultimately let the family members have some say in it... maybe... -
It depends for me, if someone is going to attack me and I know, then a knife is preferable to a gun, but if I don't know he is coming death by knife is painful and often just slow enough to make you really suffer, that is why it's usually considered personal or sadistic to kill with a knife. As you might guess I have been a carrying member of knife nuts my whole life. A cub scout knife when i was 8, dangerous thing, it had no built in safety at all cut my fingers many times... When i hunted a carried a bowie knife my grandfather gave it to me, a case xx, I used it to clean and cut up game. I now have a folding lock back Buck Knife with a 5.5 inch blade... I have never really thought about using it as a weapon but if held in my fist it is heavy enough to make a punch really hurt... To me a knife is a tool, I feel naked without it, about like my hat, I just don't feel dressed without it.. I also carry a multitool in my car, a snatch rope, a empty gas can, jumper cables, and fix a flat... I was also a scout...

Chemistry is very deterministic, how do you justify asserting it is chance?
-
This is true and a knife makes the deaths much more personal and messy. It takes a particular form of crazy to do something that malevolent... I still a determined man with a simple pocket knife could do far more damage in a crowded place like a mall than most would think to me a knife is more of a terror weapon than a gun, in unarmed crowded space it would a mad house of carnage...

Dealing with creepy-crawlies (and collecting them)
Moontanman replied to Nukeyfox's topic in Amateur Science
I've never had a bug collection but I catch some of them regularly for fish food. Your best route is to start out with "bugs" that cannot harm you. I have to admit that I always wanted to collect dragonflies but their almost intelligent behavior and actions keeps me from doing it. -
There is both geological, fossil, and genetic evidence that shows conclusively there was never a first human. If you could indeed line up a picture of ever one of your ancestors over many thousands of generation there would be no point where you could point to a first human, everything gives birth to what species it is. At no point is there a line that can drawn, no dogs giving birth to kittens, no crocoducks, just a slow gradual change that is still going with each generation of living things...

Chemistry is how. Again you are insinuating that a power of some kind has to be responsible for a cell? Life at it's most basic is just chemistry, everything else is simply emergent properties of evolution by natural selection. No "power" is necessary any more than the creation of a snow flake requires a power, it's just physics and chemistry. If you want I can give you a link to a talk by Dr. Szostak an expert in abiogenesis, his talk and a couple others helped me to understand what is going on but at it's most basic life is chemistry and physics...

I could make an argument that if had been using a gun he would have been found and stopped due to the noise of gun fire. I won't because it is very possible there was no one there to stop him but the police would have called sooner and maybe some lives would have been saved. I've heard it often repeated that a determined man is more dangerous at close range with a knife than a man with a hand gun..
-
Yes the first cell developed within the universe. Life //...............................././. Life is an emergent property that develops out of complex chemical reactions fueled by available energy

No, you should have specified which religions mythos you wanted to compare. You did not specify the monotheistic abrahamic mythos... nor did you give any reason to any reason to think that particular mythos was any better than any other. On top of that the creationism story you want to justify is not concordant with the scientific evidence...
