Communicating with an alien species.
Moontanman replied to too-open-minded's topic in General Philosophy
Demonstrate an ant is intelligent... We are not talking about bacteria, at least I was under the impression we are talking about intelligent aliens... Without communication you cannot pass down information that technology is based on and if you do not have technology we will be unlikely to meet. Someone in SETI said something to the effect that an intelligence without technology is not what we are looking for and since we are using communications technology to look for them by definition they would have to have similar technology, if not they are not going to be broadcasting... -
I would beg to differ, it works quite well for homosexuals, just because it doesn't make sense to you is irrelevant. Catrary to what you seem to think sexuality is not an on off switch, yes or no, it is a spectrum and people are all along that spectrum and homosexuals can and do have sex with the opposite sex. Suggesting they cannot is just showing ignorance of the subject. In some species at least homosexula behavior allows the less dominant individuals to have access to females they would not normally have access to. I'm not sure this occurs in vertebrates but it does in invertebrates. Saying that it's unnatural then saying that animals are too dumb to know better is dumb... I would suggest that your understanding of sexuality in general and human sexuality in particular is the real problem here. I suggest you quit trying to judge others and stigmatize those you don't approve of by going to a book of old myths and fairy tales and pay attention to the real world, treat others as you would like to be treated yourself and leave that which you don't understand to the people who do and maybe one day you will acquire the wisdom to at least understand that you do not understand..

Communicating with an alien species.
Moontanman replied to too-open-minded's topic in General Philosophy
I disagree, if aliens have technology they have to have some basic concepts in common with us... If they don't have technology we will never interact to begin with... -
I have to ask, did you bother to read the link I provided?

I think the idea of distraction is the most plausible explanation, but it of course begs the question of who was doing the distracting. The USAF couldn't admit to the Soviets doing it and there would seem to be no reason for the US to do it to themselves. It's interesting that quite a few "UFOs" are in this category, in fact some of the most puzzling are just glowing lights, and not all can be explained by flares and remain unexplained. This series of UFO sightings over Washington DC were not any more than lights but they were picked up on radar and they traveled fast enough to keep up with jets... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1952_Washington,_D.C._UFO_incident

Communicating with an alien species.
Moontanman replied to too-open-minded's topic in General Philosophy
I think that math would be the basis of any realistic communication with aliens, any technological advanced species would have to understand math and further communication could be built on that foundation.. -
You are aware that homosexuality is present in nearly all species that have sex? It's not just in people...

In the 1940's and beyond a peculiar type of UFO was sighted by many people including some famous scientists, to this day they remain unexplained and so far have defied any reasonable explanation. The UFOs were colloquially called green fireballs and at first glance are not really compelling until you understand just how odd they really were. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_fireballs The "fireballs" could not be explained by natural phenomena and were clustered around US military bases and research facilities connected with Nuclear weapons, so tightly clustered around "nuke" facilities that even mainstream scientists considered them to be of high concern. While some considered them to be an unknown natural phenomena others disagreed but the the meteor expert Lapaz considered them to be unknowns. Due to their unnatural behavior no realistic explanation has ever been suggested and the green "fireballs" remain in the unknown category despite numerous sighting and even retrieval of debris. Early on they were thought possibly to be a weapon or spy system of the Soviets but nothing was ever confirmed.

I think it was hijacked and is sitting at a secret runway some place relatively near by..

I'd be willing to discuss this speculatively but not as serious science. I think a case can be made that at least some religions could be based on alien/human interactions it's an interesting topic but it's just spinning "ifs" "maybes" "could haves" with no real substance... The idea that our ancestors couldn't have done the things they did is bit insulting and not necessary to the idea of alien contact..

Still the same reason i gave, similar is not the same, plesiosaurs are not dolphins, no matter how many times a land animal evolves into a sea creature it will never independently evolve into a dolphin... If all humans dropped dead tomorrow the great apes might evolve into another animal capable of the things we are but it would still not be human... Even if a cell line similar to eukaryotes evolved it would still be genetically distinct from any extant eukaryotes, it could be similar but it would not be the same thing..

Another old song the is eerily relevant today...

Still relevant after all these years...

Has the appearance of Europeans lightened up in 5000 years?
Moontanman replied to Moontanman's topic in Science News
Not necessarily, primates cannot make Vitamin C but most other animals can, I'm not sure but other animals might make their own Vitamin D.... Also, humans cover their bodies with clothes which could interfere with absorbing sunlight as well... -
Oh Well! I figured it was editing of some kind, thanks guys...

The time stamps all match, it is a neat trick of editing at the very least...

Weird video of truck striking a man riding a bike, he seems to appear in a flash of light after he is hit...

Salpa maxima: a translucent tunicate (sea life)
Moontanman replied to EdEarl's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
I've caught salps in nets before, odd creatures for sure. They are mobile Tunicates, they look like Tunicate larvae in many ways, a great example of neoteny at work. Tunicates are a basil off shoot of chordates. Tunicate larvae resemble primitive fish in many ways, tunicates ie sea squirts are wide spread in the oceans of the world and an important part of the ecosystem. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salp https://sites.google.com/site/chordatestunicatesandlancelets/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunicate Where I live we have these sedentary colonial tunicates that look a lot like brain coral, they are often brightly colored and colonies are often big as footballs.. -
typical basset hound behavior... Froggy went a courtin' he did ride.. should have brought his glasses along this time..

It appears the first animals may have had more influence on the oxy levels in the ocean than once thought. By removing organic particles from the ocean, sponges and other filter feeders removed a drain on the oxygen in the ocean allowing oxygen levels to rise and allow for more complex animals to evolve. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/03/140309150540.htm
