How did life started on earth???
Moontanman replied to Rajnish Kaushik's topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Panspermia is not exactly mainstream science. Here is a link to get you started... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abiogenesis -
Hard to really say, it would depend on how dark the surface was at the spot you were measuring. During the day ice would sublime into vapor very rapidly, since water is a poor shield for radiation it would have to be quite thick. The vapor would disperse immediately into the general atmosphere of the moon, yes the moon does have an atmosphere but it is equal to a very good vacuum on the earth. Plants have been grown in the Regolith of the moon that was brought back to earth... I'd like to see those plans... It is a mystery... I have no idea what an H3 reactor is...

I was under the impression that some models do seem to indicate that cooling, at least localized cooling is likely if average global temperatures do go up, disrupting the Gulf stream, as John mentioned could have that effect.

Asteroids - Finally, the Definitive Theory.
Moontanman replied to Fred Commons's topic in Speculations
I agree with Ophiolite, please stay and discuss, not being right is only a bad thing if you don't know it. I know that one of the original ideas about the origin of the asteroids was a disrupted planet and there are still some intriquing ideas around that hypothesis. Like Ophiolite I need some clarification around the Jupiter's red spot before i can understand what you are asserting... -
I don't see how being obligated to ourselves is a problem. Why should something after death "be" much less be something we are responsible to and why shouldn't being responsible to ourselves ultimately be the most important thing? I have to live in my own skin, I know what is right and what is wrong both internally and externally, they might not always agree but not being ashamed of my own actions is far more important than what some "thing" outside of reality feels about "me".

Phosphoric acid does the job quite well, several different brand names are widely sold...

While I agree with the idea that naming popular people as gods is a misnomer at best I can remember when I was a kid the religious fundamentalists having their collective panties in a knot over various music idols like Elvis and others claiming they were Idols in the literal sense and that the people who liked them were literally worshiping them.

So no tiny giraffes? Rays have such a long life span breeding for small size would take a long time as would many other large fish.

While most people think of GMO as food crops I have been thinking of GMO pets, specifically aquarium fishes. If you could modify the genes of certain fish to make them smaller as adults it would be highly profitable. Stingrays are very popular but most quickly outgrow all but the largest tanks. A freshwater ray that stayed less than 6" across the disc would be highly sought after. Other freshwater fishes of unusual types such as sturgeon or paddle fish would also bring big returns. Sharks would be a bit more difficult for freshwater but even saltwater sharks that were small as adults would bring a high demand. many fish would work although some are already being sold they soon die of being in a restricted space and altering them so as to get much smaller adults. Aquarium fish are a big industry, billions of dollars in sales, and dwarf fish of normally large species would be very popular. Is this a pipe dream or would it be reasonable to do this?

I'd go with CPVC at least, it's high temperature resistant and corrosion resistant... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorinated_polyvinyl_chloride -

God and hero are not the same thing Alan...

Alan, I know you understand this concept, in the face of a lack of any evidence the default position is that what ever is being asserted doesn't exist. Sure there is a possibility, there is a possibility there is a tea pot orbiting Uranus but until evidence of that tea pot is provided the default position is that there is no tea pot..
-
I am not completely sure what you are asserting but atheist is not against believing it just means I don't buy what theists are selling. When something is not supported by evidence the default position is that it doesn't exist, do you require proof invisible unicorns do not exist?
-
It has progressed to the person on the other end of this computer... There is considerable evidence of how life started, no where near as much as supports evolution but quite a bit, sadly most of the evidence is quite complex and boring chemistry but I have three lectures by Jack Szostak that make it pretty clear, ask and i will direct you to them. Science does not deal in proof God is not an answer, it raises more questions that cannot be answered and stifles any further inquiry.
-
I second his findings, the burden of proof lies with the person making the positive claims, the default position is not you can't prove so it might be true but you have no evidence so until you do it's not true...

Actually it was a dull gray but a little polish/elbow grease and it came off, still puzzling...

What could discolor a platinum ring? My wife's wedding band was discolored by something when she was cleaning up, she said she thought it was chlorine bleach, would that be reasonable?
