Unity+, on 12 Aug 2013 - 8:54 PM, said: While your idea of god may be against such, those things were once part of a religion that had just as much evidence as your religion does and was against your religion which won not because it had more compelling evidence but because anyone who wouldn't convert to christianity was killed, often quite painfully and gruesomely... . In fact the Bible states that unicorns are real, do you believe in unicorns?

Yes but it consumes more energy that it makes via fusion... You went wrong when you said this: Please show some support for this fusing of silicon, nickle, and iron and the release of energy via fusing these elements together...

What would aliens look like?

I think that hybridizing technologies from different technological species would have far reaching effects and would probably be the single most obvious advantage to contact. Technologies millions of years ahead of us might be indistinguishable by us from magic. I think there is something called the law of mediocrity that says we are likely about average in age as a civilization but I can't see how that could be asserted with only one data point. The idea of a technological intelligence that develops on a world very close to it's star, very high temps, maybe liquid aluminum as a solvent and some sort of bio metallic compounds would be a treasure trove of knowledge if we could exchange ideas IMHO... But really any cross pollinating of technologies would be fruitful... The non vertebrates with internal skeletons on Earth would be echinoderms, if vertebrates hadn't prospered they might have be able to come out on land and compete with arthropods but it is of course complete speculation but assuming that life on another planet would resemble ours in the slightest is speculation as well, I see no reason to assume life on another planet would be anything like life on Earth other than broad strokes ... -
Why does that place holder have to be an intelligent being? Why can't it just be an unknown but being investigated?

SCIENCE IS AN AMAZING WORK WHOS PURPOSE IS TO EXPLAIN GOD'S CREATIONS.
Moontanman replied to zorro's topic in Speculations
The God particle was originally called the God Damn Particle because it was so difficult to find, not because it had anything to do with god... The publishers didn't want to publish a book with God Damn in the title so they shortened it to God Particle... -

The GOD Particle has nothing to do with God, google is your friend and you are begging the question big time by presupposing god with no evidence what so ever... That is mighty white of you to allow atheists to participate... Please google god particle before this becomes embarrassing... -

On a planet with higher gravity six or more limbs might be better on large animals. I think the main reason arthropods have been crowded out of the large animal niches has more to do with less effective breathing apparatus than exoskeletons... then you have non vertebrates with internal skeletons, why didn't they conquer the land? Carbon based? I'd almost bet the farm carbon is the backbone of all life forms. There are other possibilities of course, Boron chemistry is arguably more complex than Carbon chemistry but Boron is rare, silicon is rarer than carbon but more common on the earth than carbon yet all life we know is carbon based. Gold proposed that silicone type life might exist deep in the earth where temps and pressures radically change the properties of silicones, silicone might form life but it couldn't exist in current surface conditions. Silicon life might be possible in very low temps where silanes would dissolve in hydrocarbons but silanes have not been found in nature to my knowledge. As for humanoid, I think an argument could be made for the humanoid body shape being conductive to intellegent life but I doubt you would mistake one of them for human. Humans are the result of billions of years of evolution... I think life on other planets is a sure bet but I see no reason to expect it to be anything like earth life, vertebrates as we know them were at one time represented by one tiny fish like animal, if it had become extinct there would be no vertebrates and we would see all the ecological niches occupied by creatures nothing like what we see on earth... I am curious why you would think telepathy is even a possibility. I am sure that if nothing else their computers could talk to ours but they might communicate with color changes or bio luminescence, cuttlefish seem to have complex communication skills based on colors and pattern changes on their skin. If they use sound it could be very high frequency like bats or very low frequency like elephants, so many possibilities... The waves of light and dark flowing over the cuttlefish is not shadows but the actual changing color of the animal which it has conscious control over. All cephalopods have amazing control over color, shape, skin texture and can change colors so fast they look like strobes... -
I have to agree, I know people who will run out of the room if they see a snake on TV and they have never seen one in person. I never felt afraid of snakes even though I was brought up by people who constantly preached that snakes were the embodiment of supernatural evil...

Which God? Krishna perhaps? People who find Krishna say the same thing, or maybe Adrianna, I know quite a few people who find themselves whole after devoting themselves to her, I have been honored to witness "Calling down the Moon" it's quite moving but ultimately no different than praying to Thor (I do know people who do) or any other deity. So which is it, solidarity to a social group or Jupiter taking an active role in your life?

Where I live, in south eastern NC, the temp of a lake in the summer, at ten meters, would be around 68 to 72 degrees but then that is the ground water temps, in more northerly climes the temp would be lower... surface water here can reach human body temps easy...

Really interesting to read peoples take on snakes, I love them, I have never been afraid even when a cottonmouth chased me repeatedly. I once had a snake that would come to me when called, I demonstrated it many times to amazed and sometimes frightened people. I could have someone release the snake across the room or even in another room and i would sit down and tap the floor and the snake would come to me and coil up in my lap, it was a 10 foot red tailed boa I raised from a hatchling. In the interest of total disclosure it would bite me too if I thwarted it's desire to chase squirrels up trees... it could bite quite hard and left bloody wounds if I trifled with it too much.... The last snake I had was a scarlet king snake, I had it for ten years, it wouldn't bite me but it would bite other people.... BTW Zapatos, the snake was probably trying to get a good smell of your breath when it looked at you in the face, it's how they sense the world... My boa would come to within an inch or less to flick it's tongue over my lips and nose...

I have to agree with this, I can't see how morals could exist separate from humans, or wolves, or crows, or chimps, or any other social animal and their morals are going to be quite different from what we think of as morals but it's how they evolved, our morals are part of us or a tendency toward certain behaviors and those behaviors are part of us but we work out the details, in times of plenty people who work well together may have different morals if things get bad, as conditions change morals change...

Agreed, I would like to revisit this a few weeks down the line, I'm betting those boys were not killed by the snake...

That tragedy is difficult to understand, snakes don't just kill, if they kill they eat it... and the boys were strangled? Why both? A snake, if it attacked them would have eaten the first boy and left the other one alone... Constrictors do not strangle, they suffocate you by preventing you from breathing... lots of red flags in that story...

Cacti are perennial, they start blooming in the late spring and through the summer, the ones in the top pic bloom all summer with new blooms every few days but the blooms open up at night and close the next morning and drop off. Some of the other cacti bloom only once a year or so but the blooms stay open for several days. I used to hybridize cacti to get various colors and shapes of blooms and cacti, I am thinking of starting again...
