Richard Dawkin's God Delusion, I could not read it
Moontanman replied to CosmosCranium's topic in Religion
No, science is not belief, it does not allow belief, belief is what religion is, can you not see the difference? Point out something Dawkins says that is inaccurate... I happen to believe that even moderate religion is driven by it's radical fringes but my "belief" aside I've never heard Dawkins assert something as truth he couldn't back up but he does slay the horsefeathers that many of the religious assert as fact, it hurts to have something you truly believe to be true shown to be false but honest men admit they are wrong and go on, the religious ignore reality and in fact assert that were scripture and reality clash scripture must take precedence. I know Islam does this as well, the whole saltwater freshwater thing is proof of this, that lie is asserted over and over by muslims, usually in muslim schools, as truth when even a small knowledge of the world shows it to be completely false. There are other examples but i see no reason to pick apart any religious dogma here, it would be off topic but rest assured it can be done... You will find nothing of scientific value in any of the worlds religions, no advancement of knowledge, our entire first world culture is based in science, not religion, religion contributes nothing to the sum total of human knowledge and usually inhibits such advancement.... -
The Real Origin of The Scientific Method Is Religious
Moontanman replied to Dbaiba's topic in Religion
Yes, unless you list those facts from the Quran then you are making an appeal to authority, something someone else claims the quran says, what does it actually say? -
I see no reason to assume we are at the front of the pack, a few million years difference could make us so advanced we would be god like but there is no reason to assume intelligence wasn't possible during the time of the dinosaurs, near the end quite a few species were developing signs of large brains, gripping hands, the asteroid was just bad luck. Take out that asteroid impact and a tens of millions of years old civilization of some species of dinosaur could be in control. If we take the idea of mediocrity seriously then we should be about average but millions of year old civilizations are not out of the question. the real question is "where are they"...

I am asking you to be specific, telling me what other people say the Quran says is meaningless, much like christians who only believe because of what their religious leaders tell them, ignoring what it actually says... Oh and by the way, invented by and practiced by doesn't mean Islam invented it any more than Christianity invented the theory of gravity or that Judaism invented relativity... -
The Real Origin of The Scientific Method Is Religious
Moontanman replied to Dbaiba's topic in Religion
I have been involved in this topic from the beginning, you are the one who dragged islam into it and I must say your assertions have been dishonest to say the least, ignoring something because it's uncomfortable is wrong, if you have issues then you should defend them not simply dismiss them. From what you have said so far either your religion is whatever you say it is or you are simply not familiar with what it says, don't worry very few religious people are knowledgeable about that their scripture actually says... You need to support this with something other than an appeal to authority, so far you have failed to show any evidence this is true. Sir Isaac Newton was a very devout Christian, his contributions to science are legendary but his religion had nothing to do with his scientific discoveries... -

It's interesting that you the deny the actual scripture, it must be a religious thing to ignore what your scripture actually says when it is embarrassing but true... -

Is there any chance you could quote the actual verse from the Quran that supports your assertion because so far all you have is an appeal to authority... -
The branes are attracted to each other via gravity, the energy release of contact pushes them apart, gravity eventually pulls them back together... I didn't see that assertion in your link...

The Real Origin of The Scientific Method Is Religious
Moontanman replied to Dbaiba's topic in Religion
This would be my point, in the story the man couldn't back up his sighting a of a sauropod with anything but his personal experience. In the face of total lack of positive evidence a reasonable man would have to admit that maybe he didn't see the dinosaur at all.... You need to show where Cousteau makes this claim, it is physically impossible for a lake of freshwater to lie under a layer of salt water. Please show us where Cousteau makes this assertion.... -

The Real Origin of The Scientific Method Is Religious
Moontanman replied to Dbaiba's topic in Religion
No Dbaiba, what you assert about freshwater lying under the ocean was not confirmed by Cousteau, in fact it is a physical impossibility, freshwater is less dense that salt water and could not lay under a layer of salt water, salt water and freshwater come into contact in estuaries where they mix. There is no doubt that freshwater and salt water mix in nature. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estuary I live near the ocean i see salt water and fresh water every day, there is not doubt they mix every day. -
Thanks, I have problems with my hands and i had to quit for the day but I'll be back at it tomorrow morning... Must be a cam follower in there someplace...

The Real Origin of The Scientific Method Is Religious
Moontanman replied to Dbaiba's topic in Religion
Do not use me as an example, your answer to me was nothing but special pleading, I can, or others to be precise, use that to justify believing in the moon goddess Adriana, at least that religion has naked women dancing under the full moon.... Dbaiba, first I want to say you have the right to believe anything you want as long as you don't feel the need to force anyone else to believe that way but I want you to think about this. This little story is a loose quote from one of my favorite youtubers AronRa. Lets say you are woken up in the middle of the night by noise outside your home. You go out to investigate and see a sauropod dinosaur walking down your street. You run up to it and you can feel it's rough hide, smell it, hear it breath and maybe even ride it if you wanted to. You regain your senses and run inside to get your camcorder but when you come back out it's gone, no trace, you know what you saw but in the coming days no trace of the creature turns up, no excrement. no destruction, no foot prints, nothing.... You hear about some other guy who saw a dinosaur too but his couldn't have been the same one you saw because his was a theropod and after weeks go by and no trace of either beast shows up you would have to admit that just maybe you didn't see it after all. Personal experience is not proof of anything, if you can't show it then you don't know it... -
Cognitive load of being religious and scientific
Moontanman replied to icehorse's topic in Medical Science
Most of the religious fundamentalists I have come in contact with are quite sure science is wrong, some think it is a conspiracy headed by Satan, others just think they can't see the trees for the forest. Many moderates i know simply don't care and believe anyway assuming God will explain the discrepancies at some point or assume humans have distorted the word of god or that humans simply can't understand the mind of god.... -

I'm working on my Honda Element, and when i was fixing the window on the passenger side door the linkage from the indoor latch came off. Now I can't find where it attaches to the door latch internally. I can hook it to the internal door handle but I see no possible place for the linkage to hook to the internal door latch mechanism. Here is what I am working with... part 13/30, where it attaches to the door internal door latch handle 22/32 and 10/27 is obvious and easy but the internal attachment eludes me... This diagram is singularly unhelpful in figuring out where it attaches. it must transfer a side to side motion to an up and down motion but there is no obvious attachment point, I have been working on it all day to no avail... Oh yeah, where it attaches cannot be seen, it can only be touched...

It was dishonest because he didn't answer the question, he misdirected the question by answering something else, it's a strawman, it's dishonest and a typical tactic of religious apologetics... -
A prediction that can be tested and shown to be empirically valid, example, I can drop weights from a specific height and predict how long they will fall, how fast they will be going when they hit ect. This can be repeated by other people with the same results... Can metaphysics make such a testable prediction?
