No, seeing is not believing, if I told you I had seen a dragon would you accept that with no evidence? I tried to show you this with the example of seeing a dinosaur, humans can and do often hallucinate and telling the difference is not an obvious thing. Ok I'll admit my ignorance, how does that equation show evidence of a god?

So doubt makes something more likely to be true?
-
Would you care to expound on your criticism or are you simply someone who cannot understand reason....
-
No, if you can't show it you don't know it. To paraphrase AronRa "We don't know everything about anything, and what we do know is always subject to a certain amount of error" Your personal experience is meaningful only to you, if you can't demonstrate it to someone else then it is just something you believe. To again paraphrase AronRa "if you went outside in the middle of the night and saw a sauropod dinosaur walking down your street, you could run up and touch it, smell and maybe even ride it if you wanted. You run back inside to get your camcorder but when you come back out the creature is gone and no trace of it exists, no footprints, no dung, no damage, nothing to back up your claim of what you saw could you really say it was real? Someone else claims to have seen a dinosaur but his description doesn't match yours and was a theropod and obviously not the same one you saw. After days and weeks pass and no sign of the creature turns up even you would have to admit that you might not have actually seen it" Personal experience is not evidence Semjase....

The Tea Baggers are nothing but minions of the Koch brothers. The Tea Party was not a grass roots movement it was designed and orchestrated by the Koch brothers...

Truth.... a loaded word that seldom means anything but what someone believes, can you backup your version of the truth with anything but belief?

I can't speak to other states but North Carolina has not only continued to veer to the right it has driven off the cliff and is in a death plunge into the black hole of religious dominionism, they actually changed the state constitution to invalidate civil unions to make sure gay people could never marry. The law proscribing a state religion was only narrowly defeated and is expected to be submitted again, creationism is widely held as science superior to evolution. I live in a relatively liberal part of the state and the crazies are gaining ground here as well....

If... If a frog had wings they wouldn't bust their little slimy butts every time they jump. We have no more evidence for an infinite universe than we have for a god. Life in the universe is at best a chemical reaction that only occurs under rare conditions, the vast majority of the universe doesn't support that chemical reaction. Again the assumption of multiple universes is no better than the assumption of a god, it's just as likely that the laws of nature cannot be anything but what they are and allow a universe to exist. Then there is the idea that quite different laws could allow for life in a universe. A universe with no weak nuclear force would look pretty much like our own and allow life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weakless_Universe

Horrific, I am glad you weren't in the path I've seen a tornado from a distance but never in a populated area. We get hurricanes but at least we get a few days notice.
-
Ohhhh a scatophile The argument that the universe is fine tuned for us is flawed in a fundamental way. First of all the universe is definitely not fine tuned for life, life can exist only in a very tiny fraction of the universe, second if the universe were different then things would be different and we wouldn't be here to expound on how fine tuned it was to begin with....

Wouldn't it be a hoot if we suddenly found out the universe is really excrement?

Overtone, it may have been punishment but the punishment was cruel and unusual and any infraction would add years to your sentence so that even a short sentence could effectively be a life sentence. The labor was forced and others profited by it, it was seldom make work, i would at least define that as tyranny and slavery.
-
Just for the record, John, Overtone, the type of slavery being discussed here, if I am reading this correctly, consisted of making laws that were almost impossible not to break and making months or years at hard labor the punishment. While it mostly happened to black people there were more than an insignificant number of poor whites who were also "enslaved" in this manner (has no one ever watched Cool Hand Luke?) In this day and time I would be loath to linger in certain parts of the south if I had no good reason to be there. There are still towns that have segregated proms and work camps still exist, yes it's shameful but denying it will not make it go away...

If God is love then why is there so much suffering in the world?
Moontanman replied to seriously disabled's topic in Religion
Ok, I'll give you that but why do innocents have to suffer due to actions of others they have no control over, if the driver is texting and his passengers are maimed by the crash how is that their choice? Your argument makes sense if everyone has a choice but that is demonstrably not true... God has also allowed us to choose the path of others as well, this is blatantly immoral, in fact "a God" by any definition is immoral when defined by his works.... -
So your dissatisfaction results in making unfalsifiable assertions that are no better than the traditions and beliefs you are already dissatisfied with?
-
You are making an association that cannot be falsified and so is meaningless... good job that...

This thread is not about the existence or nonexistence of a god or gods, please read the OP above, Several of us have allowed this thread to go off topic. I suggest a moderator split out the off topic posts....

Who created god?

Actually if the car is defective the fault is the car makers... -
No the laws of such harmony do not reflect a creator, that is a logical fallacy, the assertion that the laws of nature point to a creator is not proof of anything but the laws of nature. If the laws of nature were different things would be different. it is not proof or even suggestive of a god. We are here because the laws of nature allow it, if the laws of nature were different we would not be here to debate the issue. Please show some empirical evidence, existence is not evidence of anything but existence. Quoting authority figures is meaningless, and the world around us is easily explained by natural means. Nature is not self evidence of god, naturalistic causes explain the life and the universe quite well with no need of god.

Again, an appeal to authority is not evidence of anything but that person belief which is no better or worse than anyone elses... -
Yet another meaningless appeal to authority that is nothing but what someone else believes, belief does not equal knowledge...
-
The book of Mormon is demonstrably false, it is based on the lies of a convicted con artist, many glaring discrepancies exist, for instance the native Americans are not the descendants of the lost tribes of Israel.... If you want to debate the existence of God I suggest you start another thread, this is not the thread for that...
-
Offer it as many time as you wish it is still an appeal to authority... and as such a logical fallacy... Since you seem to like appeals to authority so much here is another quote from Einstein.... It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it.
