What would be proof of a God or gods running the universe?
Moontanman replied to Moontanman's topic in Religion
Well as soon as you find a structure that could not have been evolved naturally please feel free to point it out.... The analogy you make between man made and natural is false. man made things do not evolve into existence, they cannot reproduce, how ever life has evolved from simpler organisms and quite a bit of work points to a natural origin for life in general as well. The universe may have indeed had a first cause but if so I see no reason to propose that cause is a sentient being. Universes may be as natural as atomic decay... -
Why do some religious people require that the "end is near"?
Moontanman replied to tar's topic in Religion
Christian fundamentalists use this ploy to scare people into coming to god, I have heard the end is near all my life, I don't mean years from now but it was always signs and portents show the end i coming soon and we all must be ready, it could happen tonight!!! A group associated with a church I went to when I was a kid pulled off the old disappearing hitch hiker scam, it went on for several weeks, people would report they picked up a hitch hiker on the WV turnpike and the hitch hiker would ride in silence for a few minutes then suddenly shout Jesus is coming soon and disappear from the back seat of the moving car. It was exposed as a hoax after a couple of people admitted they had been put up to it by a revivalist preacher looking to fill his tents with paying customers... . -
I'd like to ad my vote to the whole distilling alcohol at home thing. It will usually take you years to gain the skills necessary to make drinkable whiskey, some people never get there, but making it from beer seems to be a odd place to start. A good rye mash or corn mash would be my starting point for whiskey, some red oak casks, several years of time and you might have something worth drinking, of course white lightning will get the job done too, sometimes you run across someone who really knows his stuff and can distill some pretty good alcohol, used to be a guy in a neighboring county i worked with who ran a still in his barn, he ran off a few gallons of rye two or three times a year, it was pretty good, smooth but it had a kick like a mule... I actually shared a few glasses, sitting next to his still, one day with him and the local sheriff... ah the simple life in rural America...

I've seen a similar piece of material hanging off other reptiles just after they hatched, i used to raise turtles and snakes, both lay eggs and have what appears to be placenta like material hanging off newly hatched individuals...

What would be proof of a God or gods running the universe?
Moontanman replied to Moontanman's topic in Religion
Why does the prime creator have to be a sentient being? You are also making the assumption that somethings will forever be inexplicable and therefore need a creator, if we had gone with that assumption we would still be dodging lightning strikes and assuming that god was angry with tall buildings and trees... Not assuming a god did it allowed us to find out not only what causes lightning but how to defend against it. We can prevent lightning from doing damage to buildings now with lightning rods, at first some theists claimed it was wrong to thwart the "righteous anger of god" and that using a lightning rod was a sin, then of course it became a bit embarrassing when they realized that churches were being hit by lightning more often than anything else and buildings equipped with lightning rods were being spared. -
probably the remains of the yolk sac, not a placenta, the placenta is the connection between the mother and the baby, since alligators lay eggs it could not have been a placenta. many non mammals have placenta like organs, some fish and sharks come to mind...

The Clash, Rock the Casbah, Joe Strummer... This band was an american progressive rock band, the album was known for large deceptions, the hit single from this album was instrumental in the album going platinum, the song was about a close encounter of the third kind... The song was controversial in some circles due to satanic connections...

The new Mentos and Diet Coke: accidental chemistry
Moontanman replied to ydoaPs's topic in Applied Chemistry
I don't think it's a chemical reaction, I know the mentos is a reaction that has more to do with suddenly increasing the surface area for bubbles to form resulting in a chain reaction of released CO2. (I watched it on myth busters) This could be a similar thing. I would recommend trying a powder of similar consistency but made of other or inert materials and seeing if you get a similar reaction. ... -
a couple questions about stars
Moontanman replied to brandoncotten's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
You seem to be thinking that all stars are visible to the naked eye. There are not billions and billions of stars in the range of the human eye. Some are in front of gas clouds. If a star went super nova on the other side of the galaxy not only would it be too far away top be seen by the naked eye it would be hidden by the galactic nucleus. I'm not sure how many stars are individually visible to the naked eye but it's not all stars or even billions of stars... Then as AGC52 pointed out very few stars explode... -

I honestly wonder if this belief in faith or need for faith is some how related to OCD. I am atheist but I carry around good luck charms, intellectually i know they are just objects but they make me feel comfortable. I have to carry out a few actions more than once to satisfy that part of me, it's not as bad as it used to be, my youngest son has bouts of it from time to time as well. I can see how parts of religion could be related, the constant feeling that otherwise nonsensical actions have a huge influence on your life, the rituals, repeating prayers over and over. My gut tells me there is a connection.... my gut is so big it has to be the Sheldon Cooper of guts...

Another clue? The bands name brazenly claimed they indulged in risky behaviors...

This band walked the fine line between rock and southern rock and country music. Named after a mountainous region, this song gave instructions on how to do a few interesting things, one of which was how to find an angel. Name the song, album and band the song came from...

Why does wet cold air feel so much colder than dry cold air?
Moontanman replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Physics
Here the water condenses as a layer of thin transparent ice not frost, but it does frost here as well... -
Spending some time in a small boat gives you some idea of momentum and friction and how they differ from driving a car for instance. Boats don't have brakes.... you have to figure action and reaction more than in a car... then there is the whole displacement of water/floating thingy...
