Why do some believe that secularism persecutes Christians?
Moontanman replied to jeskill's topic in Religion
Yeah, such power would result in burning people at the stake, throwing people in the river to see if they floated, torture of every horrific type, shunning of anyone who disagreed..... NOT WAIT THAT IS CHRISTIANITY, Christianity did that before secularism gelded the religion and made it possible to have a first world culture... -
If the Sun is redder at sunrise and sunset due to passing through more atmosphere would a planet with 10x the atmosphere of the earth but with the same composition make the sun appear redder?

Only questions not allegations rigney? Have you stopped beating your wife? Just a question not an allegation... Well then Romney shouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell then should he?

evolution of the eye
Moontanman replied to vincentfromyay's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
I think you are looking for something that never existed. The eye spot on microorganisms resulted from light sensitive proteins that already had some other function in the microbe. Microbes in some environments that could detect light had an advantage and so left more progeny than those that did not. From that you would see slow advance to microbes that kept most of their light sensitive proteins in one place as in an eyespot. The more concentrated they were the better they detected light. As long as detecting light was advantageous natural selection would select for this trait. The eye has evolved independently several times in several lineages of animals. But the light sensitive proteins came first in many different microbes, the ability to detect light and dark is advantageous in many environments in many ways and natural selection has amplified this over the billions of years living creatures have existed. The idea that an organism without genes for an eye suddenly developed genes for an eye or produced an organism with an eye is mistaken. At no time would you see an animal with no eyes give birth to one that does... -
Considering islamophobia is a big part of the republican platform you would think they would approve of that...

What is your justification for believing in a God?

That is the adult version... -
What reason would that be?

I have to ask "Why is it so important to keep beating the president with this one thing?" Mistakes were obviously made, I can't see how any president or his administration or the government or whatever body is responsible for the prevention of these can be expected to never get it wrong. This one thing does not show Obama to be incompetent, it's not even particularly surprising, terrorist attacks are as varied as they are difficult to prevent. I doubt Obama being wrong about this incident, on purpose or by accident, is as earth shattering as you seem to want it to be. In the greater scheme of things how is this any worse than the outright fabrications being asserted by Romney and crew over and over in this campaign... More importantly is there any reason to think Romney would have done better?

Ummm, who is Gary Johnson?

I started to specify US voters only but not only does who is the POTUS affect the rest of the world but this forum is international and I see no reason to short sheet anyone who is a member because they aren't US citizens. Certainly a lot of the people who have debated the pros and cons of Romney and Obama are not US citizens...

Vote to see who is the favorite of the people on SFN, I know it will have little meaning statistically but it would be interesting. If you want you can add why you are going to vote the way you are but if you do keep it short and factual.

It's amazing, six pages and more than one hundred posts centering around whether or not The President intentionally lied or was given faulty information to base his response on something he had no personal control over and might very well have lied due to reasons of National Security. Yet his opponent has demonstrably lied about nearly everything in his campaign and no one seems to care, just get Obama out at all costs... I have already voted and this year has seen 10x the political signs of other years, the streets where I live are practically coated with political signs. The TV ads are founts of lies and spin. One jackass actually has his grandma telling everyone she knows her grand son will be a good congress critter as though that recommendation is somehow relevant. How bad a person would you have to be for your grandma not to endorse you? I really wish i had the capability to record some of the local ads i am seeing, they would make for great you tube videos... Oh yeah, one more thing, if I have to hear one more time how being a man of faith is important to being in government I think I'll puke...

I have to agree, 7 seems a bit too young to be told that stuff unless they ask, i always answered any questions my sons's had honestly and sometimes they were lulu's but I figured if they can ask the question they deserve an answer.

Nothing is above the hydrogen layer, the entire atmosphere is made up principally of hydrogen with a few other gasses mixed in. The atmosphere just gets ever more dense as you go down into the planet.

That is an interesting question, I stumbled on it's value quite accidentally. I started growing it for mosquito cover but it got so thick it was drowning squirrels who thought it was solid ground and one day i was potting a birds nest fern and I decided to use azolla instead of sphagnum ( I was out of sphagnum ) and it proved to be a powerful fertilizer and potting medium. The fern grew into a small tree! koi carp eat it like candy, even turtles like to eat it. I have used it for years as a base or additive to many custom potting mediums I have used for various plants. I never tried to smoke it but that does give me some GM type ideas...

Indeed... Those very ones...

I think you have cause and effect mixed up and magnetism has nothing to do with it. Jupiter formed beyond the ice line or the place where ices were stable in the solar nebula. Jupiter formed hot and is cooling down slowly, that is why is radiates about twice as much heat as it gets from the sun. As I said earlier saying Jupiter is cold because it's high level atmosphere is cold is the same as saying the earth it cold because it's high level atmosphere is cold. Jupiter has a greenhouse effect that warms it and the released heat of contraction also heats it up, if you were in a ship falling down in Jupiter's atmosphere you would roast not freeze as you got deeper.

Maybe we aren't smart enough to communicate with dolphins. Can you support your statement that dolphins can communicate with autistic people? Parrots can talk and I don't mean just mimic human words...

yes it can be done... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthesis_of_precious_metals

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azolla_event We keep hearing about ways to remove CO2 from Earth's atmosphere and this is a good idea but this tiny fern has in the past taken the earth from a hothouse earth to an icehouse earth. Can we use it to sequester CO2 now? Azolla has many interesting uses, it can be used as cattle feed, or to feed ducks and geese. I suspect, but I am not sure, that humans can eat it as well. Any body of water it grows across is cleaned by the fern and the fern squashes the reproduction of mosquitos. shallow bodies of water could be used to grow the stuff and harvest it to either feed to animals or even use as a fuel source. Organic material can be turned into hydrocarbons and possibly genetic engineering could cause azolla to make oil like certain species of algae have been GM'd to do. This is impressive, I have used it as potting soil and the nitrogen content makes higher plants grow like crazy. At the very least azolla could be used to replace nitrogen fertilizers since the plant fixes atmospheric nitrogen. Any thoughts?

Evidently we have different ideas about the definition of the surface of Jupiter and it's temps. the article I showed you said the the "surface" is considered to be at the 10 bar level which is 20 c, higher up it is cold and so is the earth, you seem to be defining the surface at the 1 bar level but as you go down the temps go up fast reaching a blazing 24,000 degrees at the center. Since there is no real surface I guess it's a moot point, sorry for bringing it up. http://www.universetoday.com/15097/temperature-of-jupiter/

Where in that wiki does it say the surface temperature of Jupiter is very low?
