  1. Great that you've gotten the thing up & running ! You don't find the obstacle of getting going in Linux world high, getting to know your way around & getting things to work easily ?

    Mac or PC

If you don't have any external restrictions which might become an issue (something you might require from pc world not available in mac or if you need to work in a pc infested environment etc.) I'd go for mac ... the hardware package & currently available software make it a real option, unless you need something special only available in pc. Experiences I've had on mac laptops have been overly positive compared to pc ones I've had (and am currently having due to some restrictions ... ).

  4. I'm working on a tribological problem involving a MoS2 coating, molybdenite, but am having a problem finding a suitable value for its elastic modulus (Young's modulus). Anyone got any insight ?

  6. What about "overriding" directly to system commands, like accessing appwiz.cpl etc. ... don't know whether it'd work when explorer is down ?
  7. Yeah, I've somehow gotten the idea for diamond being the "ultimate" and whether you can even go past it being questionable ... with the fully covalent 3D bonding and resulting extreme stiffness of it.
  8. Some diamond like get to a same order but still not too close as far as I know (they may have better other properties, like tribological ones, but not harder). For example DLC coatings used widely commercially (diamond like carbon) can have a hardness of about 2k HV while diamond is typically closer to 10k.
  9. Yep, take a chemical analysis of any nowadays steel and got your work cut out for you. Sure the term "stronger" is something got to be careful here ... add enough carbon and we're talking about cast irons, the other end resembling more glass than steel. Hardening mechanisms of metals might be an interesting topic itself.
  10. Does your "very mechanical" refer to what field of application you were studing or just that the applications were simplistic? Classical or quantum? I think they just look far worse than they actually are, the notation can do that sometimes.
  11. How did it go ... if you wealthy, old, and go to church real often (and have some redness in your neck area might add) you voted for Bush ? Its funny how educated people, who quite often happen to be the smarter of the bunch, go for the liberal side of things ... something for the US masses to think about.
  12. At least the largest Palestinian organizations are negotiating on how to proceed ... has not blown to anyones face yet, perhaps they'll get their act together since they really need to since Arafat ain't keeping it together.
  13. This one has at least somewhat understandable structure : http://math.fullerton.edu/mathews/n2003/Web/GaussianJordanMod/GaussianJordanMod.html
  14. A step in the right direction .... most of the countries signing it have already got things pretty well under control or are "decaying" economies (like Russia, i.e. industrial production has gone down and they've become "environmentally friendly") ... so the impact may be questionable. Wonder if the treaty has a sort of a follow-up ... or "what next" clause ?
  15. What sort of uses have they thought for the new thing ?
  16. Forums usually have an unfortunate tendency of being somewhat closed to alternative thinking or something they place below them .... stupid turf issues, would not mind having this kind around.
  17. Probably a wise choice ... most of the basic stuff is pretty simple ... once stuff like nonlinearities etc. stuff begin to surface that are out of reach of other means & specific to numerics then its more than worthwhile.
  18. Hmmm, depends on your definition of normal life, but in any case I've found lots of numerical methods (particularly in relation to PDEs) most interesting ... and usable, analytical stuff sucks if you need to do something real life.
  19. Most of Lagrangian mech applications I do are implemented via energy principles, and actually are pretty identical to principles such as the principle of virtual work or virtual power (equilibrium stuff). I think the mathematical constructs have some added value in comparison to other stuff if you're working for example with dynamics problems or need to include something with similar mathematical aspects, like optimization using numerical methods etc. The math is really elegant, though.
  20. I'm somehow still finding the pain of running enjoyable ... 10ks around 34-37 mins.
  21. Agree very much, from what I've collected people have been quite satisfied and personally the only problems I've had during the last couple of years have been a couple of false positives here and there.
  22. Great to have company ! Either way ... I'm skinny enough to do it running .
  23. I'm having a reoccurring problem of configuring EDS I-DEAS to work when the license server (Flexim) is separated by a firewall (ZA Pro).... sharing as much resources, opening ports etc. does not seem to produce a solution (all typical sols seem to fail, even opening a pipe with absolutely no protection does not help) ... so I'm getting the idea that something else is causing a problem rather than having something closed with ought not be ... anyone had any similar experiences with license servers ?
  24. Ok, we're all more or less smart enough to spend some time here ... why wouldn't we be in pinup shape ? Since push ups really ain't my specialty ... how many miles / kms can you guys do ? 42.195 km is pretty much my limit.
  25. Religious forums are always potential torches, but as long as some level of personal discretion remains it should be tolerated in my view. Religious debate & discussion is hard for many people, but limiting it is just a convenience ... taking the easy way out.
