  1. Thank you. I know that the regular IE had a lot of security holes. However, this toolbar seems to have fixed them. How else would you explain the fact that I'm not getting any trojans from the same web sites that used to put tons of trojans on my computer? I still wish there was a way I could run a complete security scan on the browser, just to make sure it is more secure. All I can find is security scans for firewalls, not browsers. Did you actually read the article before posting it? It is about returning to IE5 or below after installing IE6. I think I am using the most updated version of Firefox. It doesn't use very much RAM when it first starts, but when you have 6 tabs automatically loading another web site every 10 seconds, it won't be long before Firefox crashes. I can do the exact same thing with the new IE toolbar without any problems.
  2. Wow! This toolbar is amazing! I've had 5 different auto surf programs running for the past several hours, and haven't had any problems at all! Normally by this time regular IE would have let several trojans in my computer, and Firefox would have crashed from using too much RAM. None of those have happened yet! It says on Microsoft's web site that this toolbar will make IE faster and more secure. So far, it looks like they were right. Is there a web site that I can visit to test the security on the browser?
  3. Yes, but a lot of that is just backup files. It will make a huge difference when you start running out of hard drive space. You can install a lot of programs, or store a lot of music and pictures with 2 gigs. In 1998 I bought a computer with a 12GB hard drive. I thought it would be impossible to use that much hard drive space. After several years, I was searching through the hard drive trying to delete any file that I could. I'm sure it will eventually be the same way with today's 80GB and 120GB hard drives. I think Microsoft should at least give you the option to delete these backup files. Go to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309531 I had to use the Cacls command. You should probably download SP2. You won't be able to download other security updates without it. Also, the $NtUninstall folders are from the updates you download from Windows Update. Whenever Windows Update makes changes to any files, it copies the old files to one of these folders.
  4. Global warming is a very large issue, and it is much more than propaganda. It was on the cover of Time magazine a few weeks ago. They had an amazing article about global warming. I suggest that you visit http://reference.aol.com/globalwarming/timemagazine?id=20060327120109990001 and read the article. I would say that it is the best article you could find about global warming.
  5. I guess it depends on what you are doing. I run a lot of programs like http://www.autosurfpro.com for web site promotion purposes. When I run these programs in Firefox, I will come back after a few hours and find that Firefox is using about 800 MB of RAM. After a while, Firefox will just crash. When I run the program in IE, it keeps going without any trouble. However, I have a lot of problems with trojans getting into my system when I use IE.
  6. I really like the way they have IE's tabbed browsing setup. It's very easy to create a new tab. The Phishing filter is also a good idea. Onfolio looks interesting, but it will take me a while to figure out everything it can do. I always thought that IE had better performance than Firefox when it comes to RAM usage. When you are using a lot of tabs and doing lots of surfing in Firefox, it will just keep using more and more RAM. I've never had RAM problems with IE. The main disadvantage I see with IE is the security. Firefox is good at blocking Trojans that IE wouldn't block. Besides the Phishing filter, I wonder if this new toolbar improves IE's security?
  7. Microsoft has a free toolbar for IE at: http://ideas.live.com/programpage.aspx?versionId=f53eeee8-de38-45c8-bc6d-a4749e827cc5 I think this toolbar looks very impressive. It adds tabbed browsing to IE, and it has tons of other features.
  8. I just found another hidden backup in the "C:\Windows\$NTServicePackUninstall$" folder. These appear to be the old Service Pack 1 copies. Microsoft should make it easy for people to delete all of these backup copies. Each one is between 300MB-500MB. That is a lot if you are running out of hard drive space.
  9. I think you mean the "C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386" folder. I was talking about the "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386" folder which is almost the same thing as the dllcache. If you try to delete a file from System32 and dllcache (who would accidentally do that?) it will replace the file with one from the i386 folder.
  10. I just found a way into the "C:\System Volume Information" folder. There are a lot of other folders inside, and many of them contain backup copies of Windows XP components. I found one folder with over 100 copies of Internet Explorer! A few of them were just shortcuts, but most of them were exact copies of the iexplore.exe program.
  11. Windows XP seems to take up more hard drive space than most other operating systems. I think I just figured out why. Windows installs on your computer at least 2 times. In many cases, at least 3 different copies of Windows XP will exist on your hard drive! Most of the files of the first copy of Windows will be installed in the "C:\Windows\System32" folder. This is the copy of Windows that your computer will normally use. However, Microsoft decided to make a backup copy of Windows. They say this is to prevent you from accidentally deleting any of its components. This backup copy is located in the "C:\Windows\System32\dllcache" folder. This folder is usually hidden. If you purchased an older version of Windows XP and installed Service Pack 2 using Windows Update, there is probably a third copy of Windows on your computer. The third copy might be located in the "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386" folder. If you have System Restore enabled on your computer, there are probably even more backup copies of Windows on your hard drive. It stores these backup copies in the "C:\System Volume Information" folder. This is also a hidden folder. In fact, Windows won't even let you view its contents. If you try to access the folder, you will get a message that says, "Access is Denied." I did manage to get into this folder one time, but I can't remember how. There were many interesting files inside. There were also multiple backup copies of Windows XP components and old copies of some of my documents. I'm not really sure why all of these backup copies of Windows XP would be necessary. It does make it really difficult to delete or modify any part of Windows. If you try to delete a Windows file, it will quickly replace the file with a copy from one of the backup locations.
  12. Yes, I think Firefox has gotten a lot better recently. When I first started using it, I was having tons of problems with many of the web sites I use. However, now Firefox seems to be much more compatible.
  13. This program was designed for traffic exchange users. A traffic exchange is a web site promotion service. Go to http://www.ts25.com for an example of a very popular traffic exchange. Frame-breaker web sites can prevent people from using traffic exchanges, so my program is a good solution for them. Anyway, I made an update to the pop-up blocker code in my program. It still doesn't work right on one of my computers. Can somebody please test it and let me know if it is my computer, or a problem with my program?
  14. I created a free program that should block all frame-breaking web sites. I also added a new feature that should be able to block all pop-up ads. The pop-up blocker worked fine on one of my computers, but it won't work right on another computer. I'm not sure if there is a problem with the computer or my program. If you are running Windows XP, could you please go to http://www.surfingguard.com to download and test the pop-up blocker? Also, please make sure that Internet Explorer will work after you close my program. Please let me know if my program works for you. Thank you.

    Network

Thank you for your advice. What is a *nix server? Can it be a regular PC with special server software installed, or is it a separate piece of hardware? Where can I get it and also find instructions that can tell me how to setup the firewall? Will it allow my company to monitor and control the computers from a central location? Also, all of the employees will need IE. I tried installing Firefox, but it won't load the software on the server correctly. The program's navigation won't load, and the text is all scrambled. Then it brings up an error message that says, "You must have Internet Explorer 5 or higher to run this program."

That's right, Windows XP can be set to only allow certain users to install software. I never setup any of the computers, but I'm sure whoever did never created individual user accounts. However, that still won't prevent people from playing online games, or checking personal e-mail. All of the computers at each location are connected to a router, and the router is connected to the DSL or cable modem.

    Network

All of the LANs currently connect to the Internet using either DSL or cable modem. Most of the games were downloaded from the Internet. Many of them contained spyware or viruses. The company I work for wants to block anything that isn't related to work, including online shopping and checking personal e-mail. All of the locations are in the same state. The furthest distance between two locations is about 170 miles.
  18. I work for a company that has around 12 different locations. Each of these locations have computers, and the company has around 30 total computers. They also have a server, where they keep customer information files. Right now, each individual location has a LAN network but they are not connected to each other. The company would like to setup one central network. They want to be able to monitor and limit the use of the computers. This is because employees have been playing games and checking their personal e-mail when they should be working. The company wants to limit the web sites that each computer can access, and they also want to be able to change the settings from one central location. A networking company sent us a proposal about what they can do. They plan to setup NetScreen firewalls at each location. They will also install a program called SurfControl to monitor and limit the use of each computer. They are going to put everything on a Virtual Private Network. The only problem is that they are going to charge around $200,000 to do this. I think there has to be a less expensive way to setup the central network that my company wants to have. All of the computers will need Windows XP Professional to run the programs that my company uses. However, I was thinking about setting up a VPN by installing FreeBSD on some of the computers, and using them as the hardware for the network. I found some information about http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ipsec.html but I'm not really sure if it will be able to do what my company is trying to accomplish. Can anybody please give me any advice about this? Nobody at my company really knows that much about networking, so I would appreciate any advice that you could give me. Thank you.
  19. There are ways that you can do this without being annoying. Walking up to her everyday asking, "Will you go out with me? Will you go out with me?" will be very annoying. Make sure you don't do that. What you need to do is make her think, "Wow, what a sweet guy". You should compliment her every once in a while, but don't make it too obvious that you are complimenting her. Of course, always act polite. If you are going somewhere, and she is walking behind you, make sure you hold the door open for her. Little things like this will really count because most guys are so rude. The important thing is that now she knows how you really feel about her. If you can just figure out how to make her like you, she might even ask you out on a date. I already told you that this won't be easy. She doesn't sound like the type of girl that would jump into a relationship, which is actually a good thing. If it is really difficult for you to get her to be your girlfriend, it will also be very difficult for another guy to take her away from you. RedAlert, don't try to tell yourself that you wouldn't care if you never see this girl again. You know that you love this girl! Don't listen to anyone who tells you to let her go because you don't really love her. Some people are trying to tell you that your feelings aren't real because you don't know what love is. Don't listen to that! You know in your heart how you feel inside. I could sense your true feelings in your first post, and I think I understand exactly how you are feeling. Don't get discouraged, and don't give up. As long as this girl lives, she will never be "gone". Just keep trying because there will always be another day, and another chance.
  20. No, with Firefox it doesn't matter if you ever visited the site or not. It will still find the URL if you just type the name of the web site.
  21. Has anybody noticed that you usually don't need to type the URL when you are using Firefox? For example, you can just type "science forums" in the address bar, and it will take you to the Science Forums web site. It doesn't work for all web sites, but it will work for most of the ones that I tried. This feature also works in Internet Explorer, but you will need to name each site in your favorites first. For example, you could save the Science Forums web site in your favorites, and save it as "science". After that, you will just need to type "science" in the Internet Explorer address bar, and it will take you to the Science Forums web site.
  22. RedAlert, I believe that you were either hiding your feelings when you first started this thread, or you are hiding your feelings now. If this girl was so special to you, there is no way that you could be ready to forget about her after a few days. Don't get mad at the girl. Severian seems to think that it is wrong to tell a regular friend that you would like to start a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. That isn't wrong, because in many cases the girl should be happy to have a closer relationship with a good friend. You need to find out why the girl doesn't want a closer relationship. You should find out what you need to do to win her heart. You should never expect a girl to fall in love with you just because you love her. You need to prove to her that you are the type of guy that she can trust. If you are looking for a girl that will instantly become your girlfriend, then you aren't going to get a good girlfriend. You are going to end up with someone who will easily dump you for the next guy she sees. If you want a relationship built around trust, you need to find a girl that won't trust you until after you earn her trust. From what you've said, this girl sounds like someone that could be a great girlfriend for you. She is obviously a good person because you have been friends with her for so long. She sounds like somebody that you will be able to trust, once you earn her trust. If you are having difficulty getting her to be your girlfriend now, just think about how difficult it will be for another guy to take her away from you. Now, go prove to this girl how much you care about her. This isn't going to be an easy journey for you, but don't ever give up. It might take you days, weeks, months, or even years before you could even get the chance to go on a date with her. Even if she gets another boyfriend, just wait until the day that the two of you can be together. Whatever you do, don't get another girlfriend. This will just make her think that she doesn't mean that much to you. If she sees that you don't want to be with any girl except for her, she will eventually realize how much you care about her.
  23. Arguing with each other isn't going to help RedAlert. He should send her the poem in my last post. I'm sure it will work.
  24. You need to let her know how you feel about the meaning of a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. So many guys treat their girlfriends like crap. They just care about kissing and everything, while they don't really care about the girl's feelings. Your friend might think you are one of these guys. You need to let her know you aren't. Let me tell you how I feel about a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. It should be about two people who love and trust each other more than anybody else in the world. They should always try to get to know each other better, and want to spend every moment of their lives together. No matter how difficult or painful life might be, a truly happy couple will always have each other. I hope that is the type of boyfriend/girlfriend relationship you would want to have with her. Of course, it is ok for hugging and kissing, but remember the true meaning behind the relationship. If you find a way to tell her that you want a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship with a deep meaning, I’m sure that she would want to be with you. It might take a long time, but never give up. Just keep trying until you earn her trust. You might want to send her a poem that tells her how you feel and what type of a relationship you want. I’ve written poems that have won awards and have been published in books. Here is a poem I wrote that you can send her, and you can say that you wrote it. Here’s the poem: (Insert girl’s name), it seems like I have known you for so long. You have always been there for me. You have made my life worth living. You are someone that I can always trust. Friends come, and friends go. But you mean so much more to me. I wish I could find a way to tell you. You are the only one for me. I don’t care what you say to me. I just wish I could hear your sweet voice for the rest of my life. It doesn’t matter where life takes us. I just want to hold you in my arms forever. No matter what mistakes you make in your life. My everlasting love for you will never fade away. Whenever your life gets too painful to carry on, I will carry you while you cry in my arms. I just wanted to tell you how I feel. I hope you will understand what is on my mind. Even if you decide to never talk to me again. You will always be the girl in my heart.
