  1. Why would Microsoft ever do that? If they supported these things, their browser would look even better. How could anybody destroy the competition by lowering the quality of their own products? Bill Gates isn't stupid. He became the world's richest man, so he must know what he is doing. I'm sure that the majority of Internet users use the web. Most of them use the web with IE. I don't think anything is wrong with that. I support IE because it works with the web sites I need to access, not because they don't obey the standards. Bill Gates seems to have taken the throne. The W3C is a bunch of old people trying to regain their territory. They can try, but they fail because they don't understand the modern Internet. They don't understand how some of the "IE-only" commands work. This is because Microsoft keeps them a secret. This isn't the W3C being stupid, or Microsoft being mean. It is simply an intelligent business practice that keeps Microsoft at the top. Whether or not it is fair doesn't seem to concern Microsoft. The money keeps coming, so they are happy. In the meantime, most people use IE. Therefore, I need to "go with the flow" as a web site designer. I would avoid using elements that I know aren't compatible with non-IE browsers. However, my customers don't want to wait months for their web site while I try to fix bugs that won't even be a problem for most of their customers. Therefore, I am providing the best possible service at the best speed when I design my web sites and test them in IE. I didn't post a link to my site so everyone can see how close my web site follows the standards. In fact, a lot of that code was written by the web site design software I use. The point is that a really nice web site can be displayed in IE. I could have even added more elements to the web site, but that would have made it too slow for dial-up users. Could you please let me know what the site looks like? The way it looks in IE is how my web site is supposed to look. If it looks really bad in other browsers, please let me know if there are any simple ways to fix it. Thanks. I've never used the ActiveX ads on any of my pages. I was just curious about them because the advertisers pay a lot of money when I display them. Now I know that I should avoid them. I thought I have been supporting my opinions with real facts in this thread. For example, it is known that IE is the most popular browser. It is also known that most web sites display correctly in IE.
  2. The point wasn't that IE gained market share. I think the news behind this is that Firefox's growth may be slowing. If Firefox can only make 10-20% of the market share before slowing in growth, I can't imagine it ever winning the majority.
  3. I really don't know anything about ActiveX. However, advertisers pay a lot of money if I display them on my site. Here is the code for an ActiveX ad: <script language="JavaScript" src="http://www.paid-to-promote.com/active.php?zoneid=142236&uid=1&type=active" type="text/javascript"></script> Can you tell me why it requires ActiveX? Could it be any security risk to the visitors of my web site?
  4. This is bad for the owners of web sites who want to get paid.
  5. If ActiveX is required for important web sites, it would be an advantage to Internet Explorer. I don't know much about ActiveX being required for important features, but I do know that certain advertisements require ActiveX. If an advertiser tells me to put an ActiveX ad on one of my sites, I would get paid each time that ad is displayed. If somebody visits my site without ActiveX enabled, then I won't get paid for the ad.
  6. I just read a news article that says Firefox is losing market share, and IE is gaining market share. The article is on ComputerWorld's web site. http://www.computerworld.com/developmenttopics/websitemgmt/story/0,10801,103914,00.html
  7. It isn't a lie. My source is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer
  8. I am a professional web site designer, and I've made some very nice web sites that work with IE. I didn't spend very much time on my ghost web site. A web site design that I am very proud of is for my company. Check out the design at http://www.bluealan.com and prepare to be amazed. Of course, I don't know if it works right in other browsers besides IE.
  9. When compared to the number of IE users, yes. IE users make up the majority, so web sites should be designed with them in mind. Look at the stats in the image I posted. These stats are 100% real and come from several different types of web sites. I'm not saying that Microsoft was being fair by ignoring the standards. However, since most Internet users are IE users, web sites should be written for them. IE users never told Microsoft to ignore the standards. They are simply using the software, and they shouldn't be inconvenienced because of Microsoft's mistakes. This is because they are the majority. I haven't found a web site that doesn't work with IE except for a few that are trying to show the bugs in IE. I did know that. However, many of the creators of the web and Internet don't know anything about the modern Internet. I once had a teacher that was part of the team that created the original Internet for the Government. He retired, and hasn't used a computer since. Now, he doesn't even know how to get online with a newer computer. He was a really nice teacher, and he could really talk about protocols and everything. However, he didn't know anything about Internet Explorer. I researched ActiveX and read that Ebay requires it. That is a major web site.
  10. IE still has more users than all of the other browsers combined! Look at these stats from a few of the web sites that I manage. These are all real stats, and they were taken from a variety of web sites that I own. I own many web sites, and I'm a professional web site designer. These stats show an Internet marketing site, a poetry site, a ghost picture web site, a baseball web site, and my web site design company's site. Therefore, these stats should give you a good idea of the browsers that all different types of people are using.
  11. That does not matter. A browser isn't important if only a few people use it. Imagine a giant monster-truck chained to about 10 little go-carts. The monster-truck will win against all the go-carts in a game of tug-of-war. The web designers aren't trying to be nice, they are being smart. Why lose most of their visitors so they can follow some standards that work with about 10% of browsers? They certainly did a bad job accommodating the issue that their standards aren't compatible with the browser that most people use! Microsoft invented Internet Explorer. Now most people have chosen to use it. Why would a web designer drop IE compatibility just for the standards that only a few people think are important? It doesn't matter that IE is one browser. The important fact is the number of users that have it. Why can't you understand this? A web site designer can look at his statistics and say, "Ok, 85% of my visitors are using Internet Explorer. Now, 5% is using FireFox. Another 5% is using Netscape. 2.5% is using Safari. The other 2.5% is using SuperBrowser." If Internet Explorer does everything one way, and the rest of the browsers do things another way, the web site designer needs to be more concerned about how Internet Explorer does things. This is because most of his visitors are using Internet Explorer.
  12. I actually had to take the Algebra 1 exam three times before I could pass it... Math and Spanish exams were the only exams that I ever failed. Math is not my subject. I can barely count without a calculator. I guess all of my intelligence is reserved for programming computers and writing poetry.
  13. The standards need to be for the largest group of Internet users, not the 10% that use something other than IE. The Internet standards have absolutely no authority. They were supposed to be created to help the majority of Internet users. They might have been created to work with Netscape, which was the main browser a long time ago. Now IE is the main browser, so the standards need to be changed.
  14. Explorer isn't IE. IE is C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE and you can prove it by clicking on the file from My Computer. When you click on it, it opens IE.

    Infinity

What exactly is infinity? Isn't it just a term to describe a number that is beyond our calculation ability? Since the numbers go on forever, wouldn't it be impossible to have a value that is too big to be a number?
  16. Stop worrying about standards that don't mean anything. Any group of people can get together and pretend they live in a fantasy world and they can make life perfect. The truth is that standards don't mean anything on the Internet. They don't mean anything to web site users because most web sites don't contain elements that don't work with IE. They don't mean anything to web site developers because most users couldn't access elements that don't work with IE. If anybody creates standards, it needs to be Microsoft and only Microsoft. Then they can make sure their standards are compatible with what most people are using.
  17. How come everyone is saying that traveling at the speed of light will give you infinite mass? The speed of light is a number, so wouldn't your mass be a number? Wouldn't an infinite mass would require an infinite velocity?
  18. Why would you uninstall IE? There is no point. It won't cause any trouble with other browsers. Just to remind you that IE was the first browser to support CSS: How come nobody is pointing out the fact that IE had support for some things before the other browsers? I am a web site developer and I can make a very nice looking site that works fine with IE. What exactly can you do with FireFox that you can't do with IE? You made a post that just talked about Vista charging money about updates: That was your entire post. It had absolutely nothing to do with the topic. You never used it as an example to say anything about browsers. You just wanted to start another argument about operating systems. I agree. Microsoft already said they will be making major security updates for IE7. So, how can anyone say it will have the same security problems as IE6? Everyone that's used IE7 used a BETA version. It is incomplete and doesn't have all the security protection. That is why is has the same security holes as IE6. Of course, many security holes in IE6 can be fixed by downloading updates. If you have Windows, just install Service Pack 2.
  19. That is a huge problem with FireFox. I know tons of web sites that use Active-X. Many company databases that keep track of customer information online use Active-X. Now, how come everyone here seems to think it is ok for FireFox to get away with not being compatible with Active-X? However, everyone goes crazy over the fact that IE isn't compatible with things that most people have never heard of? Exactly. Who cares about the standards when designing a web site? Web site designers only need to make sure that their visitors can see their web site. Just make sure that IE users can see your site. Then if someone can't see your site, it is their responsibility to open IE because it should still be on their computer even after they install another browser. I have used several other browsers. I used FireFox for a little while. I had Netscape installed on my computer for over a year. I liked Netscape at first. I just got tired of certain web sites not working correctly, so I went back to IE. They make about $30 billion a year. Why did you feel the need to start talking about operating systems? It seems like you start talking about Linux vs Windows in every computer thread! STOP TALKING ABOUT OPERATING SYSTEMS!!!!!!! Exactly. Browsers and operating systems are completely different things. You can install different browsers on the same operating system. It really doesn't make sense to say that IE and Windows are the same. That would be like saying a Sony DVD player and a Sony telephone are the same thing. No. IE comes with Windows, but it isn't part of Windows. You can also install IE on a MAC computer. I'm sure that FireFox has more than three holes. There are just more people looking for holes in IE. The FireFox holes have yet to be discovered. Also, Microsoft seems quick at releasing patches. I've never heard the news say there is a security hole in IE without saying there is a patch available.
  20. I don't know what these "standards" are, but I have yet to find a real web site that doesn't work with IE. Yes, there are web sites that were designed just to show that IE doesn't follow "standards". These web sites contain elements that cause IE to crash. However, these elements are not on regular web sites. Someone could write a program that could make any computer crash. It is called a virus. Just because the computer crashes, doesn't mean it is a bad computer. What do you expect if you load a virus on a computer? I use IE, and I have no reason to abandon it. However, I did abandon Netscape and Firefox because I found too many web sites that didn't work with those browsers!
  21. They didn't drop the ball. Other companies just invented a new idea that IE hasn't had a chance to use yet. Bill Gates doesn't have psychic powers. You can't expect him to know what all the other companies are thinking before they release their product. I'm sure that Microsoft invented many ideas that were in IE before any other browser. Not only that, but many other features too. Are there any other browsers that can detect a phishing or scam site?
  22. Microsoft is releasing the next version of Internet Explorer soon. http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/internet/08/12/microsoft.browser.ap/index.html It will be really secure and also have some nice features.
