  1. Is that form for making suggestions to the Mozilla development team or just reporting bugs?
  2. Right, but what do they consider to be "Vista compatibility"? Do they mean just having the browser work properly with the operating system, or do they mean redesigning the interface?
  3. I'm not saying this only because of my opinion. Interfaces with a more organized menu bar will be the new standard in Windows Vista programs. Even though Windows Vista is not available to the public yet, Internet Explorer 7 has been released to the public. Since Internet Explorer has already adopted the new standard, Firefox needs to do the same if they wish to stay competitive. The reason many people, including myself, downloaded Firefox 1 was because it was more modern than IE6. It featured tabbed browsing and other features that made IE6 appear obsolete. Now, IE7 is making Firefox look obsolete. I believe that Firefox 2 was a huge mistake for Mozilla, and they are really going to have to play catch-up with Firefox 3. Firefox 3 should not just adopt the new standard, but they should improve it. Firefox 1 adopted the features of IE6 and they added tabbed browsing and extra security features. Now, IE7 has adopted the features of Firefox 1 and they added better interface. So Firefox not only needs to adopt the new interface, but they should be thinking about a new feature they can add to the browser. In a browser war, the goal is to stay one step ahead of the competition.
  4. Since I've become more familiar with the new interfaces on some of the Windows Vista programs, I would never want to go back to the old "File" "Edit" and the other old menu buttons. I often receive phone calls from people who have a question about their computer. If I'm not in front of a computer, I usually have to ask them to check under every menu for the option they are looking for. If they are using IE7, I just tell them to check under "Page" if it's related to the web page or I tell them to check under "Tools" if it's related to the browser. Other options, such as the printing options, are easy because they are all under the printer icon. If someone has a question about an option in Firefox 2, we usually have to go on a scavenger hunt to see which menu button they threw it under. Yes, it might take a while to get used to the new style of interfaces. I'm still having a little trouble getting used to the new Office 2007 applications. However, I'm sure people will prefer an organized interface once they get used to it. In the meantime, most of the programs will temporarily display the old options if you press the "alt" button.
  5. I've tested the new Firefox 2.0. I believe it loads web pages well, but the user interface looks very bad. It still has the old "File" and "Edit" toolbar buttons at the top. Look at the interfaces of Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7: Why did Firefox keep the old interface of IE6 and Firefox 1? None of the upcoming Windows Vista programs I've seen have the "File" and "Edit" toolbar buttons anymore. Firefox needs to update their interface by next year or they are going to appear very outdated.
  6. No, I dreamed that I was in a nice restaurant. I wasn't in any type of restaurant the previous day. In fact, I really can't think of any restaurant that looked like the one in my dream, although some of the decorations reminded me of Olive Garden. Back in high school, she was my best friend. I did try asking her out on a date, but she said no. No! If she did, I wouldn't be dating her!
  7. Wow, you are right! If I stare at it for a while on my LCD monitor, it appears to go from blue and navy stripes to all navy. When I blink my eyes, I can see the stripes again. I've never tried staring at it before. Of course, it is very late at night (actually early in the morning) and everything looks like an optical illusion at the moment.
  8. Here is IE7 on Windows XP: I wonder why it says "Mozilla/4.0"? I thought IE6 and earlier used trident and IE7 uses a completely new rendering engine. Looking at the logs, it looks like IE has said "Mozilla" since IE5.
  9. I was looking through one of my web site's logs, and it appears that Windows Vista sends out a lot more data in its GET command than Windows XP. Here is the information in a Windows XP IE6 GET command: Here is the information in a Windows XP Firefox GET command: Here is the information in a Windows Vista IE7 GET command: I understand the browser and operating system version information, but I don't have any idea what the rest of the information means. While a few extra pieces of data may not look like very much, do you think it will add up if a web site receives thousands of hits each day? How do you think this could affect bandwidth and log size once a larger number of people begin using Vista?
  10. Here is a picture of the background image I used on one of my web sites: It is supposed to be blue with navy stripes. I can see it very clearly on my LCD monitor, but it appears to be solid black on my other computer with a CRT monitor. The only way I can see it is if I turn the brightness on the monitor to almost 100%. I think this is strange, because other images do not appear too dark on my CRT monitor. What does your monitor show when you look at the picture I posted above?
  11. I think her body would release greenhouse gases as it decays. Anyway, I'm very concerned about global warming. Yet, I'm not really sure how much I can do about it. There aren't any bike paths in my area, and college is about 20 miles away, so I must drive everyday. Also, I keep three computers running at the same time whenever I'm at home. I can actually use two at the same time, and I usually have the third one doing something automated. I run a lot of web sites, design a lot of programs, and post in a lot of forums. I need lots of computing power! I do try to conserve energy whenever possible. I turn off lights when I'm not in the room. I also turn off other electrical appliances when I'm not using them.
  12. I do make my passwords complex. I usually combine letters and numbers, and I sometimes forget my passwords. I'm more concerned about somebody breaking into my database and taking the passwords from there. They are all encrypted, so I only see a long string like "b1c1539fc19d323df2af1935c595fb71". Of course, that isn't an actual encrypted password, it's just an example of what one looks like. Do you think the encrypted passwords are secure?
  13. There didn't seem to be any unusual activity in the admin pages, so I don't think the person was successful and hacking in. Do you think they could possibly get my password? I know that all passwords are encrypted before being placed in the forum's MySQL database. I'm glad to hear this. My main concern was that one of the SFN moderators was against my forum, so he or she decided to delete the thread and attempt to hack into the forum. YT certaintly does not seem like the type of person who would harm another web site, so it does not appear that any of the mods are abusing their power. Yes, I would expect occasional problems from people who protest the forum. That's why I backup the forum's database regularly. In most cases, I would simply ignore a hacking attempt like this or just post a warning in my forum. My greatest concern was that a SFN mod was abusing his or her power. If that was true, I thought it would be something that the other mods should know about. LOL... I already checked, and it doesn't appear to be a registered member of my forum. Thanks Cap'n, that's good to know. I still wonder where this person came from. None of the search engines appear to have indexed the site yet, so it must have been somebody who saw a banner ad for my site.
  14. I'm not sure. Here is what I've been reading: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/origin.html Actually, my novel is supposed to be about a lost book that was written by Charles Darwin. That's why I thought Origin of Species would be the best book to read.
  15. I do not want to accuse anybody of doing anything wrong, but I'm getting the impression that somebody here is up to no good. I'm hoping that one of the honest moderators of SFN will see this thread and help figure out what is really going on. Somebody has been trying to hack into my forum today. He or she was rapidly making password reset requests for my administrator account. I received over 20 notifications of these requests in my e-mail. Here is a screenshot of my inbox: At the same time, that person was attempting to login the forum using my username and different passwords. Somebody was obviously really trying to break into my forum's administrator account. That person's IP address was recorded in my forum's error log. It shows that the person is from the UK. Therefore, I am almost positive that this person is a member of SFN. I have done some advertising on other web sites, but my traffic stats show that almost all of those visitors are from the USA. The only UK visitors I see were from SFN. I wasn't too concerned about this at first. I just made a warning post about it in my own forum. However, then the thread on SFN about my forum disappeared without any notice. When there is a legitimate reason to close a thread, a moderator usually just locks it. If it has to be deleted because of inappropriate conduct, a private message is usually sent to the members involved in the thread. However, that thread seems to have disappeared without a trace. If an honest moderator did delete that thread for a good reason, then I apologize for bringing up this issue. However, I wonder if the moderator who deleted my thread could be the same person who has been trying to hack into my forum. I have been a member of SFN for a long time, and I know that most of the moderators are good people. If one of the moderators is abusing his or her power, I'm sure the others would want to know about it. I would also like to know why somebody is trying to attack my forum. I thought about posting the attacker's IP address in this thread, but I'm not sure if that would be the right thing to do. If an honest moderator wants to help me, please PM me and I will send the moderator the IP address. I hope we can figure out what is going on here.
  16. What makes you think that? I was actually reading Charles Darwin's Origin of Species while writing this so I could make the writing style very similar. I had intended this to be a fun game, not anything serious.
  17. Yes, I believe I am good at using us-en and en-en. I've been writing a novel, and one of the chapters is supposed to be written by someone from England in the 1800's. It is more challenging than you might think. Here is a paragraph from my novel when I'm supposed to be from England: "When I was in my younger years, I was quite orthodox. It had never occurred to me that The Bible, a book about morality, could possibly present falsehood to the world. It was, or so I thought, the flawless Word of God. I was quite content with this belief, and even had the desire to become a priest. I was told that the Lord was very loving, caring, and absolutely perfect. I never had any personal encounters with the Lord, but I had no reason to believe he was not as Christian leaders claimed. Although I had endured many hardships in my life, I had not yet been exposed to the true colours of this world. I had witnessed pain and death throughout my life, but I had never experienced their true meanings yet. Unfortunately, something very horrible was about to happen in my life. Something that is so inconceivable and dreadful that it pains me greatly just to think about it." What makes you say that? I think the "girls" in my first post have very dynamic personalities.
  18. In another thread, somebody suggested that I bring more visitors to my forum by registering as multiple users and having them talk to and argue with each other. Somebody else said I probably wouldnt be able to accomplish that because the writing styles and beliefs of my users would be too similar. I think it would be fun to see how many different personalities all of us can try to be. Ill write a few paragraphs, and pretend to be people who are completely different from me. Here I will try to be a teenage girl talking to another girl about a boyfriend… Hey girl, whats up? Jason and I had the best time last weekend! We went to the movies and then he took me out to dinner. Hes the sweetest guy I ever met, and he acts like such a gentleman. I was never really happy with any of my old boyfriends but it feels different this time. I think he might be the right guy!!! I mean, he treats me so good. I know he actually cares about me. My parents also like him, which is awesome! I just love him so much!!! Well, Ill talk to ya later! Here I will try to be a guy writing a note to a girl he likes… Hi Rebecca, how was your weekend? I hope youre not still upset about Bill. You know there are plenty of other guys out there. Youre a very beautiful girl and you deserve a guy who treats you with respect. Youre such a nice girl, so I know you can find someone. Do you think you would like to go somewhere with me this weekend? Maybe we can see a movie or something. I just wanted you to know that I really like you. If you dont want to go out with me, thats ok. I just want you to be happy. Here was my attempt to be a fundamental Christian in the other thread… Hello. I just saw this site for the first time, and I must say that your forum saddens me greatly. It appears that you do not know the love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. You would favor the words of men instead of the Word of God, and that is a very tragic thing. My fellow Christians and I share a great concern for your soul not only in this life, but also the next. Please, do not fall into the temptation of Satan. He has planted false evidence in this world to make people believe the Word of God is false. The truth is that God is very real, and he loves you very much. Do not fall for the scheme that Satan calls "science". Always put your trust in The Bible and pray for God to lead you through your life. God will always be there for you because he created you, and because he loves you. So, do you think I did a good job with my attempts at various personalities? Lets see how many different personalities you can try to be!
  19. When working inside a TV or monitor, don't ever cut the main internal wire (often red with a high-voltage warning label) with a pair of scissors. I learned from experience that this wire is still charged even after having the TV or monitor unplugged for a few months.
  20. Yes, SFN seems to be ranking #1 again for "science forums". I really can't think of any way to explain this. Google has always ranked my sites in weird random orders, no matter what I do. I can usually get a good rank on Yahoo, AOL, MSN, or Live, but Google always seems to do whatever it wants. I think this is very annoying, even though I normally use Google when I'm searching for something. I do like the fact that they are really careful about keeping search data confidential. Other search engines give out this information to different companies and people. AOL accidentally leaked out their search data to the general public, and some web sites still have this information posted for anyone to download. Here's a news article about it: http://www.techweb.com/wire/security/191801184
  21. This makes me wonder how well the bestseller list really shows how many people are reading a specific book. The main audience of Richard Dawkin's book is probably academic and scientific people. These people are more likely to make frequent visits to a library than the general public. Perhaps a large number of people reading this book are not actually buying it. While the book is selling quite well, do you think more people are reading it than the list says? I think Sam Harris makes some good points in his books. I know what link you are talking about, and I agree that the article by itself is too harsh towards Christians. However, that article just picked out the most extreme statements of the book, without providing the sections that explain his reasons behind making those statements. I suggest that people read Sam Harris's entire book "Letter to a Christian Nation" instead of just that article.
  22. It was interesting to see how some of my other family members reacted to my decision to stop attending church. My Grandmother and one of my Aunts went to church with me every Sunday. Both of them said it was my decision to make, and they respect my decision.
  23. Well, I was avoiding all contact with other people for a little while. However, that didn't last too long because I started feeling a little lonely. I do have occasional conversations with other people in college, so I'm not a complete hermit now. I also e-mailed my best friend from high school, and she replied. She seems to be doing well and enjoying all of her classes. It was nice to hear from her again. Anyway, I'm not really sure what you mean when you say I've developed over the past 6 months. I still spend most of my time in my bedroom using my computer. I guess a main difference over the past year is my behavior in these forums. I used to criticize a lot of people here instead of listening to what they had to say. Now, I feel like I fit in better. In fact, the people in this forum seem to understand my opinions better than the people I know in real life. I wasn't talking about my own opinion about people with religious beliefs. I was actually talking about what "religion" seems to mean in society. Many people might say religion is a belief in something that can't be scientifically proven. However, it seems like millions of people must share a belief in something supernatural before it becomes an acceptable religion. If millions of people believe a man named Jesus rose from the dead, then it's considered to be a perfectly acceptable belief in society. However, if one person saw his deceased grandparent climbing out of a grave, that person would likely be considered insane if he could not prove what he saw. What I'm trying to say is that today's religions are acceptable only because they are widely believed. If they were not widely believed in society, the few people who believe in those religions would be considered insane. This has nothing to do with my opinion about religion. It's just the way society seems to be.
  24. I don't think it's right to call people who believe in God "idiots" or insult them just to be mean. However, they should have to provide evidence of why they believe that. What I really don't understand is how somebody who talks to an imaginary friend might end up in a mental institution, while it is perfectly acceptable to pray to God without providing any evidence of his existence. Think about it this way. People who believe in a strict translation of The Bible say that the universe is only around 10,000 years old, while there is enough scientific evidence to prove otherwise. It seems perfectly reasonable to suggest that these people need psychiatric help if you are really sincere about it, and not just making fun of them. If fundamental Christianity was only a small minority, it would be absolutely absurd to suggest that the universe is only 10,000 years old. This minority of Christians would be asked to explain dinosaur fossils, the ability to see objects that are billions of light-years away, and all the other evidence that suggests an older universe. The only reason fundamental Christians aren't forced to explain any of this is because they are not a small minority. If the majority of the population were atheists, a Christian would have to do a lot of explaining. If a Christian started praying in public, people would ask him who he was talking to. If the Christian said that he was praying to God, he would be expected to give some evidence of God's existence. Otherwise, he would likely be treated the same way as someone who talks to an imaginary friend. My whole point here is that your religion will only be accepted if it's a major part of society, and I don't consider this to be true freedom of religion. If you decided to start talking to your own god, people will think you are crazy. If we really had freedom of religion in society, people wouldn't be put into mental institutions for hearing voices in their heads, or speaking to shadows on the wall. If we expected everyone to provide evidence for their beliefs, it would be acceptable to say that Christians need psychiatric help unless they could provide scientific evidence for their beliefs.
  25. I just recently made some decisions regarding my own religion, so I don't think I should state my own opinion yet. However, Richard Dawkins believes that religion is an enemy to science. He says that people often ignore obvious scientific evidence simply because their religion tells them to. This is simply an opinion of someone else, but I can't find any reason to disagree with it. Now, this is interesting. If you really did witness these events, what made you come to the conclusion that it was the God of the Christian Bible? How do you know it wasn't Allah, one of the gods from Hinduism, or even a god who has chosen to keep himself hidden from us?
