Surely, if a god is compatible with reality then it is compatible with scientific knowledge (which is based on reality). If your god tells you that the Earth is flat then your god is not compatible with science because it is wrong. But if your god tells you her favourite ice cream is stracciatella then can't really be incompatible with science.

I think they only have minute amounts of ions dissolved from rocks. Over millions of years this has been concentrated in the oceans (as it has nowhere else to go). http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/whysalty.html

That has nothing to do with evidence. Please provide some evidence to support this claim.
-
What does that mean? "Test statements on faith"? Please provide some evidence to support this claim.
-
So, rather like science, you test their statement against the evidence. You don't just accept it on faith.
-
Please provide some evidence to support this claim. All the evidence I am aware of indicates that you are lying. (Is that OK with your god?)
-
Science isn't elevated above nature. It is ruled by, limited by, and tested against nature. Science is subservient to and dependent upon nature.
-
Science doesn't confuse evidence and proof. You do. And people have done this. Some things in the bible appear to be true and some seem to be contradicted by facts. What his adherents believe is irrelevant. If you want to claim this, you need evidence.
-
That really doesn't make much sense (and doesn't seem to be relevant to the point). If someone tells you something you know to be a lie, that is because you have external evidence. That has nothing to do with whether they believe what they say or whether you believe what they say. Belief is not evidence. So the only way to know if they are correct when they say that is to look at the evidence. So, if you can tell us where he lives, show us his ID card or passport, get him to appear on TV, then there might be some evidence. But the fact you believe it is true does not make it true.
-
But those people believed they were doing the right and wise thing based on their faith. How do you tell the difference between "good faith" and "wrong faith"? (Science, is one way, of course.) What does adding "correctly and certainly" change? Nothing. If you know the method is unreliable then you know its results can't be trusted. And that isn't what that verse from the Bible says. Although it is a good lesson in using selection and evolution to create better fruit trees.

I think it would be considered off-topic for this thread. But if you take Genesis to be literally true, for example, then that is contradicted by the fossil record, by genetics, by cosmology and several other lines of evidence. Not really, no. Unless you are going to be very sloppy with words (to the extent of changing their meaning). How is that relevant? There are people who believe the world is flat, not just locally but completely. They are clearly wrong. Their beliefs don't match reality.
-
So what? There is no reason to invent a conflict between them. Science and religion don't really have any connection or grounds for conflict. The things that religion deals with (gods, the supernatural, etc) have nothing to do with science and science has nothing to say about them. Science investigates the natural world and attempts to understand it. Unless your beliefs are contradicted by reality (such as people who believe the Earth is flat) then there should be no reason for conflict between your beliefs and science, because science just explores the real world.
-
Why do religious people keep trying to invent a conflict between belief and science?
-
Quite. I think it is important to stress that science doesn't dismiss those things because they are gods or whatever. But because there is not, and probably cannot be, objective evidence for them. I'm not sure why this is a problem for people of faith. If you believe in God, why would you need science to validate that?

Of course I haven't. What a stupid and irrelevant comment. You have shown no evidence of that. You don't appear to have even a basic understanding of science or the scientific method. -

Nonsense. I think of something infinitely interesting and productive that constantly tells us new and surprising things. I just have no time for people who prefer to make up their own stories rather than making any effort to learn. Your laziness and arrogance is offensive to anyone who has actually studied and done science. -

To put it as politely as I can, that is complete and utter hogwash, nonsense and crap. Science has never progressed by people making up stupid stories with no basis in reality. Science works because people learn a lot about the subject, then make rigorous and detailed observations of the world about them, use these to build models. Then they test those models, discarding the the ones that don't work. You have done NONE of those things. -

No, it just means you are making stuff up while making it clear you are totally ignorant of basic science and, more importantly, of the scientific method. Science does not progress by people making up fairy stories. Please go and find another forum where they are happy to listen to your drivel. -
Your post is so confused, it is hard to know how to reply... I don't see any reason why anyone should discard their faith on the basis of science. However, when the faith contradicts reality, then they have a choice to make. I have heard some people say that if reality contradicts their holy book, then it is reality that is wrong. Personally, I think that insane. But it is their choice. I'm sure there are plenty of examples of people's faith being enriching and "working" for them. So what? That is evidence of nothing other than the fact that faith can be helpful to some people. But I think we know that already. In science, there isn't really any such thing as proof. But if they believe, with all their heart, that the Earth is flat (and that enriches their lives) it doesn't change the fact that the Earth is an oblate spheroid.

What people believe is not evidence.

You are right and he is very obviously wrong. From long and painful experience, I can tell you that there is no point arguing with such people. All you can do is "walk away" - tell him you are too busy to take on more work or something. You might think that you could just take his money and build what he wants and let him find out it doesn't work. I suspect you would be getting yourself into a world of pain. He will insist that it doesn't work because you have built it wrong (or even that you have sabotaged it at the request of "big oil") and may refuse to pay, threaten legal action, etc. Get out while you still can!

There are basically tidal forces. Yes, you are in free fall but one end is free falling "faster" than the other.
