The formation of a black hole requires a (spherical) concentration of mass in otherwise empty space. A homogeneous distribution of mass will not form a black hole.

How do you know that? There are plenty of functions which go from finite to infinite values in finite time. Maybe it was always infinite?

The conclusion is not based on relativity of simultaneity, rather relativity of simultaneity is a result of the theory. That is not how simultaneity is defined. It does not depend on relative position but relative velocity. I thought he defined it rather clearly. Because it is a mathematical theory, you can calculate to as many significant digits as you wish.

That sounds plausible. I haven't come across this before. I sounds like a reference to this research: https://public.nrao.edu/news/pressreleases/galaxy-magnetic-field "Astronomers making a detailed, multi-telescope study of a nearby galaxy have discovered a magnetic field coiled around the galaxy's main spiral arm. The discovery, they said, helps explain how galactic spiral arms are formed. The same study also shows how gas can be funneled inward toward the galaxy's center, which possibly hosts a black hole." So, even if the magnetic fields have a role in the formation of the spiral arms, this is quite different from the role of dark matter, which is related to the orbital speed of stars and dust at various distances from the centre. This is independent of the structure of the arms. And is also required to explain the relative motion of galaxy clusters.

Citation needed. Citation needed. Also: off topic.

Hawking radiation is inversely proportional to mass and is insignificant except for very small black holes (that probably don't exists). But another factor is that the massive amounts of energy released as matter falls towards the black hole gets heated up (by friction and complex interactions between the plasma and electric fields generated) means that a lot of the matter gets blasted away before it falls in. I seem to remember seeing that only a small fraction of the matter that encounters the environment of a black hole actually reaches the event horiizon.

Natural Climate Change - Can someone debunk this?
Strange replied to JohnS's topic in Climate Science
Ironic as your posts seem to be purely based on political opinion rather than any science. -
The difference is that there are multiple lines of evidence for dark matter. We can build different models and test them against observation, eliminate the ones that don't work, strengthen the ones that do and so on.In other words, it is quantitative science. Your "finger of God" is a figment of your imagination. There is nothing that can be measured and nothing that can be modelled scientifically. There are no effects that require God. You just choose to invoke Her as an explanation. I think unicorns work better.

You got me!

True. But the "big bang" is still continuing and I think the universe would be considered quite large, by now.

Ebola outbreak in US...unneccssary scare?
Strange replied to Elite Engineer's topic in Microbiology and Immunology
None of which have had any recent cases of Ebola. So he is therefore not a risk either. She is not contagious. It is not a new aspect of the disease, as the news reports about her case make clear. So I suppose you are terrified of being trampled by a unicorn, as well. -
Scientific testing (split from goal of science)
Strange replied to Reg Prescott's topic in General Philosophy
I think he is just pretending not to understand, "for the craic". -
Most theories do. It is the whole universe! True. You could call it the Lambda-CDM model.

Scientific testing (split from goal of science)

Nice to see you confirming that it is we who told you that first. -
Experiments are not done randomly to try and find unknown things. See posts 12, 13 and 23. See post 7 and: http://lappweb.in2p3.fr/neutrinos/anunivers.html About 100 per cm3. Which is hardly "solid"; a pretty good vacuum, in fact.

How did only the offspring of mitochondrial Eve survive until 2015?
Strange replied to trickybilly's topic in Genetics
Because if you go back further then Eve, Doris and Sam will have a common female ancestor. -
Relativity of simultaneity in motionless frame and factor of motion.
Strange replied to DimaMazin's topic in Speculations
That is the only thing you have said that I understood. It also seems to be factually correct. -
Ebola outbreak in US...unneccssary scare?
Strange replied to Elite Engineer's topic in Microbiology and Immunology
Your comments are offensive, ignorant, stupid, paranoid and generally unwarranted. From the BBC article: "But there are now so many survivors in West Africa - around 13,000 - that if there was a major risk then we would know about it." Do you have any evidence that many people from the countries where Ebola was a problem are making their way to Europe? Or are you just going to keep repeating idiotically ignorant assertions? As you can't provide a source, I don't see any reason not to assume it is another of your made-up "facts". But the text you quote says "several" not thousands or many. And as that was while the epidemic was at its height, they have either been found and treated or they didn't have the disease. You have provided no evidence "many" previously infected people have come to Europe. Also, because they are previously infected, they pose no significant risk. I thought that you recently said you were leaving this forum. Please do. -
Scientific testing (split from goal of science)
Strange replied to Reg Prescott's topic in General Philosophy
Once again, it is not very clear what you mean. Science is a "practical" endeavour in that it relies on testing models against observation. Philosophy does not create models and then test them against observation. If it did, it would be science not philosophy. Glad to see that you have finally moved to a more reasonable (realistic, if you like) position. He didn't declare you bogus. You need to read more carefully. (And also stop assuming that every disagreement is a personal attack.) Yeah. Terrified. He is not in the least bit anonymous. It would take about 10 seconds to find his full name, where he works, his (occasionally amusing) twitter feed, etc.
