As I mentioned in another post, Fe3O4 (magnetite) will not form under ambient conditions and is therefore not a part of this "rust". It requires high temps and a less oxidising environment than our atmosphere. I'm also fairly certain that it is very hard to form straight Fe(II) oxide, as it has a tendency oxidise quickly to Fe(III) oxides. So that leaves mainly Fe2O3. What most of the posters here have missed is that many of these oxides are hydrated to form things such as goethite and its polymorphs (FeOOH), as well as other amorphous hydrates.

TIME Details a Guantanamo intelligence gathering case study

Holding anyone against their will' date=' for an indefinite period, without charge, [b']is abuse[/b] and the USA and its allies should be ashamed of themselves. Whether or not the illegally held detainees are tortured is beside the point, it is is already a violation of human rights. You can be damn sure that if an American was held without charge for an indefinite period there would be an uproar. If these people are guilty, why have some of them been held for nearly 4 years without charge? It really is disgraceful behaviour, something you'd expect in communist China, or, dare I say it, in Iraq under Saddam Hussein. I suspect it is attitudes like yours that makes the USA hated or disliked by the majority of the world, and why some of us laugh uncontrollably when we hear your leaders saying that the USA is the leader in promoting peace, freedom and human rights. -

Almost correct, you will get sodium aluminium hydroxide. If this was then heated to drive off two molecules of water you would get sodium aluminate. The reason that aluminium dissolves at high pH's (ie sodium hydroxide) is the anomalous stability of the Al(OH)4- ion under these conditions. This is the basis of the Bayer process, discovered in 1893, which allows aluminium to be extracted from its ores. Basically the aluminium containing ore is treated with NaOH, the aluminium dissolves, and the waste (usually iron oxides) is left behind. The pH is then dropped again and the aluminium precipitates out as Al(OH)3.

For those of you who can remember, I think juslikecandi and WillowTree would get on swimmingly!

Slithers of glass in my eye, very unpleasant. When I was 7 I had a full size pane of glass broken over my head (long story). Anyway, spent 12 hours in hospital while they removed the glass from my eyes and lips and stiched my forehead!! -
I would have to say that 4 or 5 of my top ten songs of all time come from RADIOHEAD. Not many people appreciate how brilliant they actually are!! (they are usually the same people who like Good Charlotte or Avril Lavigne)

Government deports citizen as illegal immigrant.
Tetrahedrite replied to husmusen's topic in Politics
I heard this morning that the woman in question has been found by the ABC's Lateline program in a remote convent in the Philipines. It took the Lateline program a couple of days to do what the Australian government couldn't (or didn't) do in two years. The immigration minister Amanda Vanstone this morning made a cowardly attacked the priest who recognised her for not coming forward to the immigration department two days earlier (trying to shift the blame). In reply the priest has made the comment that he thinks that the government knew where she was the whole time! The plot thickens!! (it's been building for a long time over a lot of issues, but I'm finally getting so angry at this government that I want to scream. If only the rest of the population would wake up to itself ) -

It is disgusting. I am not going to mince my words here....... Anyone who voted for the slime that is Howard's Liberal party and knew of the government's immigration policy and policy on illegal detention of asylum seekers is complicit in this poor woman's (possible) death. They are all also complicit in the almost torturous treatment of Cornelia Rau. People need to wake up to themselves and stop believing the lies fed to them by this government, and stop selfishly thinking only about their own bottom line without any social conscience what so ever. It makes me sick to think that my fellow Australians are so self absorbed that they can't sympathise with the plight of these people. The more Australia aligns itself with the USA (ie the more conservative we become), the more things like this will happen. It is a real shame. We were once considered the lucky country -
Who was the greatest scientist or inventor that ever lived ?

The Bragg father and son duo, discovery of x-ray diffraction and its ability to define structures has been incredibly important to all of the basic fields of science, chemistry, biology, geology, physics and many more. -

It is also the most intelligent city in the US! -
I have a particular liking for arsenic, probably because it has been my research topic for the last 3 years. I also particularly like molybdenum.

Must be different in the US. We study various bleach brands (at least five of them) as a part of the 1st year undergraduate chemistry course. Not one of them contains calcium in any way. The US musn't have as big a problem with hard water as we do here.
-
And I will disagree with you..... most bleach brands that I know of contain sodium salts, not calcium. Calcium forms pptes with too many things found in natural waters to be used as a counter ion.

Global free trade does not and cannot work. Only when Americans are willing to work for 12 dollars a week will free trade work. As a seperate point, the US imposes tariffs on nearly all of Australia's primary exports, so it can't really call itself a leader in free trade.

Good 'scientific' movies (new and old are welcome)

Contact wasn't bad, some big ethical questions, and it sticks it up the fundamentalists (which makes it extra-good!). Cube and Sphere also come to mind. As for movies already mentioned Planet of the Apes and Gattaca would have to be my favourites -
No, they wouldn't have refered to the pope as ultra liberal, they would have refered to him as sensible!
-
This probably wouldn't work. All you would do is form millions of tiny ice crystals, which would almost certainly melt before they hit the ground. Sorry to rain on your parade
-
This definitely will not work. The theory is almost correct. Unfortunately, sodium is one of those annoying metals that tends to release hydrogen and explode when placed in contact with water! So instead of forming pure sodium you will form sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas (theoretically). You are best to stick to the normal metals like Cu, Zn, Pb etc.

Ahh, but this is not a chemical equilibrium, it is purely physical. You cannot have a Ksp for this reaction. In catalysis, for example, you reform the catalyst at the end of the reaction. This definitely does not mean that the catalyst did not undergo any chemical reaction, and in fact we know thew opposite is true.
