Yes, the red ink the printer jets onto the page will absorb light in the blue and green range. Most colour we use in dyes are to do with transition metal complexes. A transition metal is, by definition, an element which has an incomplete D subshell in at least one of its ions. a complex ion is a central metal ion surrounded by ligands (negative ions or polar molecules). In an isolated transition metal, all 5 D orbitals are degenerate. however, when ligands approach this ion the orbitals are split. the difference in energy between these orbitals is known as the crystal field strength. this means if radiation of the correct energy is absorbed there will be a d > d transition. in some cases the crystal field strength will correspond to light in the visible region (as E = hf) so this particular transition metal complex will appear coloured. If that went over your head dont worry, ignore the last two paragraphs.

no, light from a source will hit the paper and depending on what it hits, certain parts of the spectrum will be absorbed. for exampe purple ink appears purple because green light is absorbed, meaning the resulting red and blue parts of the spectrum combine to give purple. the same thing happens when you shine light through a sample, you'll get an absorption spectra. in this case the colour absorbed corresponds to the energy difference between the electron energy levels, as before E = hf

You cant heat the stuff? Are you doing this in your bathroom or something? Whenever ive used mercuric salts before in decomposition experiments its been inside a fume cupboard. Mercury is very low in the reactivity series, silver gold and platinum are below it so any other metal should be able to reduce it. I would think youd have to carry out further purification steps (depending on just how pure you want it of course).

More simple than an electron transition to a lower energy shell resulting in the emission of a photon? This is basic physics and underlines the phenonomen of emission and absorption spectra. What is the mathematic principle behind your model? Max Planck among others (James Maxwell etc) are responsible for many modern theories on the nature of electron shells and affiliated EM radiation phenonomen.

Sorry you've lost me, what structure? the structure of copper? And on a side note I would contest the idea your model is simpler - I was taught the model i stated as a 16 year old and had no trouble understanding it, nor did any of my classmates (bar a few knuckle-dragging degenerates). Id say thats a pretty good indication of a simplistic model - it doesnt even mention the nucleus of an atom.

A combination of uzbek-ised english and some wierd physics has left me confused. what precisely is wrong with the following model - an electron undergoes excitation , and when the electron moves back to a lower energy level it emits a photon. that photon will have energy E, exactly equal to the difference in energy levels of the two electron shells the electron moved between. the photon with energy E also has a frequency f determined by E =hf. this is the reason why hydrogen emits light in bands of wavelengths - the lyman series of wavelengths is produced when electrons fall from any energy level at all to n=1. balmer n=2, paschen n=3 etc. is someone trying to say this simplistic, respected and proven model is not correct?

I dont know very much astronomy apart from the basics but surely the moon will appear in exactly the position, red or not, that it was always going to appear in. i would have presumed anyone with a basic knowledge of astronomy (ie not me) would be able to use charts to calculate the exact positions and times the moon is visible from a certain place on earth based on its orbital path so how can adam claim this is not the moon? thats like claiming when the sun rises at 6.30 its actually a massive flaming meteor coming for earth because its a large bright disk in the sky, regardless of the fact the sun has a habit of rising at that time of the day.

One thing i would say is that in more and more schools, pupils are being taught how to pass an exam rather than learn a subject. Dont need to learn the concept, just memorise this effect/ bunch of figures/sentence. thats my experience of science subjects in senior school anyway. In arts subjects pupils are encouraged to be creative, thats the whole point. what happened in your school? i happen to go to a school which has a very open minded intelligent person as the head of the art department. in their final year pupils are given a carte blanche to make a folio of anything they really want, sculpture, many forms of painting etc. surely this is creativity?

He didnt seem particularly fazed or bothered about the fact that there would be massive and catastrophic effects on life on the planet, just proud he thought it was going to happen and no one believed him. around the last eclipse there was a pagan monk in somerset who sold all his belongings and said to goodbye to his family because he was so sure massive storms would ravish the earth - he at least was confident enough in his beliefs, wrong or not, to take the action that would seem appropriate. he drifted into the irish sea in a dingy to meet his destiny then presumably sailed to land when nothing happened... i have a lot more respect for him than adam who doesnt even defend blatantly wrong dates, respond to valid arguments or take notice of glaring omissions and presumptions in his tinpot pseudoscience.

My last ever school exams are on mon 19th may and friday 23 may. theres also economics on 5th june but i care so little about that it hardly counts. then on june 7th im off round the greek islands for a fortnight of booze and sun. as peter kay would say, HAVE IT!!!

SiC doesnt occur in molecular form, it exists as a giant covalent network and is stacked in a manner similar to diamond - tetrahedra of carbon and silicon. it has other stacking arrangements (hundreds) but this is the most basic and common arrangement. Carbon doesnt form quadruple bonds to my knowledge.

smacking children isnt an 'evil' thing in any context; the law would have no trouble differentiating between a father who actually injures his child and a father who disciplines his child when they dont respond to verbal warnings. parents should have the right to exercise their right to raise the child as they see fit, not a national guideline written by over protective, over liberal and overly vocal lobbyists.

Physical abuse and smacking are two different things. I was smacked and i dont have a discipline problem either; if my parents didnt smack me maybe i would have a problem or maybe I wouldnt. Smacking isnt overly authoritarian on behalf of the parents, parents can smack and still be liberal and caring people. In Britain a few months ago a man was jailed for giving his daughter a black eye when she screamed and cried at the dentist and he was rightly punished. Thats different to giving a wailing disobediant child a short sharp smack. if little timmy walks into a room and throws other childrens' toys around then hits someone smaller than him then I say little timmy and a slap are approaching each other at high speed. A burnt hand teaches fire best. I dont agree with a ban on smacking children, its the nanny state telling parents how best to raise their children.

I just recently measured the wavelength of sodium light by Newton's Rings for a physics investigation, turned out to be more accurate than I thought as well. I managed to get it within 2 nm of the accepted value, 589 nm. Has anyone else used this method and what kind of value did they get?

Go on then, which terpene floats your boat? limonene has a nice citrusy smell, thats my preferred terpene. although carvone has a that whole mint thing going on, two good monoterpenes there.
