  1. From a personal view, the talent is better in chemistry lectures than physics lectures. But thats not the reason im doing a chemistry degree, honest.
  2. The 1000th member? Out of interest, who is technically the first member?
  3. Im 6 foot 4. Try and belittle me. just try it.
  4. I had a question about optical isomers and found quite a good community. In terms of actually finding the site, I typed in 'science forum' into google and this site looked the best of the first 5 or so results. All priase mighty google :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship:
  5. Everything? That would be everything EXCEPT topics found in biology, chemistry and any other science, such as psychology. Dictionary.com describes the two as: Chemistry - The science of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter, especially of atomic and molecular systems. The composition, structure, properties, and reactions of a substance. Physics - (used with a sing. verb) The science of matter and energy and of interactions between the two, grouped in traditional fields such as acoustics, optics, mechanics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism, as well as in modern extensions including atomic and nuclear physics, cryogenics, solid-state physics, particle physics, and plasma physics. (used with a pl. verb) Physical properties, interactions, processes, or laws: the physics of supersonic flight. (used with a sing. verb) Archaic. The study of the natural or material world and phenomena; natural philosophy. To say Chemistry is a subset of physics is just belittleing chemistry which is hardly surprising coming from a physicist
  6. Yeah, organic chemistry can be really interesting but I really find the more complex aspects of carbohydrate chemistry hard to fathom. Perhaps I just need a decent lecturer to point out the finer points but most of the stuff goes right over my head
  7. Of course it would be useful to remember that a methyl group is CH3, while the compound methane is CH4. Thus the actual equation should be as follows. CH4 + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O You need to balance this. For reference, the numbers in front of the compounds are referred to as 'stoichometric coefficients' (sp?) but thats pretty esoteric knowledge. In any case, looking at the equation, the number of carbons are balanced on both sides at 1. So you should leave the CH4 and CO2 alone if you can. Put a 2 in front of the H2O to balance the hydrogen atoms, making that 4 on each side. CH4 + O2 ---> CO2 + 2 H2O The only remaining unbalanced thing is oxygen. You have 2 atoms on the left and 4 on the right. Easily solved, put a 2 in front of the O2, making it 4 and finishing the balancing act. CH4 + 2 O2 ---> CO2 + 2 H2O Ignore Blike's post. He means well, but you just cant juggle double whiskies and chemistry, unless you're a whisky chemist. which Blike isnt.
  8. No more elipses? Finally, posts that make sense and actually have a point!
  9. The damage has already been done in this disasterous situation. Palestinians will still be treated like scum within Israel, be denied basic human rights and have there homes bulldozed. The coalition can piss away as much time and money in Iraq as it likes - this is the conflict that needs resolved and until it is, arabs will continue to feel persecuted and trodden on by Europeans, jews and Americans in whatever order.

    Help

Please dont post stuff twice, makes the main board look cluttered. Someone should give you a hand sooner or later - that sounds like mechanics so Ill stear clear of this one!
  11. 3 Chemistry courses - Organic, modern materials and a course called life in the cosmos. Might drop one and take a divinity course tho.
  12. We do need numbers. This isnt my opinion. Does '...oh well...' at the end of a post indicate your dreaming up more vague, non-descript unexplained pap? Its just that I spot a pattern.
  13. You mean a periodic table? Not that hard to come by surely!
  14. Im just laughing from the sidelines. As a British PM once said, 'it'll all be over by Christmas...'
  15. Molecular weight of [Ni(dmg)2] = 232.77 Concentration = 0.0273 moles per litre.
  16. Lol, for 'you're all so anorexic' read 'you're not massively obese and hilariously fat like us! hahahah! you can see your toes!!! losers!'
  17. Numbers aren't 'irrelevant' - there's a difference between having an opinion and just being flat out wrong. Chemitry, physics, biology and just about everything else have either some basis in the numerical system or a total one. You've yet to explain any claim you've made and just seem confused.
  18. The Matrix is not an 'important reference movie that will reshape our future', its a pretty average trilogy that got steadily worse with evch film. The first was truly remarkable and should be rememebred, the less said about the other two the better. The biblical theme was at first clever but in the end proved cumbersome and very predictable. the 100 smiths fight in reloaded was for me very disappointing; go ask Tarantino about Kill Bill for excellent fight scenes en masse.
  19. Science of mind is what brings that which cannot be named, because structure hinders the studier from comprehending the mind in it's true state, as opposed to a bag of satsumas.5 kilos and assorted nuts and bolts which only hinders Anna Kournikova from showing her true fiendish, but perfectly shaped flask containing Ethyl Alcohol. Therefore, the only reason Weetabix lacks a certain resonance is because MUTANT TUNA FISH have taken over ScienceForums the natural mating habits of the admins

  21. The amount of heat produced is large and the reactions occur very quickly, emaning a large amount of energy is released in ashort time. In the case of Cs, its denser than water so will sink which is why you lab demonstrator usually wont show you the Cs in water reaction; it has a habbit of blowing beakers into pieces.
  22. Sorry what? What on God's green earth does that have to do with the electric caused by electrical signals in the brain? Try talking in sentences, its easier to understand.
  23. I feel safer but only because of the DISCUSSION that has taken place in Ulster in the past few years. rather than wandering into Dublin and randomly blowing up schools, debate and talking seem to have caused a major climb down in paramilitary operations. the two sides still hate each other but at least they aint killing each other as often. As for 'war on terror' no it hasnt made me safer. if someone wanted to commit mass murder there are still many ways to do it. Since the Afghanistan war, heroin has soared in value and is still being imported in the same quantities. the whole of the middle east is now virtually a no-go zone for westerners because they hate us so much. North korea now wants to nuke us because that playdo US president lumped them in the same pot as all the other 'axis of evil' nations. So no. not safe at all.
  24. In my labs we sign a thing that says we are obligated to wear glasses all the time, and generally adhere to the safety guidelines in the course book. if we are injured by not following these guidelines (or while not wearing safety glasses) the university couldnt care less and has kicked people off the course before for getting themselves seriously injured through their own negligence. The way it should in my opinion; if your stupid enough to spill nasty corrosives on your hands without wearing gloves why should the university pay you compensation when it strictly warned you about the dangers?
  25. As Iglak said, depending on the colour certain things would die. the social effects would be hatred of whoever put it there and a worldwide crusade against them in order to remove it. or maybe thats just my own violent imagination
